I definitely think Mario represents the ability to overcome and achieve great things, even when you have so little working for you.

He's a small, blue-collar, immigrant human. He's more often than not incredibly underestimated because of what he is. Yet, despite all that and through sheer determination and love, he manages to become this great hero whose name is cemented in legend, even through the cosmos.

Miyamoto himself has always highlighted Mario's humanity as an incredibly important aspect to his character. It's very admirable.

Characters with mostly unique stories are likely different versions/timelines. So while some Sonic’s/Shadows may have experienced each others events, they still can be different.
