Black Widow’s director Cate Shortland on ‘involuntary hysterectomy’ clap-back

“So Eric, who is our writer, had written a joke about women being in bad moods because they have their period, Shortland recalls. And I remember Florence and Scarlett and I reading it and just being like, ‘Oh, my God, this is ridiculous.’

The director says she almost cut the joke entirely, but after discussing with her actors, ultimately decided to “answer it.” She didn’t clarify if that meant improvising on the day of or going back for traditional rewrites, but the outcome was the final digression on involuntary hysterectomies.

I love it, Shortland says. Because it’s like, if you’re gonna make that joke, I’m gonna unleash Florence Pugh on you. She’s gonna Yelena you. It’s one of my favorite moments in the film.”

Anon Requested: Hey I have a request btw your fics are amazing!:) So basically yelena belova x reader where reader wants yelena to know how much she loves her so she puts chocolate and surprises in the pockets of her vest and maybe even puts little notes in there

Word Count: 590

Yelena moved quietly as she climbed out of bed and pulled on her clothes and her vest. She was already out of the apartment by the time she felt something inside of her vest pocket.

With a confused frown on her face, she reached inside of her pocket, soon pulling out a handful of Hershey’s and a note. Her frown was replaced by a small, crooked smile when she saw your handwriting.

Because I’ll never stop giving my girl all my kisses. xo

The blonde chuckled, tucking the note back into her pocket as she tossed one of the chocolate candies into her mouth. She snacked on the sweet treats as she climbed into her sister’s car.

“What did she do?” Yelena grinned at her sister as she showed her the now empty candy wrappers, popping the last bit of chocolate into her mouth. Then she showed her sister the note.

Natasha chuckled as she handed the piece of paper back to her. “She’s corny,” the redhead chuckled. “No. She’s sweet.” Yelena’s pun caused her sister to roll her eyes.

“The two of you were made for each other.” Her response was a small nod of her head as she looked over your note once more before tucking it away again, keeping it safe inside her pocket.

That was the first time you’d ever left anything inside of her vest. The second time was after she left for a mission that you made her promise she would come back from, breathing and in one piece.

It was a leaf. That’s right–an actual leaf. You’d carefully carved her initials as well as your own into it, followed by a small heart. Yelena had you frame it when she came home, the newest note with it.

Because you make me fall more and more in love with you every day. xo

The third time was at Christmas. She hadn’t celebrated the joyous holiday since before the Red Room, but she wanted nothing more than to spend it with you and to make you happy.

Yelena had thrown on her vest, as well as a heavier jacket after you had scolded her about going out into the Winter air without proper attire. She smiled when she saw the piece of metal and the note.

Because no one but you will ever hold the key to my heart. xo

On Christmas morning, the former assassin found out that the key was one that would allow her entrance into the home you’d found. The home that you spent the next four days moving into.

The first thing that anyone would see when they walked into your Ohio home was the framed notes on the wall. Yelena often stared at them, a small, crooked smile on her face as she read over your words.

The fourth time was Yelena’s personal favorite. It was New Year’s Eve. You had left a small, empty, velvet box in her pocket and the note that was with it left her full of anticipation.

You proposed to Yelena that night, right as the ball dropped. Her makeshift family–Alexei, Melina, and Natasha–were all there to celebrate along with you. But you were the only one she saw.

You were surprised when she roughly crashed her lips onto yours, but didn’t hesitate to kiss her back. You melted into her arms as she wrapped them around you. “Hmm, what did you do that for, baby?”

“Because I love you.”
