In today鈥檚 world, supply chains are stressed to the limits and many have been forced to hire unskilled labour to ensure the movement of goods from one country to another. This helps to keep products on the store shelves and makes it easier for businesses to get products to the consumer with fewer delays.

Companies importing plants and plant products from the EU to the UK face many of the same import regulations as companies importing other products such as clothing, materials, and more. There are, however, some obvious differences as plants and plant products require specialised certifications and physical checks that could cause increased border delays. We are going to take a look at what items are considered plants and plant products and the steps you must take to import these items into the UK successfully.

For many import and export businesses, understanding every aspect of the shipping and customs processes can be challenging, if not impossible. Still, to be successful in today鈥檚 modern shipping world, regulations must be both understood and followed and businesses must remain compliant and familiar with all customs regulations in every country their goods will pass through. This is where a customs broker or customs clearance specialist can help. By making understanding the customs regulations and processes easier, business owners can focus on other aspects of their business operations without fear of their goods being delayed or denied at a port of entry.

One of the stipulations laid out in the Brexit referendum was that a grace period be provided for those shipping products of animal origin (POAO) outside the UK. In the past, these products were easily shipped between the UK and other EU countries with very few required when it related to health checks and the prohibition of certain products. This grace period, however, comes to an end on 30th September, and all permissible POAO imports into the EU will then require health checks and port health certification from 1 January 2022.

The EU/UK deal covers how a preferential rate of duty on goods can be claimed as well as how goods that are imported into Britain can be declared on an import clearance declaration. As of the 1st January 2021, if the goods that you are importing originate in either the UK or the EU, claiming preferential rates of duty may be possible if you are importing the goods into one of the respective countries and releasing them into free circulation. As a result, those goods will be free of any Customs Duty. In order to benefit from this, though, you need to be aware of the practicalities of claiming, so read on to learn all you need to know.
