BA1a Statement of Intent
My aim for this project is to outline the theme of identity, exploring sub themes within this including, class ‘wars’, queer politics and identities within modern domesticity (criticising the family unit).
Inspiration for these topics stems from artists such as; Charlotte Prodger’s ‘Brigit’, exploring ethereality of locations and spaces, the vastness of history and origins of names, Dorothea Tanning’s macabre surrealism to convey ideas of death and loneliness in ‘Maternity’, literature works such as Dickens’ ‘Great Expectations’, on ideas to do with self reflection/ evaluation and class differences.
I want to combine Orwell’s ‘1984’s surrealist commentary on facism with Tanning’s similarly surrealist paintings. In works like ‘Maternity’ there is an undeniable feminist message which I feel would twin well with ‘1984’. This will result in my outcome(s) exploring themes of misogyny and patriarchy in the West.  In terms of ethics, I will not be using vulnerable external subjects in my practise, all research will be based on my own experience, or non-vulnerable subjects of whom have given informed consent.
My practice will reflect these ideas using film, plaster, papier mâché, acrylic on canvas; possibly in the form of mixed media installation. Playing with shape, form and texture is also something I plan on exploring during this project, shape & form especially in the way they take up space and affect the psychogeography of the area they are exhibited in when finished.
