Sealing the Deal
Hubert x Constance
Constance wanted a little help with the uncertainty that is her future, and who better to ask than the one magic-user she believes might be better than herself.
Read on AO3: HERE
It was a beautiful day. Just enough wind to keep one cool while enjoying a hot beverage. Edelgard and Hubert spent this time having tea, as a little break from their intense planning. It was a very uneventful day, perfect for relaxing. Or so they thought.
“Your highness!! Hubert!!” Constance cheered from afar, skipping over to their table. Her large umbrella high in the sky, preventing the sun from shining on her. It wasn’t uncommon to see her around holding it. While under the overcast, she folded up her umbrella and set it by her side. “Hello!”
“Hello, Constance. Is there something you need?” Edelgard asked, wondering how she is so energetic all the time.
“Yes, there is! But not by you. I was wondering if I could speak with Hubert for a moment!”
This came as a surprise for both Hubert and Edelgard. Why would Constance need to speak with Hubert and him only? Hubert hoped Edelgard would say they’re busy and he needs to accompany her.
“Sure. I don’t see why not.”
Damn it.
“But Lady Edelgard-” Hubert began before being interrupted.
“I’ll be fine Hubert. We can meet up later. Constance, nice seeing you today. Enjoy your time.” Edelgard said, leaving her seat and the area completely.
Constance made herself comfortable, sitting down across from Hubert and noticing the teapot still had water in it. She smiled, grabbing the pot and began to heat it up from her hands using magic. This captured Hubert’s attention. Resulting in him making a judgemental face. Though, it’s hard to notice the difference from his regular expression.
“You use your magic for everyday life. Why bother? Is it not draining?” He asked, taking into consideration he himself only uses his magic for important things. Like training, protecting Lady Edelgard, missions, things like that.
“Why would I limit the window of opportunities to use my magic to simply only when I am in danger! You get no proper practice from that! I see it as a perfect way to make life more enjoyable while benefiting from it.” She said with a closed eye smile. “And besides! A great sorcerer such as I needs to live up to their title in order to restore House Nuvelle!”
There it is. Constance’s classic ‘Restore House Nuvelle’ line. It’s almost as annoying as Ferdinand repeating his name over and over again. At least to Hubert.
“Will you get to the point already? You asked to speak with me and yet here you are speaking at me.” Hubert said, wanting this to be over.
Constance poured herself a cup, took a sip, and placed it gently on the table. A large smile on her face as she opened her fan and began to laugh. “I want us to be work partners!”
“Absolutely not.” Hubert said immediately. He didn’t need to think about it. Working with anyone other than Edelgard is a big no, and Constance? Also a big no.
“Allow me to explain myself first will you?!” She said, beginning to fan herself. “You’re a big deal in the empire. Although I’m sure you already knew that! All I’m asking is that the two of us work together! I could use your help in restoring House Nuvelle! And I’ll repay you in any way!” She said in a more serious tone. “I need someone who can match my magical abilities! Or perhaps someone better even.”
“No. I serve Lady Edelgard and that is that. Go find someone else to beg.” Hubert said, taking this as an exit ticket. Lifting from his seat and walking away.
Constance watched as he disappeared, a frown on her face as she let out a defeated sigh. “What am I going to do now . . .”
- -
It’s been a few weeks since their last encounter. Constance had been locking herself up in Abyss, hoping some new invention spirals into her mind. There was no luck. She was frustrated by her lack of creativity and failures in spell casting. She came to the conclusion she simply needed a new environment for the time being. Grabbing her umbrella, she made her way towards the surface to see a very special someone.
“Luna!” Constance cheered, finally in view of her pegasus. Rushing over to the stable she began petting the animal, to which Luna purred and nudged into Constance’s palm. Constance proceeded to give Luna a hug, still holding her umbrella in a secure grip. “You’re lucky I care for you so much . . . Otherwise I wouldn’t bother coming to the surface,” Constance said, her tone growing soft.
Constance placed her forehead on Luna’s while letting out a sigh. “Oh, Luna. Why did it have to be this way. . .” her voice cracked, full of despair. The pegasus took note of her change in attitude, budding her head to lift Constance’s chin and make her laugh.
Constance smiled tiredly, going back to petting Luna. “While I hate to admit it, I feel if I am unable to accomplish this, I’m a disappointment.”
She was so caught up in her conversation with the animal, Constance didn’t notice the presence growing closer with each step.
Hubert let out a low chuckle, almost mockingly as he stood a good distance away from the Wolf, arms crossed over his body. “You’re never hard to find. Look for the large umbrella and you’ve found your very own Constance.”
Constance lifted her head to see who was speaking, locking eyes with Hubert. She quickly looked away, letting out a huff full of attitude. “Were you looking for me? Well, I have nothing to say to you.” She was clearly still upset over the last conversation they had.
“Perhaps you don’t. But I do.” He said, taking a few steps closer, stopping right at the brim of where her umbrella ended. Close enough to speak to her properly, but far enough to ensure he doesn’t accidentally hit what’s preventing her from going into a depressive episode. “I find your attitude to restoring your house rather endearing, I’m simply curious as to why you’re so caught up in being the best sorcerer and getting your noble title back.”
“Don’t you see it?” Constance said, turning her body to face Hubert completely. “I’m not working up my magic simply to be the best”, She drops her head to the ground. “It’s what I need to do for my family.”
“Your deceased family,” Hubert commented. “Both parents and a brother, correct? How is that of any importance to you? They’re gone after all.” He wasn’t asking to be rude. He’s just a little stupid sometimes.
“Simply cause!” Constance raised her voice, realizing just how tightly she was holding onto the handle, resulting in her hand going completely white. She lets out a sigh, collecting herself. “After the fall of House Nuvelle, I was furious at the world. If this so-called goddess truly cared about her people then why us? Why my family?! And why must I be the one left standing? Others may see it as a defeat, a sign not to carry on. I want to honour my family for all that they did. Being alive gave me a chance to show the world what the Nuvelle name means.”
Hubert tenses up. He wasn’t expecting a full confession, let alone from Constance. Her ‘high and mighty’ act had been completely dropped from this conversation. Leaving her openly vulnerable. Hubert noticed the little things while she was talking, the disappointment in her voice, her anxiously playing with her umbrella, the fact she couldn’t stand still while speaking.
Her drive and motivation for her family. It reminded Hubert of someone dear to him.
Constance shakes her head, letting out a painful laugh. “I’m aware it’s a ridiculous reason. Doing something for the dead. There’s no gain in doing such. But without this drive I have nothing.”
“‘It’s not ridiculous. I’ll lend my aid.”
She locks eyes with Hubert once more. Completely shocked and unsure if she even heard him correctly. “I beg your pardon?!”
Hubert lets out a sigh himself. “Do not make me repeat myself . . . I’ll lend my aid.”
A smile rises to Constance’s face. It was clear that a simple sentence boosted her mood in a positive way. “Hubert!!” She cheered.
“ Only after we reach Lady Edelgards goal. I’m expecting your magic expertise for the empire, payment for my future services.” He said, keeping her under control. But he did slightly enjoy her being as cheerful as she is now, it brought a small smile to his face as well.
“Thank you . . . truly.” Humble Constance. What a sight to see. While it is weird to her that Hubert’s help would mean so much, she knows with him around her dream isn’t so out of reach.
“Don’t fret over it. I’m simply seeing the plus side in having you involved. And besides, you need the best competition to train with.” Hubert said, his smile turning into a smirk as he remembers her praising him.
“Don’t think so highly of yourself.” Her regular over the top dramatic way of speaking returns once more. Bringing the tension between the two to very comfortable. It was surprisingly quiet around them, a beautiful day to have some tea. Or . . .
“Would you care to accompany me in a cup of coffee?” Hubert asked, watching Constance’s eyes widen at the question. He figured it was simply because of how out of character he was acting at the moment.
“How are you aware I like coffee?” She asked, genuinely impressed. The only time she had some to drink was when she got her hands on it and shared it with Hapi. It was absolutely divine, but unfortunately way too expensive for the ex noble to have on a regular.
It was a hard question to answer. It’s not like he could openly say he has spies down in Abyss to keep an eye out. At least, not yet he can. So, he resorted to the next obvious response. “You talk loudly.”
“Excuse you!”

The Side Of Paradise
Linhardt x Bernadetta
Based on the song: The Side Of Paradise by Coyote Theory
"So if you're lonely, no need to show me, If you're lonely come be lonely with me"
Read on AO3: HERE
Ask me why my heart's inside my throat
I've never been in love, I've been alone
Feel like I've been living life asleep
Love so strong it makes me feel so weak
Linhardt isn’t the most affectionate person if you will. It’s not as if he wasn’t exposed to such treatment growing up. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. His parents were very expressive in showing their appreciation to each other. It never bothered Linhardt, he just thought it wasn’t something that needed his attention. Linhardt is blunt, and straight to the point. He’s a realist, having to constantly make sure Caspar didn’t get himself killed while also spending every day reading, collecting notes about crests.
Crests. They have always been fascinating to Linhardt. Capturing his attention the moment he saw his own father doing research. Linhardt first started with the crest easily accessible. His own. The crest of Cethleann. A symbol of kindness and mastery of light. Ironically, Linhardt sees himself as the opposite. Being nice to those who aren’t worthy seems like too much work. And he thinks of himself as a mediocre healer, especially for someone who hates blood.
Living out a proper childhood? He was too busy. He found his passion early on in life. Quickly learning he didn’t need anyone else. And he was fine with it. He liked being alone.
(Are you lonely?) Our fingers dancing when they meet.
It was the Imperial year 1180. The year Linhardt was enrolled in the Officers Academy. At first, it seemed like a bother to him. Having to be around people more often than what he was used to? Not his favourite. But, the pros outweigh the cons. There was a whole library in this monastery, probably full of material Linhardt has never laid his hands on before. Not to mention, being able to research his classmates and their crests in certain scenarios? It was like a dream come true. Sure, the actual reason for going like training seemed important and all, but not really Linhardt’s concern.
Upon arrival, the first thing Linhardt did was dump all his books out. Most of his strength comes from hollering all those heavy books around. Asking for help was too much work. He would rather do things on his own than be in debt to someone else. It might seem selfish but that’s simply how he works.
Finally getting everything in his room. He let out a sigh, plopping himself on the bed. 10 moons. Linhardt will spend 10 moons at this academy, growing his skills, his knowledge, and maybe, even his relationship with others.
You seem so lonely (Are you lonely?)
I'll be the only dream you seek
Byleth, a recruited mercenary. Linhardt will admit, he was slightly disappointed. He wanted Hanneman as a professor. He had to set a reputation. In order to get the freest time to study, Linhardt’s first impression will be rude, uninterested, and sleepy. While being sleepy isn’t entirely a lie. It is true, if it was up to him, he would be spending his days sleeping. But sleeping means taking up time, and he finds time precious. He can’t just let it go to waste.
While pretending to be asleep on the floor, he watched as one of his housemates run out of the classroom. It seemed as if she’s not one to like people either. Although, she deals with it much more chaotically. It grabbed his attention.
Maybe she has a crest.
So if you're lonely, no need to show me, If you're lonely come be lonely with me
Bernadetta von Varley. The eldest daughter of Count Varley’s. Heir to House Varley, responsible for religious aspects within the Empire. And best of all, bearer of the Crest of Indech. She definitely was an interesting character. Always the first in class, and yet the first one out. Clearly very skilled in a bow, a factor of her crest. The only problem was, it was difficult to speak with her.
She was fast. Spent most of her time within her dorm walls. It was difficult to find her outside of her room without the presence of the professor. But Linhardt did notice a few things. Dining hall, greenhouse, library. All these places seemed to be Bernadetta’s favourite spots to be.
She was the only one who Linhardt hasn’t bothered yet. She was something else, so he spent his days in these areas for the small chance of being able to catch her and talk. He has had lunch with her before. But he saw how anxious she looked. Sitting on the edge of her chair practically waiting for the moment she can escape. So, Linhardt doesn’t mention anything. He can wait until she’s comfortable.
Lonely (Are you lonely?)
Passion is crashing as we speak
She paints. Linhardt learned this.
He wanted a change of scenery. Reading in his room just wasn’t doing it for him. So he went out and searched for a quiet place to read. It just so happened, he found Bernadetta in the same place. She began screaming and freaking out, stating how if she’s in his way, she can leave. A sense of guilt built up in Linhardt. Simply saying she is not a bother and can stay.
You would think Linhardt would use this opportunity to ask her a few questions. But he came to read. And besides, she looked peaceful. The two continued keeping themselves entertained. No words were exchanged for a bit.
Unfortunately, Linhardt has no filter. Showing Bernadetta a sense of admiration. Something she definitely didn’t want.
You seem so lonely (Are you lonely?)
You're the ground my feet won't reach
Once again, the two were together. It seemed to become a common thing for the two. If he was being honest, Linhardt completely forgot his objective. It seemed to spend time with Bernadetta, even with the silence, which was much more fascinating than her crest. She was fascinating. And Linhardt found himself wanting to learn more.
His approach to this was being honest. Usually, he keeps his mouth shut. But he wants to help and show Bernadetta he is willing to be blunt with her. Most people see her as weak, but he sees something else.
What he did not see happening, was her panicking the moment he spoke up about how using crimson, her original approach would have made the painting better. Linhardt saw it as a compliment. He made an error, something that would have been avoided if Bernadetta stayed true to her artistic view.
The fact she saw it as an insult, going on and on about how she must break her brushes, burn the art and never paint again. Linhardt was shocked, to say the least, perhaps, being honest isn’t the best approach. He felt saddened watching her run away.
So if you're lonely, Darling you're glowing If you're lonely come be lonely with me
The year is now 1185. The war had been going on for five years now. The whole process seemed so bizarre to Linhardt. He’s not a fighter. His fear of blood proves as a weakness on the battlefield. With the professor back after their disappearance during the attack on Garreg Mach, he has been feeling better. With Byleth’s help, he knows they will help lead Edelgard and the other Black Eagles to victory.
Life seemed so sacred now. Linhardt didn’t know if he would live to see another moon. The idea of it terrified him so. Would he really fall on the battlefield? All his research for years just, gone to waste? He couldn’t let that happen. He had something to live for. Something to keep growing stronger for. Or, more like, someone.
Looking back on his Academy self, Linhardt realized something. In class, during training and on missions, in the dining hall, before he slept and while doing research. His mind was thinking of Bernadetta.
How could he have been so stupid? Granted, Linhardt never would have wanted to imagine himself in a relationship. From his perspective, it seemed only crests were important. But lately, he’s been finding himself wanting to do better. Wanting something more.
Wanting her love.
Underneath the pale moonlight
Dreaming of a circus life
Carousels and Ferris heights
I'll be yours if you'll be mine
There was no way he was just going to say it. They’re in the middle of a war dammit. No one is sure of their fate. Linhardt decided to enjoy every moment he got instead. And luckily, he got many moments. Going out into the field. He was thrilled to find Bernadetta there painting. It reminded him how rude he was in the past, and happy to see she didn’t let his words go to her head.
It was beautiful.
Linhardt was amazed at how much she had improved. The art was captivating in every way. It brought warmth to his heart. Making him feel a certain way. It felt like home. And watching Bernadetta accepting the compliment instead of running away, it was a cherishable moment. And Linhardt let his guard down.
(Are you lonely?) Our fingers dancing when they meet.
You seem so lonely (Are you lonely?)
I'll be the only dream you seek
Cute.
Linhardt called Bernadetta cute.
At that moment he wanted to tell her she was cute. Adorable. Pretty. Stunning. Absolutely beautiful. But, that would be too much for her heart. Besides, with the war still not finished, it’s best he doesn’t mention that he’s in love. At least, not yet.
For now, the two can be alone.
Alone together.
So if you're lonely, no need to show me If you're lonely, come be lonely with me
They won.
Rhea was killed and the war was over.
It felt like a dream come true.
Are you lonely? Passion is crashing as we speak
“Bernadetta,”
You seem so lonely
Linhardt nervously walked up to her. Was this okay? Was all this okay? The idea of having the chance to be happy, was he worth it?
You're the ground my feet won't reach
“Yes, Linhardt?”
So if you're lonely
She was beautiful. She was unafraid. Bernadetta trusted Linhardt. That much was clear. And it made him flustered.
Blush reached his cheek, hiding his hands behind his back. Clearing his throat while attempting to make eye contact. “You . . . mean a lot to me Bernadetta. Ever since our academy days, I’ve wanted nothing more than to be with you. You said yourself, we find comfort with each other's presence. That’s we’re alone . . . together.”
Darling, you're glowing
“Of course I remember, you mean a lot to me too Linhardt.” She says, blushing. The colour on her cheek brought up Linhardt’s confidence.
He can do this.
“So much in fact . . . I’m in love with you,” He stated.
If you're lonely come be lonely with me.
“Will you marry me?”

An Unexpected Friendship
Naga!Hubert x Fairy!Bernadetta
Sometimes, a little fairy needs a big scary naga friend to protect her from all harm.
Read on AO3: HERE
It was a quiet morning. A few birds flying here and there, bugs making their presence known. Bernadetta hums to herself, dragging a leaf behind her as she flies around the forest. The small fairy had been traveling for most of the day, Making a promise of helping a rabbit collect food, so she was searching for berries or any edible plants. "Cranberries . . . Wild berries . . ." Bernadetta said to no one, resting herself on the forest floor, looking around. For someone her size, it was difficult to flutter around so much, her wings beginning to ache.
Not far away from where the small creature was, a naga was having a peaceful rest. Hubert lay curled up in the bushes. His tail bobbed up and down from time to time as he dreamed. He soon started snoring, flicking his tongue in his sleep. Hubert was completely unbothered, a normal day for him. Little did he know it had only begun, and there was much more in store.
"Oh! Berries!" Bernadetta dropped her little leaf basket, flying over to the bush. Beginning to fill her small hands with the fruits, finding what seemed to be a rock to rest on, as she plucked off more. Only, this wasn’t a rock at all. ‘Something is here...’ The naga thought, eyes still shut tight. Hubert can feel something touching his scaly form. He starts to stir from his slumber, slowly adjusting to the morning sun's beams.
"AHHHHH." Bernadetta screamed, feeling the ‘rock’ underneath her moving. Dropping the berries from her grip. Trying to keep her balance avoiding any further damage. Hubert heard the tiny yelp as he woke up, and his senses amplified. His eye slits shot open as he rose from the bushes, taking an obscene amount of leaves up with him. Panicked filled the fairy, realizing just what she was on.
"AHHH PLEASE DON'T KILL MEEEEEEEE!!!" Bernadetta screamed as loud as she could, rushing towards the leaf, hiding under it while shaking immensely. She had never encountered such a large, terrifying monster. Hubert scanned the forest floor. The corner of his lips curled into a smile. ‘There is something under that leaf. Perhaps a mouse? Hmmm.’ Hubert pondered. He leaned his upper body towards the ground and moved to pluck the leaf off the ground. At the last minute, he motioned against that. And instead opened his gangly hand all the way, scooping up both the leaf, and anything else that was hiding underneath it.
"WAIT WAIT WAIT PLEASE STOP!!!!" Bernadetta was not prepared for this, kicking around her legs and waving around her arms, trying to escape. ‘This is how I die. Goodbye world! Goodbye little bunnies!!’ She thought to herself, preparing for her final moments. "Well now, what do we have here?" Hubert hissed, his grip on the leaf and the creature not budging from the struggling. "Hmmmm..."
Bernadetta let out a whine, deeming her efforts of freedom useless. "I-If you're gonna kill me, just get it over with! I don't want to suffer!!!!" she said, with one final attempt to get out. Hubert flicked his tongue, taking in the air. "You must be a fairy... ah..." he mused, curiosity painted on his face. Bernadetta shakes, nodding her head while her eyes were shut tightly. “Y-Yeah . .” ‘Scary!!!!’ She thought. ‘This is a nightmare! Stupid Bernie! This is why we don’t go out into the forest!!!’
Hubert relaxed his grip, simply letting the small creature rest on his palm. "Well, if it eases your heart, I have no intent on killing you. That would be too easy, you see, heheh..." He said, taking in every detail about Bernadetta. ‘Hmm... but this creature is a little cute…’ Hubert thought. "I'm left to wonder what you were doing out here, all by yourself?" he asked. "You could very well find yourself in the jaws of some ravenous beast" he teased, baring his fangs a little.
Although technically being held under no restraint, Bernadetta stayed in place. Too afraid to move. She flinched, holding back another scream at the look of his fangs. ‘Too easy?! AHH’ Her mind was full of screams. “Uh . . . I was looking for berries. . .” Bernadetta says, hoping he couldn’t pick up on the shakiness in her voice. She wouldn’t want him knowing she’s in a vulnerable state, even if it is obvious.
He should’ve guessed that much, Hubert thinks for a moment. ‘’I suspected as much...” He began again, plucking a berry from the bush. He let his hand get closer to the other, and gently placed the berry beside the fairy. “It is quite rude to intrude on another’s resting spot, wouldn’t you say?” Bernadetta pouts, crossing her arms over her body, lifting her head and looking away angrily. “It’s not like I knew you were there! I thought it was rock!”
“Well, it seems you were wrong. How very unlucky that you chose to gather berries from this bush.” He gestures towards the ground, “and those must be your berries? The ones dropped there?” Her mouth drops. Pushing herself onto her knees, looking down towards the ground at the berries. “Boo . . . They’re all mushy now.” She frowns, feeling sad, lying down on her stomach still staring at the ground. Completely forgetting the fact she rested on Hubert’s palm.
Hubert takes a deep sigh. "Ah well, it's a slow morning for me anyway." he starts as he sets her down on one of the bush leaves. Making sure she was secure and wouldn’t fall. Bernadetta yelps at the sudden movement. Her body was slightly sore considering the fact she’s so small. Hubert’s grip from before was far too strong. Bernadetta lifts her arms, stretching, hoping that will loosen the tension in her muscles. “Slow morning? What could someone like you possibly do all day?”
"Usually... I am waiting." He started, "Waiting for a visitor. A nice, tasty looking visitor. Perhaps just a small morsel, even..." he says as his tongue flicks again, his head approaching the fairy. “AHH PLEASE DON'T KILL ME!” She screams. Trying to run out of fear, only to let out a whine, flinching from the pain coming from her back. Bernadetta looks behind her and notices a small tear in her wing. “Oh no oh no no you’ve done it now Bernie. Stupid stupid!”
He allowed the fairy back onto his hands. Hubert, for the first time since this whole fiasco started, feels something strange flowing in his heart. Perhaps it was his instincts acting up, but either way, it was an icky throbbing in himself. "It is torn alright..." he gently traces a finger by the wing, careful not to touch it any further. Bernadetta winced at the feeling of something against her wings. She had never gotten used to it. They were relatively sensitive after all. “Now what am I going to do. . .”
"Perhaps I treated you too harshly. I am truly sorry for what has happened to your wing." Hubert's eyes seemed softer than ever before. ‘What is this, painful feeling in my heart?’ It was something the naga had never experienced before. “I don’t think it’s your fault. . . I have a tendency of not looking where I’m going. Maybe it got caught on something earlier.” She says, trying to comfort him. Bernadetta didn’t want him to feel responsible.
But alas, Hubert did not buy it, but he won't humor that much longer. "I see... will it grow back? It surely must not be permanent, I hope?"
“Yeah. It will heal. I’ll have to stay on the ground for a bit though. Maybe wrap it up from any further damage.” In all honesty, she has never tore her wing before. She doesn’t leave the village let alone her little house. A small crease showed its way onto Hubert's expression "How far away is your home, exactly?"
Bernadetta thought for a moment, proceeding to sit criss cross. “It’s like, half a day's travel maybe? I got distracted while on my trip.” She lets out a small giggle. Amused at the fact. "No, I don't want you to travel right now..." Hubert replied. "You need time to heal it up. The journey on foot is long, arduous and dangerous."
“True. . . But still the vil-“ Bernadetta stopped. The village doesn’t even know she existed. They wouldn’t mind her not being there for a bit, right? “But uh . . . Where would I go?”
"Well, with all the things out there that would stop at nothing to have a taste of a creature like you..." Hubert paused to take a heavy breath, "Who knows what would happen out there all by yourself. Please, allow me to watch over you for the next few days. I cannot stand the idea of you all on your own, not with how... vulnerable you are at the moment."
Bernadetta felt funny. She nods softly, unable to make eye contact. Feeling too shy. And ironically, small. “Yeah you have a point . . . I guess staying with you can’t be so bad!” As long as he doesn’t try to kill me. She thought.
He spoke softly, hoping to ease her anxiety. "I hope you feel safe in the coming days. I won't let anything hurt you." Bernadetta laughed awkwardly. “T-Thanks. . . Uh, wait. What is your name? My name is Bernadetta!” She says, giving him a small wave. Hubert froze.
‘Fuck. She's so cute.’ He was a little overwhelmed by such a cheerful spirit, but did well to hide it. "I am Hubert. And as you can see, I am... quite the vicious predator." he stared blankly, away from her gaze.
Bernie shakes her head. “You are a little scary. But after talking to you, you’re not that bad! Maybe a flower would help you look less spooky!” Hubert is very glad she seems less afraid of him now. "Perhaps. I am glad things have settled down for now. Just get some rest now. Your wings will thank you." He reaches with a single digit and softly pats her head.
Bernie giggles softly as her head gets patted. Fixing her hair in the process. “Where do snakes live though? I don’t think you have a small enough bed for little Bernie here.”
"You're right. I have to accommodate somehow. Hmmm" Hubert pondered his choices carefully. "Usually I just rest wherever I tire.”
“That seems kinda lonely. . . No real place to call home. . .” Bernadetta said, her voice full of concern and sadness. She didn’t exactly like the idea of a lonely Hubert. "It does sound lonely, but it is not so bad." He half-heartedly searches for a place they can both rest. "I'm used to it by now."
She pouts, patting her small hands on the spot she rested on, trying to be comforting. “No one should have to get used to that . . . It makes me sad.” Hubert proceeded to chuckle a little, "Well, when you're as intimidating me, and you've killed plenty of living things, it was an inevitable lifestyle..."
Bernadetta smiles at the sound of Huberts chuckle. It made her feel happy. “Well, maybe I can be your friend!” ‘Hmmm... tiny friend . . .’ He thinks about it. "I suppose you could be a ‘friend’ to me. Well, more of a friend than anyone I've run into in the past few weeks."
“Uh. . . Yeah. . . Just, please don’t eat me. I can’t explain it, but I trust you Hubert.” Bernie says shyly. Playing with the hem of her skirt. "Yes, of course. Thank you for putting your trust into me." He says. "Perhaps, maybe... we could hide out in a tree somewhere?"
"Trees huh . . . Sure! I've never flown that high before, but it can't be that scary! It's a big mushroom!" She giggles, covering her smile. "I suppose you're right...." Hubert muses. "I haven't really slept in one before, but. I hear it can be quite comfortable.."
"W-Wait! Why can't we just rest in a usual spot of yours, l-like the ground!" In all honesty, she didn't like the fact she was the cause of something new for him. Bernie wants her new friend to be comfy. Hubert's stare is intense, yet caring. "It is much safer in the trees at night. I don't want any prying animals to snatch you up. Ever." He starts stroking her head again. "As long as you are safe, then I don't care where we may rest."
Bernie felt the blood rushing towards her face. The odd comfort in Hubert's words put any worries she had at ease. Not to mention the amount of joy she is feeling with the head pats. "I-If it's okay with you. . ." She says softly, resisting every urge to melt into his touch. "Lovely. Hold tight then." Hubert gives Bernie a few seconds to prepare, before he's slithering his body to a nearby tree.
Bernadetta lets out a small yelp, grabbing onto him tightly, eyes shut, afraid to open them. Her small body pressing against him to the best of her ability to avoid any dangerous falls. Hubert made himself comfortable, his whole form resting on the tree's many branches like a scarf tangled about. He rests his head on a branch and lets the fairy sit by the nearby branch. "No creature would bother approaching me, so it would be best for you to stay close. Make yourself comfy, otherwise..." He spoke.
Bernie nods, grabbing a leaf from nearby and begins folding, and folding, and folding. After many folds, she had a small little bed! She pushes it closer to Hubert, and rests on it. "Thank you again Hubert . . . You probably saved me from dying today hehe!" ‘Even though you could have killed me.’
"I would not dare to imagine how it would have gone had you found yourself flightless without anyone to help."Hubert mutters. "You are a very lucky little fairy, aren't you?" He said, sleepy and obviously ready for bed. He shivered a bit, but seemed at ease that Bernie was safe. He let his thumb stroke her hair softly, enjoying the smooth feeling.
Bernadetta hummed, this time allowing herself to melt and get comfortable under his touch. She herself was also getting tired, deciding it was time to rest. After all, there was a new day waiting for her and her new friend. "Good night . . . Hu . . bert." Hubert touched his fingers to his lips, then gently bapped them on her head. "Goodnight to you as well... Bernadetta." He said. It was warm, the softest he's ever been. ‘Cute, cute, cute!!!!!‘

Sleeping Stars
Hubert x Bernadetta
All Hubert wanted to do was go home, and see his wife. But of course, it seemed too much to ask. But in the end, he got what he wanted.
Read on AO3: HERE
Stupid.
That’s what he was. Stupid.
Did he really think this meeting was going to fly by? As if those obnoxious businessmen were actually going to corporate for once? Clearly his expectations were set too high. He felt frustrated, angered at the thought of his current situation, sitting in this stupid chair, in this stupid clothing with these stupid people.
All he wanted was to go home, eat, and see the person who he owes everything to after a broken promise of returning early.
“Uh- Mister Vestra?”
Hubert brings his attention to the owner of the voice. Completely unaware of the fact he wasn’t even paying attention. It was late, or, early in the morning. One in the morning to be exact. It doesn’t prove to shock him he was slowly falling unconscious. Hubert straightened his back, sitting properly in the chair and clearing his throat. “My apologies . . . What did you say?” His voice was groggy.
“I just talked about finalizing-”
“Oh thank god . . .” Hubert said, accidentally interrupting his coworker. Deciding it’s best not to comment on his words and ignoring them instead. “Put the papers on my desk. You should all be grateful I decided to let this meeting continue an hour past the discussed time. I’m taking a leave tomorrow. No one should contact me unless someone is dying. You’re all dismissed.”
And without a second thought, Hubert left the room.
“ . . . Would it be a bad time to tell him I still need his signature?”
- - -
Hubert never thought of himself living in the city again. While his wife doesn’t particularly like the shining lights, loud cars and rude people, she said it was fine as long as she gets to stay inside their apartment. Which she does.
The night breeze definitely calmed him down as he drove. Hubert preferred the sound of the car engine compared to the annoying music played on the radio. It was nice. But he’s still mad. Those idiots were lucky he was too tired to yell at them or else they would have gotten an ear full.
- - -
Dragging himself through the halls of his apartment, Hubert finally arrived home. Reaching into his pocket he pulled out his keys, inserting them into the lock. As he entered through the door he began to notice the lights still turned on. And what seemed to be the sound of the tv still playing. Pulling his sleeve back, he read the time on his watch. A sour expression reaching his face. “Is she really awake at this hour . . .”
A sudden warmth found itself around Hubert’s ankle, restricting his movement. Dropping his eyes towards the floor, being greeted by a black cat. “Ah . . . Hello, Spooky.” The name was pure irony. It wasn’t his idea but it was the best name out of all the others so that’s what the couple went with. “Where is your mother?” Hubert asked. As if the animal understood him, Spooky began to walk towards the living room while Hubert followed.
Soft snoring was heard coming from the couch. Or the floor in front of the couch. Stuffed animals, pillows and blankets covered the ground in front of the tv. Bowls of popcorn, gummies and a water bottle pushed to the side. Bernadetta was fast asleep, cuddling with her hedgehog plush and Animal Crossing playing in the background. Her head dropped in an uncomfortable position as it failed to keep sturdy.
Hubert lets out a small chuckle. “At least she’s asleep . . . Though I should move her. “ He said to no one. A quiet twinkle sound caught his attention. Looking at the TV and watching as the shooting stars sparkled in the sky. “So that’s why she’s not in bed,” Hubert remembered every conversation he had with Bernadetta about how rare shooting stars were for her.
He has a debate with himself. Letting out a sigh. “I suppose collecting a few more can’t hurt . . .” Hubert sat on the ground beside his wife, lifting her body a bit to let the small girl rest her head on him. Wrapping his left arm around her and bringing her closer, as he began to press the A button on the joy cons.

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star
Hubert x Bernadetta
Two oblivious students fall in love with each other. Traumatized by the thought it was one-sided. One must suffer a disease that is destined to bring the way she sees the world to an end . . . literally.
Read on AO3: HERE
Star Tear Disease.
A result of unrequited love by the person you love.
While the pain of one-sided love fills the victim. Their tears turn into colourful stars that release a twinkling sound. With each star that falls, the victim's eyesight worsens. And with unreturned feelings, they go completely blind. The only cure is love . . . It’s hard to look for a cure when you don’t know what’s wrong.
And not knowing what was wrong, made Bernadetta cry more.
It was late at night. She had just woken up from a nightmare. In the dream, Bernadetta was back at home. Once again under her father's control. It frightened her, resulting in the girl's sudden awakening, eyes full of tears. If you can even call them tears.
Stars. For the past three days any time Bernadetta’s eyes started to water, they were stars. When one dropped, it twinkled like a shooting star in the sky. At first, she thought it was still a dream. No one can cry stars after all. But it wasn’t a dream.
It was a curse.
A cruel, twisted joke from the goddess.
Bernadetta realized whatever was going on, was dangerous. The world she saw every day went from colourful to black and white. And with no colour left, the world was becoming blurry. Her eyesight was being taken away. And soon, it would be gone completely.
She had to custom to her new . . . situation.
Bernadetta walked to class slower. Took longer to write notes. Constantly keeping her eyes on the ground, arms slightly out in case she fell. She stopped painting. Doing embroidery. Her archery practice was becoming sloppy. Of course, none of this went unnoticed.
Hubert keeps tabs on all of the Black Eagles. So noticing these small changes in Bernadetta’s daily life wasn’t a shocker. But that didn’t stop him from being curious about what was happening. His classmate was reacting less to the odd stares she receives from other students. Almost as if she couldn’t tell.
As much as it shouldn’t have, it bothered him. Hubert wanted to know, and he won’t stop until he does.
---
“Bernadetta.”
She flinched. Accidentally letting go of the arrow. Hubert watches as it flies past the target, way off course. Bernadetta lets out a sigh, staying her spot as she drops her head staring at the floor. While she would normally turn her body to face the person she was speaking to, how could she? If he’s too far away she won’t know where he is.
“Uh . . . Hi. Was there something you needed?”
She’s not running. Nor is she trembling under his glare. Bernadetta’s calmness and lack of reaction frightened Hubert more than anything else could. ‘What has happened to you . . .’ He thought, shaking his head. Hubert had a mission. He couldn’t let these odd emotions he’s been experiencing get in the way. He takes a deep breath, crossing his arms over his chest.
“After that missed shot, It’s safe to assume something is on your mind. It’s been on your mind for a while. I’ve noticed your declining aim in bow, the lack of activity in your regular hobbies, you no longer face those speaking to you and are constantly burning holes into the ground with your eyes as if you’re looking out for something. This type of behaviour is odd coming from you. Is something the matter?”
Bernadetta began to shake. Confrontation was never something she was good at dealing with. Her habit of self-loathing wasn’t doing her any favours either. The thoughts in her head are loud. ‘You’re a burden. You can’t do anything right. You’ve dragged others into your problems. You’re stupid, unlovable, unmarriageable stupid Bernie-’
“Bernadetta answer me.” Huberts voice was stern, yet full of concern. As much as he could never admit it. She was worrying him. The idea of something so effective happening it’s changing her life completely made him feel uneasy. Hubert wanted to help. But he can’t do much with the information he had. He was brought back to reality when the sound of twinkling echoed the empty training area.
Hubert’s eyes widened, watching as purple, blue, green stars fell from Bernadetta’s eyes. While she was doing everything in her power to keep quiet, holding back the cries, the stars betrayed her making it loud and clear she was crying. “Bernadetta?”
“I don’t know . . .” She says in between cries. Trying to keep a steady breath. “I don’t know what's wrong. And I’m scared . . .” Unable to hold back her scream, Bernadetta falls to her knees, gripping the hem of her skirt tightly. “There’s no more colour! And it’s hard to see! Hubert, I’m going blind and I don’t know why!” She lifts a hand to wipe away the stars from her face. “I'm so scared! Please make it stop!”
Hubert takes a step back. He’s shocked. Confused. And his heart ached. But why was it aching? Was it the fact he’s watching as Bernadetta cries, pleading for help? While he has absolutely no idea what to do? His hands were shaking. There’s nothing he can do. And the thought of being helpless broke him.
“ . . . I don’t know how.”
---
It was late. And the amount of coffee Hubert had consumed should have killed him. After the interaction he had with Bernadetta, he refused to give up. Searching every single book in the library to find an answer. But with Seteth’s strict acceptance of what books are put in the library, it was hard to find even a spell the church hasn’t approved of.
Which is why he turned to Abyss.
Despite the idea of Abyss being a rumour, he took all chances and somehow ended up in their library. Still finding nothing. Hubert isn’t someone who holds onto hope. He’s a realist. But when he closes his eyes he can hear the twinkling stars, the sound of Bernadetta’s cries for help. Taking another gulp of the caffeinated beverage, refusing to let sleep consume him.
“Come on . . . I’m trying here! Please, give me the answer . . .” Who Hubert was talking to was unknown even to himself. Just someone who will listen to his pleas and grant him what he wants. Grabbing the final book, he began scanning it.
Until he found it. ---
“I found it.”
Bernadetta didn’t bother lifting her head. By now she learned how to identify people by voices. She held a blank expression staring into space as she drew lines back and forth on her paper. “Oh, hi Hubert.” Her cheerful voice was no longer there. Hubert pulls out the book he found last night, grabbing Bernadetta’s hand and placing it in her possession. “Star tears. They make the victim go blind over time. The only way to cure it is for the feelings to be returned.”
“Feelings to be returned?”
“The star tears only appear in the situation of unrequited love by the person you love.” The sentence was so hard to get out. While Hubert did his all to find the answer, this wasn’t exactly the one he wanted. Bernadetta was in love with someone. And it made him feel . . . conflicted. “Bernadetta please,” He says softly, trying to get the words out. “You must tell this person about your feelings before it’s too late. I wish you luck . . .” And with that, he left her alone with the book.
This made it no better for Bernadetta. She was in love? But with who?! Thoughts of the past months here at the academy flood her mind. Who could it be who could it be who could it be who-
Who is constantly checking up on her? Making sure she’s comfortable with a situation to ensure her best results? Someone who she can trust her life with despite her fear of people? The one person who was kind enough that she gave her heart to . . .
“I’M IN LOVE WITH HUBERT?!”
---
Finding Hubert was hard enough, to begin with. She had to wait until she was sure he was in his dorm. That’s the one place Bernadetta can guarantee his presence in. So she waited. Standing in front of the door, completely ignoring the hour it was and the fact she was fighting sleep.
“Bernadetta? It’s late what are you-”
“Hubert, I have something to tell you . . .” Her voice was shaky. If she cried once more she would be completely blind. There was nothing left for her except this.
“Something to tell me?” Hubert said, his full attention on her now. Why was she here? “Did you tell the person about your love? Has your eyesight returned?!” While he was happy at her going back to normal, that also meant the other person loved her back. Completely taking her away from him.
Yeah, Hubert had finally realized why it hurt so much. He was in love with Bernadetta and could never take action on his feelings.
She shakes her head. “No, I-”
“No?! Did that complete fool not understand the situation you are in?! How could they not return your feelings?! Bernadetta, do tell their name I shall discuss-”
“Hubert it’s you! I’m in love with you dammit!” Bernadetta screamed. Not caring who heard at this point. ‘Please . . . Hubert, save me . . .’
He froze. Did he hear her correctly? Bernadetta von Varley . . was in love with him?
The twinkles.
Hubert snaps out of it at the sound of them. He had to do something and fast. Without a second thought, Hubert grabs a hold of Bernadetta. A hand gently placed around her waist and the other cupped her chin, bringing her lips to connect with his. The two continued to kiss, both leaning into it more.
After some time, Hubert pulled back to let them breathe. To his own surprise, a small tear had escaped from his eye. Bernadetta blushed, staring at Hubert, and suddenly gasped.
“I missed that shade of green . . .”

A Warm Welcome
Hubert x Bernadetta
After winning the war, they finally had the opportunity to settle down. And the chance to start a family. Today is the day. Hubert and Bernadetta meet their newborn baby.
Read on AO3: HERE
Why was this so hard? Why out of all things, this brought Hubert stress. Fighting many battles, killing many people, being the best retainer for His Majesty. And yet, at this very moment, he was scared. It made him restless. Hubert paces back and forth, constantly pushing back his hair, tugging on the edge of his sleeve, doing anything to calm his nerves and distract his mind. But he couldn’t, how could he? At this very moment, a child was coming to greet the world. His child. Something he thought was unreachable, Hubert used to think there was no happy ending for him in this lifetime. And yet, he got the woman he loved. And now, there’s a person who is part of him. The thought just made his heart clench. Afraid one day, he’s going to wake up. Wake up from this beautiful dream he’s living.
While he was afraid of this joy only being temporary. The fear of being a horrible father was much worse. Marquis Vestra. Hubert’s own father. The mere thought of him brought Hubert anger. Hubert could never forgive his father. He was a horrible man and an even worse father. Hubert doesn’t want that. While no one truly knows what Marquis Vestra was like, Hubert doesn’t want to be like him. When he found out Bernadetta was pregnant, he did a lot of contemplating and self-doubting. What if he messes up? What if the child grows to hate him? It doesn’t help with Bernadetta’s own issues.
Bernie’s mother wasn’t around much, always away at work in Enbarr leaving Count Varley to take care of her. The night she found out she was expecting, Bernie cried. Was she ready to be a mother? Was this what Hubert wanted?
It was a stressful day, but they both made promises. A promise to learn together, grow together. They may have some ups and downs and hardships, but as long as they have each other, it won’t be so bad.
Some time had passed, and Hubert had no idea. His mind wandered, only to be brought back to reality at the sound of a door opening and heels making contact with the floor tiles. He lifts his head to make eye contact with Dorothea, who let out a sigh while taking her hair out of the ponytail.
“Well?” Hubert said, his voice shaking. He could only think the worse has happened. As if Dorothea could read his mind, she places a hand softly on his shoulder and smiles. “It went well. You have nothing to worry about. Bernie did great. And,” She pauses, her smile growing bigger. “Your daughter is finally here.”
“D-Daughter?”. This rush of warmth filled Hubert's body. A daughter. He felt overwhelmed in a good way. This was probably one of the few things that could ever catch the dark mage off guard. Second to Bernadetta saying ‘I love you’ for the first time.
“Yes, you have a daughter.” Dorothea smiled, holding back a laugh, finding entertainment with Hubert’s expression. To see him so vulnerable, and happy. It was new, and definitely something she's glad to see.
“May I …” The words caught in his throat. Hubert's mouth grew dry. It’s a good thing Dorothea knew exactly what he meant. Stepping to the side and pointing to the door. Hubert takes small, nervous steps. This is a whole new experience. A new adventure awaited him. And he was ready. Finally gaining the courage, he swings open the door.
Small. That was the first thing Hubert noticed. The baby was small. She was covered in a purple blanket, fast asleep in her mother’s arms. Bernadetta looks at her husband, a weak smile reaching her face. “Isn’t she the cutest thing?” Her voice was a soft whisper. Almost unhearable. Hubert wasn’t even sure if he heard it. All his focus was on the little human. “Come say hello.”
Hubert's legs felt heavy. He had to drag himself to the chair beside the bed. Bernadetta sat up, placing the baby in Hubert's arms. It took him a while to calm down. Hubert’s heart was racing, his shoulders tense as he looked at his newborn daughter. She was so delicate. Like a flower. Hubert was afraid of accidentally hurting her. Taking in all her features, little nose, little ears, his eyes began to water.
“Are you okay?” Bernadetta asked with a smile. Loving the sight of her two favourite people in the world together. Hubert closed his eyes, letting the tear fall. “No.,” he said, trying to keep a steady voice, only to fail miserably. He was so happy. The happiest he had ever been. It was a lot to take in.
Bernadetta let out a wholehearted laugh. Finding him so cute in this situation.
The moment was perfect. It was quiet in the room, but no words needed to be exchanged. Hubert and Bernadetta were parents now. They have a baby. A connection between their blood and flesh. A child who will grow up in the new society they fought for. A child who can experience freedom.
“Do we have a name yet?” Hubert asked, finally being able to make eye contact.
Bernadetta’s eyes widened. Covering her mouth from shock. “Oh no! A name! How could I be so stupid! I completely forgot to think of a name it just-”
“How about Petunia?” Hubert himself wasn’t sure where the name came from. It just felt right. He smiled, bringing his finger to poke the baby's cheek.
Bernadetta blushed. Of course, he would pick a type of flower. But she had to admit, it really was the perfect name. She lets out another laugh. “Petunia von Vestra . . . I love it.”
Hubert brings himself closer to his wife, kissing the top of her head while placing himself beside her on the bed. He rests Petunia in between them, making sure she was well supported and comfortable.
“Welcome to the world . . . My little Petunia.”

Tied Together
Bernadetta x Linhardt
A bad feeling becomes a reality. She's left all alone in this world.
Read On AO3: HERE
It was evening. The sky matches that of a painting. Beautiful colours of red, yellow, and purple. There was a breeze. The leaves on the tree swaying back and forth. Bernadetta brought the blanket closer to her, capturing whatever warmth was left. She lacked expression, her grey eyes held no shine nor fear.
She stopped in her spot. Taking in the scenery. This place was where one would find Linhardt napping under the large oak tree. Typically a book left open, notes covering him full of research information.
It was like she could see him.
“I don’t even know what to say.” Her voice cracked. She hadn’t spoken since the incident. Refusing to bother others with her emotions. Instead, she spent time crying in her room, cursing at the goddess for taking away everything good in her life.
“Why. Why didn’t you listen to me? Why did I listen to you!?” A rush of pent up anger reaches the surface as she yells into the setting sun. Did she want someone to listen? To hear her cries for help? Bernadetta didn’t know what she wanted anymore.
“You promised me you would be fine. You promised you would return.”
His smile.
Memories of the night before he left for the mission filled her thoughts. Linhardt wore a smile, keeping Bernie calm, but his eyes told another story. The final kiss he gave her, told another story.
Linhardt didn’t know what was about to come. He wanted to hope and wish for the best, but fighting in war changed the way you see the future. You never know when it's your last day.
“Why did you leave me?”
-
“I found one of your hair ties!”
It was back during their academy days. Linhardt had a tendency of leaving things all over the place. Bernie always happened to find the lost items for him.
Linhardt smiles at her excitement. Pushing her reached out her hand away. “You can keep it.”
She lifts an eyebrow. Staring down at the white hair tie in her small hands. “Why? I don’t have much use for it.”
“Your wrist. You can wear it there. So, if I’m far away, I’m always close.”
-
She smiles softly at that memory. A tear rolling down her cheek as she ties her now longer hair up with the same hair tie he gave her.
“You’re too far away . . . “ Bernadetta wraps the blanket tighter around herself. It used to be his, the one he brought around everywhere.
She just missed him so much.
