This is a completely low-stakes soapbox that I get on like once every six months but please don’t listen to the Influencers tm. Frizzy hair is not “unhealthy.” Tangled or even matted hair is not “unhealthy.” Beauty is not health; hair is dead. You’re not failing to “take care of” your hair if you don’t have perfectly defined curls or perfectly untangled glossy straight hair. None of this is health none of this is wellness it is alllllll beauty. In ten years loose fluffy curls will be in style again and you’ll see people wearing defined curls getting shamed for putting Too Much Product or The Wrong Product in. let annabeth be imperfect. let her be brilliant, but also let her be bossy, too sure of herself, and never willing to admit that she is wrong. let her be emotional and caring but also let her get irrationally angry, and let her get jealous.

let percy have flaws. let him be kind and smart but also let him be impulsive, and irrational. let him be considerate and loyal but let him be rude and closed-off, let him be intimidating in the wrong ways as well.

in terms of their dynamics as well, let percy an annabeth complement each other, let percy also help annabeth as he's done several times. I'm all for percy being devoted to annabeth, but don't characterise her as though she isn't just as devoted to him. that's not giving justice to him nor her. that's why they work, not because percy is some moron who wouldn't survive a day without her.

let our characters be human. don't reduce them to "perfect, smart, and never wrong annabeth" or "silly, idiotic, careless percy" nor their flip sides. they have imperfections. get over it.

Oh look, it seems like there's a Republican-led movement to purge voter rolls in the lead-up to the election! It's almost as if your vote matters and they don't want you to vote! Anyway, I whipped up a quick map (based on this) that shows when the voter registration deadline is in each state. There are a few deadlines coming up in the next week or so.

If you live in a state that regularly purges voter rolls for infrequent voters (the orange ones in the first map), or if you moved recently, it's good to check if you're still registered to vote.

Vote.org makes it super easy to check your registration: https://www.vote.org/am-i-registered-to-vote/

Just put in your address and DOB and they'll tell you whether you're registered. (And they give you a quick link to register online if it turns out that you're not! Only the 9 states in white on my map don't have online registration, and for those they provide instructions on how to do it via mail or in person.)

So yeah, give yourself peace of mind -- do a quick check. :)

a conversation i saw on twitter about statues worth keeping reminded me of what is easily one of my favorites.

this is outside of the university of maryland’s student union building, a bench with a statue of one of UMd’s most universally beloved alumni, jim henson, conversing with kermit. people (usually incoming freshmen) will sit down next to them and have their picture taken. it’s one of the most pure and beautiful things on this earth.
