Fic Snippet: Corona
Ship: Tav/Astarion
Summary: My take on the first post-romance scene in Act 1. This Tav comes from the longfic "The Spider and the Lamb", and this excerpt is from Chapter 25, "Recce".
Word Count: ~600
Tav woke with the birds the next morning, and blinked up into the dappled sunlight that sifted down through the trees. Despite the rocky start, the night before had been…well. Damn. They tried to think of better words for it, but some bastard had gone and stolen all the poetic language, and trying any out now would mean hearing it in his voice.
Said bastard had also turned out to not be all talk after all. And, well, damn.
Surprisingly little talk, actually, once the deed was done. After one last kiss, he'd pulled away wordlessly. The look on his face then had been so strange: sort of emptied out, like he'd given all he had to give in the effort to please them, and needed a moment to turn back into himself.
Now he stood facing away from them, face upturned, basking in the sunlight. They wondered what it felt like to him, after so many years of night. Then their eyes drifted downwards, and met a curious sight.
In the morning light, Tav got their first good look at what they'd only felt in the dark. Etched into his skin was a bizarre pattern of lines and symbols, arranged in concentric circles radiating out from the centre like a sun. It didn’t seem like an abstract art piece, though. Tav was almost certain it was some sort of script.
He must have felt their stare. “It’s a poem.”
Tav frowned. They didn't write much poetry themself, but they were under the impression that most people used quill and parchment, not knife and skin. So it was like a tattoo with no ink? Or ritual scarring?
Astarion continued, “Cazador composed and carved it over the course of one night.” He turned his head, the straight line of his nose just showing over his shoulder. “He made a lot of revisions as he went.”
Tav pursed their lips, fighting the sudden turn in their stomach. They could scarcely imagine what that must have felt like, receiving all of that in one sitting. Why would someone want to do that? Why would anyone agree to it?
…maybe that was how a vampire was made? He’d said before that he didn’t tend to scar, so it made sense that this occurred before turning. Admittedly, they were the furthest thing from an expert on this. They’d thought biting the only requirement, but if that had been the case, they’d have achieved expert status themself just from personal experience.
They studied the marks again. Something about them was stirring a memory…
Leaning over Kresha’s shoulder, instructing her on how to keep the books in the event that Tav needed to take an extended leave of absence. (Which they were doing now. See, it didn't hurt to be prepared.) Tav had thought she was scribbling nonsense so they would go away, but looking at these scars now, Tav realised what they’d been looking at: “Is he a tiefling?” they asked.
“Who?”
“Cazador.” ‘Lord’ Cazador? ‘Mister’? He'd called him a ‘vampire lord’, but for all they knew, that was another type of vampire, not actual nobility. Whatever his title, the name was unfamiliar.
“What? No, he's an elf. Or at least, he used to be.”
‘Used to be’. So he'd died since? Again, that is.
Astarion turned, giving them a curious look. “Why do you ask?”
Tav shook their head. “Just a guess.” They weren’t going to get into the script now; saying they recognised it might lead him to think they could translate it, and they could not. Best let it lie, for now.
They bundled up the blanket and started the hunt for their clothes. “Shall we head back?”

End notes:
Fun fact: a 'corona' can refer to the circle of light around a star like the sun, but it also describes the 'crown-like' structures found between the petals and the stamens of some flowers, like the narcissus.

Tav' first time Wildshaping at home was rough on everyone. It's hard being a druid in a place where no one knows what that is.

But DID Karlach ever throw Shadowheart over her shoulder and carry her to safety? Questions like these are why we need fanfiction

Anyway I think we should really give BG3 more credit for making one of its major antagonists, the Chosen champion of the god of tyranny, a smug tech bro pushing AI for law enforcement applications and lying about how it's produced and programmed.

Writing tip
When designing a character, remember that what's on the outside isn't everything. A kickass aesthetic can only get you so far; you need to make sure there's something beneath that. Make them interesting on the inside.
Give them situs inversus.
