INFORMATION I WAS NOT PREPARED TO LEARN. MAYBE WE *ARE* ALONE. BECAUSE WE ARE SO *EARLY*. IF THERE IS EVER GALACTIC CIVILIZATION THEY WILL NOT REMEMBER US AT ALL. BECAUSE WE ARE NOTHING. CELLS, JUST BEGINNING TO FORM LIFE. SORRY FOR SCREAMING. BUT ARE YOU LISTENING. ARE YOU THINKING ABOUT IT.

After scrolling through a bajillion pages of the current fad for greige 10 mohairs held together plain sweaters, I have finally found a designer worth buying patterns from! If only they had this scale pattern on a sweater!

You are constantly mocked for having such a weird superpower by all the other heroes. “The power to make anything into perfectly cooked soup”… One day, a massive meteor is barreling towards earth. As all the other heroes are panicking, you wait perfectly calm, at the impact zone, bowl in hand.

I love the random replacements for clichés writers insert in science fiction shows. like when a 21st-century human would say "stop pacing you'll wear a hole in the floor" but in a space show the alien/future human says "you're oscillating like a Betelgeusian night badger" or some shit. like fuck yeah he is. amazing drive-by worldbuilding. I'm gonna spend the next half hour wondering why the Betelgeusian night badger evolved to do that

New Year, New Comic! I will be drawing every now and then short stories of Alrick, one of the Death-Heads, who fulfill peoples’ wishes for a price. While some cases of Death-Heads need permissions and legal reports, every single Death-Head assigns their own fees. It can be anything - nothing is illegal or too much.
But Alrick does things a bit differently, heading to get a cup of hot cocoa when the case is closed.

Literary Greebling
Greebling is this thing from model-making where a flat expanse looks boring and unrealistic, so you add on some little bits and bobs (greebles) to break up the surface and make it seem "more".
I think this is a great concept to port over to writing.
For characters: You've got your backstory, your motivation, your emotional beats, all that stuff, right? Add in some quirks, some contradictions, some small, seemingly irrelevant details that make them feel textured and authentic. They don't drive the plot, they're probably not relevant to the story, they're not necessarily going to come up again, but they break up the surface and make everything feel like it exists at a higher resolution.
A character makes sure not to step on the cracks in the sidewalk, not out of superstition, but because he's just been doing it for a long time and likes being on a streak. A character carries around coins from different countries, fiddling with them while waiting in line. A character always knocks on doors to the tune of "shave and a haircut". Someone hums a song from a movie soundtrack.
For settings: It's pretty common for us to build up a setting in simplified terms, to have everything be a result of one thing or another, huge clashing forces. Real settings aren't like that, or aren't wholly like that. A city can have a unified architecture while also having a couple buildings that come from different traditions. A kingdom can have a tiny semi-autonomous zone inside it. You have, in theory, three branches of government, but in practice, there are edge cases where they're putting on each other's hats, and there are independent agencies which only answer to one of the three branches in a limited way, and you don't need too many of these things to have it feel rich and complex.
For magic systems: There's a beginner magic system where four to six elements are all perfectly set into a lattice, balanced against each other, perfectly mirroring each other. This works for certain applications, but I will submit to you that this is much better with greebles. You can have your lattice and your system of elemental weaknesses, but they need the little differences, the things that break up the flat expanse. Give your water magic a connection to the moon, let your fire magic affect rust, have it all have little knots and whorls and complications when you look closer.
Again, the point isn't that these things are plot relevant, they don't have to be, and maybe it's better if they're not. But the little non-conforming details help sell whatever you're trying to do.

“So let me get this straight. We’re here to rescue a princess.”
“That’s right.”
“At the request of a princess.”
“Right again.”
“And you, who will be leading the expedition, are also a princess.”
“You’re very perceptive.”
“How big is your royal family, again?“
“We don’t have one.”
“But–“
“We overthrew our monarchy centuries ago, but we kept most of the titles around. The rank of ‘princess’ is held by the directors in charge of various civil service branches.“
“Huh. And the princess we’re rescuing today is in charge of…?”
“Public sanitation.”
“The Lord of Death’s Dominion kidnapped your public sanitation director?”
“We think he’s a little confused.”

Hey, random writing tip: Instead of having something be a ridiculously unlikely coincidence, you can make the thing happen due to who this particular character is as a person. Instead of getting stuck on "there's no logical reason to why that would happen", try to bend it into a case of "something like this would never happen to anybody but this specific fucker." Something that makes your reader chuckle and roll their eyes, going "well of course you would."
Why would the timid shy nerd be at a huge sketchy downtown black market bazaar? Well, she's got this beetle colony she's raising that needs a very specific kind of leaf for nest material, and there only place to get it is this one guy at the bazaar that sells that stuff. Why would the most femininely flamboyant guy ever known just happen to have downright encyclopedic knowledge about professional boxing? Well, there was this one time when he was down bad for this guy who was an aspiring professional boxer...
I know it sounds stupidly obvious when written out like this, but when you're up close to your writing, it's hard to see the forest for the trees. Some time ago I finished reading a book, where the whole plot hinges on character A, who is 100% certain that character B is dead, personally getting up and coming down from the top rooms of a castle, to the gates, at 3 am, to come look at some drunk who claims to be this guy who died 17 years ago. Why would A do that, if he's sure that B is dead?
Because he's a Warrior Guy from a culture of Loyalty And Honour, and hearing that someone's got the audacity to go about claiming to be his long-lost brother in battle, there is no other option than to immediately personally go down there to beat the ever-loving shit out of this guy. Who then turns out to actually be character B, after all.

It turns out that, rather than space orcs, humans are more like space cats. We believe ourselves to be the best species in the galaxy when we actually are taken care of by more advanced aliens while doing little more than be adorable and destroy local wildlife when left to our own devices.
