Can you tell us a bit more about the divorce era Webbonso because I'm very new to this duo and I never knew they had another divorce aside from mark's retirement

Hello! Welcome to Webbonso, they are a truly gorgeous pairing I will always love.

Divorce era was interesting. After Mark retired, once he moved into commentating and punditry, we still got lots of good Webbonso content. We had the handshake at Fernando's last race. We had the shared husbandly towel. We had Mark hunting down Fernando on every grid walk. We had the Wedding Ring Interview. Fernando retired at the end of 2018 (after the handshake which is a top tier Webbonso moment for me) and spent some time racing in other series but it seemed he'd ended his F1 career (temporarily, it turned out) on good terms with Mark.

Then it... stopped.

Mark posted an answer to a question on Insta about whether he and Fernando still hung out - "Not really." (At the same time, someone asked him what he thought of Patrick Dempsey and Mark replied "good bloke but I don't wake up thinking about him," which is just *chefs kiss* as responses go).

Then Fernando announced his return for 2021. With Alpine. The team where Mark's client Oscar Piastri was a young driver, the team where Mark hoped he could place Oscar (if not in 2021, when Oscar was in F2, certainly in 2022). Into the same seat Fernando was coming back to take.

Which was when Mark made a comment about Fernando's return - that he couldn't help wanting to see young talent come through, that he was more excited about the sport finding the next Fernando Alonso. He also said that Fernando wouldn't be as fast as he had been at 25. (Mark also said "I am a super fan of Fernando and he knows that," but tbh it didn't soften the "he's too old" comments very much).

Fernando didn't respond publicly but the Webbonso shippers winced. It was around this time that people noticed Mark had unfollowed Fernando on Instagram.

Fernando came back, Alpine weren't spectacular, no one commented much. Fernando turned 40 and Mark contributed a video message that sounded like it had been recorded under threat.

THEN Piasco happened. Seb retired. Aston Martin (according to Fernando) approached him, and offered a two-year contract instead of the one-year on offer with Alpine. Alpine had a vacant seat, said Oscar would be driving for them, the rest is history. Suddenly Fernando wasn't a key factor in Oscar's career anymore - they'd both ditched Alpine.

Fernando debuted with Aston in 2023 and suddenly the divorce era was OVER. Mark said that Fernando was the driver he was most excited about in 2023, since his testing had been so good. We got on camera hugs. We got paddock chats. We've since gotten arriving and leaving the circuits together with Mark driving Fernando's car.

Which goes to show that we should never give up hope.

what merc is doing to that kid is so fucked up too btw. fast tracked a super license for him (pressure) while he's skipped a feeder series (pressure) and then told him he's filling sir lewis hamilton's shoes (insane amount of pressure) all because toto wants to fulfill his weird kingmaker fantasy that he lost out on with the orange demon a decade ago. there's a damn documentary talking about how great this kid is and his journey to f1 (that no other rookie got) (pressure) on top of that toto's now twerking for the orange demon AGAIN talking about how he wants him on his team but won't say which driver he'd be replacing (PRESSURE) and he lets this drag on for ages. and we're about halfway through the season and this culminates in kimi ending up crying after a bad quali at spa because at the end of the day he's a literal teenager in a sport of experienced legends, under insane amounts of pressure bc everyone hyped him up to be the Next Big Thing and he is. just. a. child. and he has to deal with all this and jesus christ why is everyone acting like all of this was a good idea.
