I started writing songs to the minimal chords I knew as an outlet for my emotions. I had so much anxiety and depression that I channeled into my music and I’m still trying to make sense of it. I can’t wait to tell Mars2Marissa’s story. Thank you to anyone who has ever supported my music and I can’t wait to do more shows and that will be the cumulation of a lot of hard work, but loving the journey. Music is my therapy and my childhood dreams. I remember seeing a memory recently on an old camera from my toddler days, when I would make up songs and dance with a blue blowup guitar I asked for for Christmas. 

Songwriting to me is a form of self expression, but I realize it goes beyond that when it connects with other people, I’m guessing over our shared human experience. It’s a conversation. I don’t know how people are going to interpret songs. I just make what comes from the heart, or I’ll get writer’s block if it’s not. Inspiration comes when it wants. That’s another reason why I want to follow my dream of music because I’ve seen people trying to make hits and it comes from a shallow place. I know what I have to share is authentic. Music saved my life before I even knew I wasn’t playing in time and sining off key. I like the mistakes in art, it makes it real.  

I hear things about how artists often succeed when they limit themselves in some way. I don’t know why I didn’t learn more than a few guitar and piano chords to write songs with… I guess the journaling and poetry that could come out as a melody to a (probably not in tune guitar chord) 3 chords and the truth took priority. I was creating so much and not sharing it, I had low self esteem and I see now that being confident and faking it til you make it can inspire others going through the same self doubt and invite them to be themselves too in a way, telling them it’s okay to be you because here is my heart. We all feel the same things, sadness, anger, love. Music is a special thing that brings people together.  

I do believe that music has an influence over how you feel. What you get from it. I understand the need for cathartic sad songs, and I’ve listened to and have written many, but sharing my music out in public and trying to do it seriously now and not just at an open mic occasionally and posting dozens of songs anonymously on SoundCloud, has made me realize that since music can effect people, I want to say it can get better. 

Hearing my old recordings and the anxiety choking my voice and making me short of breath… I’m glad everything was recorded. I had an outlet for my emotions and I’m thankful. Even if it was a sad song, I was still creating, which gave me passion project after passion project, scribbling song lyrics as I would go though things or make observations in life. I was seeing the world though a writers perspective. At least something tragic could be art. 

Anyways, I’m in a much better place in life and am ready to share my heart and soul with the world through my music. Til next time, @mars2marissa
