Dimetrodon concept art
More exciting news! I am now able to share with you more of the concept art I did for the amazing upcoming NBC Universal show “Surviving Earth” premiering next year! This time for a fan favorite, Dimetrodon!
I cannot say much more than this for now but I cannot wait for you guys to see all the amazing animals that are in this show! it was truly an honor and a pleasure to work with Tim Haines and his incredible team to create this astonishing series! There is a huge team of amazing people, including other super talented paleoartists, behind it!
I hope you all like the concept art!

Super weird to have innocuously added a silly personal anecdote to a post you didn't realize was super popular...
Only to have it cross your dash a week later and find out that like 12,000 people think you're lying.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I recently had surgery, and at the time I came home, I had both my cat and one of my grandma's cats staying with me.
- Within hours of surgery, I wake up from a nap to my cat gently sniffing at my incisions with great alarm.
- I was not allowed to shower the first day after surgery, and the cats, seeing that The Large Cat is not observing its cleaning ritual, decided I must be gravely disabled and compensated by licking all the exposed skin on my arms, face, and legs.
- I currently have to sleep with a pillow over my abdomen because my cat insists on climbing on top of me and covering my incisions with her body while I sleep (which is very sweet but not exactly comfortable without the pillow). She also lays across me facing my bedroom door, presumably on guard for attackers who may try to harm me while I'm sleeping and injured.
That's love. 🐈⬛🐈❤️

Why are mules so healthy when other hybrid animals aren't?
not all hybrid animals are unhealthy, it's kind of a roll of the dice on how genetics interact with each other.
in fact, hybridization in general is turning out to be more foundational to evolution then we thought! closely related species are just stealing each other's genes all the time, turns out.
hybridization events are MUCH more common then we thought, and result in the swapping back and forth of species-specific genes, which then drives evolution in different directions for both species with the introduction of these new genes! these events are called "gene flow".
modern humans specifically are a really good example of this, actually- humans with ancestral roots in Europe and Western Asia have a TON of traits that were lifted directly from our sister species, Neanderthals, after a whole slew of gene flow events!
some of these genes are believed to be responsible for hair texture, viral immune response, metabolism, and heightened sense of smell.
and on the Eastern side of Asia, the same is true of Denisovans, another modern human sister species!
these genes provided cold and altitude tolerance, among other benefits.
basically what I'm getting at here is that we now know that the tree of life is more like a series of streams flowing back and forth into each other to reinforce evolutionary pathways, all due to closely related species looking at each other and wiggling their eyebrows suggestively.

I always struggled drawing hands before anyone told me what to do. So here is a HANDy dandy drawing reference to see the steps on an actual hand. There are three big muscles in the palm. The thumb lump is most important because without it you’ll never even get the shape right. Circle up the knuckles and draw bendy lines (red) to connect them. Make sure the fingers go from medium-tall-short-shortest just slightly (index=>pinky finger). Notice the big red squareish shape around the palm-that’s the first thing I do. Note: every infer has 2 knuckles don’t forget the thumb does too…just in a weird way.

Recently on Unhelpful File Labels in the Archives:

On-Going Project. Folders were empty.

Well Written Articles, 1999. There were no articles in this folder. There were a lot of budget reports though.

Stuff. You are killing me smalls.

Section 569-055 Knowingly burning or exploding. This was just papers shoved between files, I have a lot of questions and zero answers.
