5. In order to receive the same size blocks and make sure our quilt top making process is smooth, we are asking the following guidelines for this challenge:
OFFICIAL GUIDELINES:
- Print off the pattern at full scale 100%. Kate has a 1” guide at the bottom of her pattern page if you need to ensure correct sizing.
- We are asking each person to make and donate 2 blocks EACH, as they are smaller than the LOVE blocks from our previous challenge and we will need more to make a complete quilt top. You are more than welcomed to make MORE than 2 if you desire, too!
- In order to be qualified to win any of the prizes, you must use strictly the Birch January fabric from your bundle and solids along with this pattern. We ask for strictly solids so that each block looks cohesive together.
TRIM:
-PLEASE trim your block pieces down on the furthest OUTSIDE dashed pattern line for every single piece to line up correctly. Please know that Kate’s block is completed tentatively at 4″ x 6.5″ excluding borders.
ADD BORDERS:
- Once you make the completed block, we would like it to be bigger than the tutorial so we ask you add borders to all sides. Please measure & add the necessary amount of borders to all sides to make it finish at 6.5″ width x 9″ height .
(Side note: I always find it easier to add more inches than necessary to each side for wiggle room to trim down precisely. I don’t mind waste so with my block I added 2″ on all sides and trimmed down from there. )
But do what works best for you to get you to the 6.5″ width x 9″ height :)
Also, There is no color preference on the color of the borders.
- By making your blocks 6.5 x 9, it will help us with accuracy when piecing the top together.
- Pretty please tear out your papers prior to sending your blocks in and when mailing in your blocks, we ask that you don’t fold your blocks if possible :)
6. Make your Tall Tales Block your own! Get creative with stitching or other embellishments; show your personality in your block!
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/c431258f077d3c51a35167deb2c261f8/tumblr_inline_olqvo5gI0c1tmxep7_540.jpg)

Peach’s Neet Feet Donation Update
Hi everyone!
At the beginning of December, we donated 31 quilts to Peach’s Neet Feet.
Peach’s Neet Feet brings joy into the lives of children who have experienced great hardship in the form of chronic illness and disability. Each pair of Peach’s Neet Feet is custom and hand-painted. Every shoe is customized to complement each child’s life, interest, and courageous fight. They are given to children living with disabilities and fighting serious illnesses. These personalized, one of a kind gifts lift the spirits of children and their families. When a child is fighting an illness, the whole family is impacted.
In less than 3 months time, our Heart Builders team made 31 quilts from start to finish to be donated and delivered to kids in need through PNF. It was a very successful last quarter donation of 2016 and was great to deliver right before the holidays!

Block of the Month: Bright Hopes
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/93e6428141969bab4dd80e31bc1a75b6/tumblr_inline_olhlt0EAYy1tmxep7_540.jpg)
The Stash Builder Box Block of the Month for February is Bright Hopes. If you have never sewn a partial block seam before, this is a great block to start with to learn the technique. The construction of this block is fairly simple as long as you sew the pieces together in the right order.
This finished block will be 9” square so that you can use it with your other #BOTMSBB blocks.
All seam allowances are ¼”.
Cutting Instructions
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/da3874d8d259a5e7517e00e1d4f6af78/tumblr_inline_olhlucJqHT1tmxep7_540.jpg)
Fabric A: Cut 1-3 ½” square
Fabric B: Cut 2-6 ½” x 3 ½” rectangles
Fabric C: Cut 2-6 ½” x 3 ½” rectangles
Assembly Instructions
1. Lay out the pieces according to the photo below. You will sew each of the B and C pieces to the Fabric A square in the center. Start with the Fabric B rectangle on top and work clockwise.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/2938f27b5720febae808a869d619c6b3/tumblr_inline_olhlw19lC81tmxep7_540.jpg)
2. Find the middle of one side of the Fabric A square (measure in 1 ¾”) and make a small mark.
3. Place the square on top of the first Fabric B rectangle, as seen in the photo below.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/ea6209307f2babe20c40fc0fffd2acfb/tumblr_inline_olhlxeiChx1tmxep7_540.jpg)
4. Start on the outside edge of the square and sew up to the mark you made before.
5. Now you will start sewing on the other rectangles using full seams. Attach them according to the layout in Step 1.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/e21ff5d2dabdb89bd9e92835a19e1422/tumblr_inline_olhlznkDAc1tmxep7_540.jpg)
6. After the second rectangle is sewn on, press the seam toward the new rectangle.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/a2244b66b76767c9dae6b70ab6c2edbb/tumblr_inline_olhlz2xQe11tmxep7_540.jpg)
7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 for the remaining rectangles. Now you will just have the partial seam left to attach.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/6f6d0d0bdba1cb295409a2ce149a0c2e/tumblr_inline_olhm0jwo7K1tmxep7_540.jpg)
8. Start where you left off with the first partial seam and sew to the edge, completing the seam.
9. Do a final press and trim to 9” square.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/256e280096fdc97649542301ec737bcc/tumblr_inline_olhm1pkTtl1tmxep7_540.jpg)
You’ve now completed the Bright Hopes block. Don’t forget to post photos of your completed block and use #BOTMSBB!

October BOTM: Ribbon Block
The October BOTM is the Ribbon Block. It has a fun pinwheel design that would be perfect for a tailgating quilt (or a Spring picnic quilt if you are more of a procrastinating quilter). It is a great block for beginners since it is made by combining a square and half square triangles.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/d62ebc6e8ba1a288b47f0bdfa031e93d/tumblr_inline_of8xa8yxPy1tmxep7_540.jpg)
Last month, we showed how to make two half square triangle squares at a time, but this month we will use the method for making 8 at a time.
All seam allowances are ¼”. The finished block will be 9” so that it will fit with all of your other Stash Builder Box Blocks of the Month.
Cutting Instructions
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/46dcba84c685066060e262fd7650d6c9/tumblr_inline_of8xceEvpv1tmxep7_540.jpg)
Cut 1- 8 ¼” square from Fabric A. From Fabric B, cut 1-8 ¼” square and 1-3 ½” square.
Assembly Instructions
1. Draw diagonal lines from corner to corner on the wrong side of one of the 8 ¼” squares.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/b29ad4d0797184a5cdbfa95153bc5d71/tumblr_inline_of8xktvGpn1tmxep7_540.jpg)
2. Place the marked block on top of the other 8 ¼” square.
3. Stitch a line ¼” from the line you drew. Do this on both sides of each line.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/6b01ece521291b8f4d62da798b82c691/tumblr_inline_of8xnlUaXD1tmxep7_540.jpg)
4. Place the 8 ¼” squares on a cutting mat and turn it so that the drawn lines form an “X.” Use a ruler to measure from the edge of the squares to the center point (4 ⅛”). Cut along the edge of the ruler.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/b481d53bc80895d7aae6e485e46e8a19/tumblr_inline_of8xozWi2Y1tmxep7_540.jpg)
5. Turn the squares 90 degrees and repeat step 4. You will now have 4 squares that measure 4 ⅛” x 4 ⅛”.

6. Cut along the drawn lines of each square to create 8 half square triangle (HST) squares.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/ced819f52ce6873a6af06b4836b1ec11/tumblr_inline_of8xv4FtMB1tmxep7_540.jpg)

7. Open each HST square and press to the dark side.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/29794e263b9df8e6b94fe6ad117471bd/tumblr_inline_of8xy76oKC1tmxep7_540.jpg)
8. Trim to 3 ½”x 3 ½”.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/d5139c72a2bfffe51e25487700517f0d/tumblr_inline_of8y0hGNqX1tmxep7_540.jpg)
9. Arrange the HST squares and the 3 ½” square you cut earlier according to the photo below.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/49bf8ddbb5aa6576a2fb7114fbf8ad2f/tumblr_inline_of8y2r4jA21tmxep7_540.jpg)
10. Assemble the rows and press. Press the top and bottom rows toward the outside and the middle row to the inside so that the seams will nest.

11. Stitch the rows together. Press the block, and trim to 9”x9”.

Hi there, lovely Ambassadors in waiting!
We had such a hard time picking our top 5 Ambassadors and we are so very thankful for you wanting to be part of our team!
So many of you had hearts to help and get involved, so we came up with a fun block challenge exclusively for YOU (the best part is that it helps fulfill our vision to bless kids.. AND it has some prizes involved)!
Introducing our Ambassador in Waiting Challenge!
Here’s how it works:
1. We made up a AIW (Ambassador in Waiting) Challenge bundle just for you! I emailed a special link to buy a bundle, so check your email!
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/2e9a4c7b01514b69d3e251789bc6780c/tumblr_inline_oeci68t1qp1tmxep7_540.jpg)
For only $7 ($4 bundle, $3 shipping) , you’ll get :
- a whole or combination of a half-yard cut from the collection we chose for October (it’s a new & popular collection!)
- An SBB quilty truth pencil
- An SBB pin
- AND 110 yd spool of Gütermann thread
PLUS a chance to make a block to bless kids in need!
2. Once you buy your bundle and it arrives (your bundle will ship 10/18), your challenge will begin! The challenge will be to make the LOVE block below (all 4 letters put together as one block, NOT finished into a mini) by Kelby Sews :
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/2a7823de4d37f6f1f772558837eb6395/tumblr_inline_oeciaeKiX81tmxep7_400.jpg)

TUTORIAL:
http://www.sewmamasew.com/2012/02/true-love-love-mini-quilt-pattern-tutorial/
Print your pattern off at 50% scale (like she did). I stacked all of my papers together to help draw in the outside lines on the L and side of the V with a ruler before I began.
When you finish each individual letter block, remember to trim along the outside line like she talks about, as we printed at 50%.
When your entire LOVE block is finished, trim down to 10.25″ H x 7.75″ W.
3. Make your Wonky LOVE Block your own! Get creative with stitching or other embellishments! Show your personality in your block- to be qualified to win, use strictly the October fabric from your bundle and solids along with this pattern.
Beyond that, use the pattern and add your personality to it however you wish!
4. Post your LOVE block to Instagram! Be sure to tag & give pattern credit to @kelbysews, tagging us (@stashbuilderbox) AND using both #wonkyloveblock AND #sbbambassadors hashtags by 11/10. You can make one LOVE block or multiple LOVE blocks, the sky is the limit with your entries and you are free to make as many from the fabric you get!
5. Drop your block/blocks in the mail to us by 11/15:
7206 S 900 E, Midvale UT 84047 -- be sure to put your name and IG name somewhere inside your package so we know who it belongs to!
6. All of the LOVE blocks will all be sewn together into finished quilts by our volunteer Heart Builders team. We’ll take some pictures once they’re all complete and the very best part is that YOUR block will be part of a quilt that’s donated to kids in need!
7. It’s a win win! You’ll bless someone, you’ll get a chance to play with the collection from our October box AND get a chance to win prizes!
NOW FOR THE PRIZES!!!
We’ll pick a random winner of a posted LOVE block from our hashtags on Instagram (#wonkyloveblock AND #sbbambassadors) on 11/21 to win their own copy of The Quilt Design Coloring Workbook!
