especially since i’ve always thought percy has major ptsd from annabeth falling into tartarus. so when he holds her, he holds her really tight, like he did when he fell into tartarus with her. having her in his arms and feeling like he is protecting her eases his anxiety and panic attacks. he’s so scared of something happening to her or being separated from her that holding her tight is the only thing that helps

so her doing the same thing with his mark of achilles makes it even better. i love the thought of her just having an instinctual urge to protect that spot on him. it’s so sweet and real.

A shiver crept down Percy's spine as he trudged through the depths of the Underworld. Ever since he made his deal with Hades, an indescribable fear had taken a hold of him. What if Hades was just having a laugh? What if Annabeth wasn't following him? A bone crunched under his foot and he flinched. This gripping paranoia was playing tricks on his mind, and if he gave in and turned around, Annabeth would be lost forever.

After an undeterminable amount of time, he finally arrived at the steps of the Underworld. This is it, he thought. All I have to do is walk up these stairs and take three steps into the sunlight. No biggie.

As he climbed up the crumbling, blackened staircase, he froze. He could feel someone breathing down his neck. Doubt and apprehensiveness flooded his mind, sweeping his rationality away like a raging riptide, intent on dragging him to the seafloor. What if Hades had replaced her with a ghoul? What if she was a hollow shell of a person? Percy wanted nothing more than to sit down on the stairs and weep.

No, he thought. I defeated a Titan. I have saved the world. I am a son of Poseidon. and these currents do not rule me.

He thought of Annabeth. The twinkle in her eye. Her bright smile. The grey streak in her that matched his. They had held up the sky together. They had saved the world together. And by the gods, they would be together.

"Seaweed Brain..."

A whisper of promise danced on the wind, igniting something within Percy. He got to his feet and marched up the steps, ignoring the phobia within him that he would never see Annabeth again. As he reached the sunlight, he hesitated. He so desperately wanted to look back, to confirm she was there, to confirm she was safe. He knew that if he went into the sunlight and Hades hadn't returned her, he would not be able to try again.

But Percy also knew that if he looked back now, all hope would vanish like figments of a dream. So he took a step. And another. Turn back!! The voice in his head screamed. Make sure she's there!!

He took the final step.

But he didn't turn around. He stood there, breathing in deeply, anticipation building up in his body.

It was finally released when he heard those long-awaited words.

"Hey, Seaweed Brain!"
