If it's a child, I hope it's not an abandoned human hybrid... I've heard whispers about that happening.
If you gain its trust, one way to try and find out is to see if it can speak human language.
This isn't foolproof, as only some hybrids (since human/clown hybrids are so rare, we don't really know how often it happens) can ever speak human.
While most clowns can understand human language if they're raised around us and taught to (the way dogs can) they neither think in the same ways we do or have the same psychology, and despite the visual similarities, like apes, they don't have the physical biology in their throats to formulate human speech (specifically, if I remember correctly, the larynx isn't shaped in such a way that facilitates human speech).
Hybrids sometimes can learn and speak human to a degree, but no non-hybrid clowns can more than mimic human speech (ie the way birds do).
I’ve recently seen a stray clown wandering around my neighborhood, it seems friendly but a little shy. I can’t tell if it’s of the toy breed or just a very young clown. It has some juggalo adjacent markings but i think it’s some kind of mix. There dosent seem to be any other clowns around so i’m worried that it was abandoned by an irresponsible clown owner. I’m very new to clown husbandry so i’m not sure what to do in this situation. I’m hoping to get pictures so i can get help identifying the breed. Possibly a jester/juggalo/toy mix? I’m not sure how to identify breeds but i’ve learned that young clowns usually don’t have face markings and they appear as they get older, so i’m pretty sure its not a very young clown because of the markings. i’m not sure if i should take it in becuse i know some strays can be hostile. i’m going to try and leave it food and see if i can get closer to it. lmk if you have any advice!! id really appreciate it :))

Personally, I'm against all surgical alterations of clowns unless it's absolutely necessary for their health.
However, I have seen that some clowns (such as those rescued from abusive or severely neglectful living situations, and manifest this by) having hyper defensiveness &/or hyper aggression can benefit from being alerted, and this can be an option when less invasive treatments don't work, and the clown's quality of life is impacted.
Anyone have any opinions on clown spaying/neutering?

I can't tell you which breed to choose, but I can suggest HOW to choose the right breed for you.
DON'T start with looks. In fact, before you look at ANY (more, lol) clowns, look at your own life first, to get a good idea of what home your clown will be moving into.
How often are you home/away? If youre away more than six hours of the day, do you have the ability for someone to at least swing by and take care of your clown's needs so they're not left alone for too long and go without. Many clowns suffer separation anxiety, can form destructive habits, etc.
Do you live alone/who lives with you/pets etc
Space, indoors and out- where will the clown sleep, eat, play, exercise, what's the climate like where you're at? Etc
What resources do you have for care (food, clothing, training, toys, treats, checkups, vaccines/medicine, vitamins, dental, grooming).
Do you have a home or apartment, own or rent? Are there HOA, municipal or other restrictions on clown breeds where you live?
Now that you've got an idea of what you've got on your side, it's best to first narrow down the list of possibilities (there are SO many, so this is a good thing!!) by looking at what matches best with the things you considered above.
Since you said you're new to clown husbandry, you can pass on all the high-skill breeds such as breeds that need a friend or pack to thrive, have highly specialized diets, are difficult to train, etc.
If you can afford a professional groomer, or have the skills yourself, then you can include higher-care breeds (for example hair only: large, thick, round, beautiful afros; long, fine cotton-candy hair, as well as shaving, trimming stubble, moisturizing and protecting a bald head from skin useless etc. A lot of people don't consider just how much care clowns can require to thrive!) If you can't, then lower-care breeds will be best for you. ***Note: be thorough when you seek out groomers, only some include laundry care in their services, while some others will offer discounts if you so that yourself!***
What energy level matches you best? Do you want a layabout clown, a clown to join you for a run through the woods, a clown to go for a nice day in the park, a clown that enjoys the mental stimulation of sport/competition, clowns that like kids, other clowns, &/or animals, etc.
What temperament matches you best? This is similar to the last, but not quite the same. For instance: a mime can expend a lot of energy in a single span of time, but afterwards, they're perfectly happy to rest and sleep away the day and night, while a rodeo breed can and will go all day long if you'll let them and require fewer, smaller breaks rather than long stretches of rest. Both would be great for sporting, but the mime is better suited to people who like occasional high activity with down time otherwise, and a rodeo breed would need someone with a lot of time to spend with the clown regularly, with less down time, for them to thrive. Compare this to a Dobermann vs an Australian Cattle Dog.
Are you a vegan, do you have allergy concerns, do you prefer locally sourced foods, most clown breeds have highly specialized diets, and it's much easier when their needs and your own aren't in conflict.
Once you've gotten all breeds down to just those who would fit into your lifestyle, home and abilities, you're almost done! The only thing left to do is search for a local clown-shelter or adoption website to find your new companion!!
Please dont do through a clown breeder.
There are many reasons for this, enough to go into a separate post, but suffice it to say that adoption is much better for clowns and clown husbandry in every way.
You can decide to go with a specific breed based on looks first, or just browse through what's available until you see one that you feel drawn to.
There are small websites like AdoptAClown which have browse the clown's in multiple shelters etc, and you can adjust search filters like distance, breed, age, etc.
If you're looking for a specific breed, there are also many breed-based rescue websites online.
Good luck!! I hope the perfect clown for you finds their forever home with you soon!!! 😊🤡♥️🤡😊
Thinking of going to my local shelter to adopt a clown, any tips or information anyone can give me on specific breeds? (Like habitat and personality)
(I only recently discovered the joy of learning about pet clowns, so I don't know much)

Reminder that feeding a mime anything other than fresh meat IS abuse. They are carnivores and require fresh meat and I'm sick and tired of seeing people try to feed their mimes fancy vegan stuff. They don't deserve that treatment and need to be fed properly. They have sharp teeth for a reason. Don't even get me started on the disgusting behavior of people feeding tragics pellets or dry foods marketed to them. So many people get the tragic dry food just because it's dyed black and claims to be healthy. It is not. It's full of corn and additives that are only fitting for railroad clown consumption. If they're fed dry food, they need iron and niacin supplements and their blood pressure will lower, not even mentioning the increased risk of blood clots and heart problems that has been scientifically proven to be linked to dry food marketed to tragic clowns.
