Nitinol Super Alloys: Nickel and Titanium Combination
Nickel is one such metal which is considered to be versatile super alloy. It can be easily combined with many other metals like aluminium, steel, chromium, and titanium alloy. The super alloys means they have extraordinary resistance to temperature and corrosion. These alloys are widely used in petrochemical, power, energy, chemical, and many extremely corrosive conditions. These wonderful discoveries have revolutionized and made work very easy in numerous industries from construction to aerospace to medical.
Nickel alloys are carefully combined with additives like titanium, aluminium, chromium, cobalt, etc. Many combination of alloys have given flexible and strong metals which cannot be replaced by any other metals.
The combination of nickel alloy and titanium is well-known as Nitinol. The Nitinol alloy is very useful and well known. It is very generously used in medical field and medical applications. The titanium has high reactivity issue, therefore, the production is little difficult. There are two types of methods used to prepare the alloy.
The first method is vacuum arc remelting. The electrical arc is introduced between raw materials to be combined and copper plate which is cooled in water. This copper plate, cooled in water, is used as a source to melt the components to avoid the carbon entrance in the combination in high pressure.
In second process the carbon is entered into the components, where the components are heated with carbon using magnetic fields. Both the methods are proved to be effective and they do not surpass each other.
The combination of nickel alloy and titanium alloy, Nitinol, is written as NiTi. This combination was discovered by Frederick Wang and William J. Buehler in 1962. The unique property of this combination is its elasticity and capacity to return to its original form. This peculiarity is known as "to remember" the shape and retain it. Aluminum In Automotive Industry

Hardness:
277 to 363 HB (AMS)
The surprising thing about this metal is that it strengthens as it ages, hence well known as age harden-ability. With appropriate heating treatment, followed by holding time, suitable age strengthening can be achieved.
