Why I Do What I Do
By Spotnight founder and CEO, David Bailey
A little over a year ago, I started a company with the mission of helping people have better nights out with their friends. Along the way, I've observed how people behave on nights out, I've listened to the way people plan and decide on where they go out, and even how they talk about their nights out the day after. It's helped me learn a lot about the ingredients of what makes a night out great.
A lot of what is obvious to me now wasn't obvious at all when I started, like why I even care about improving people's nights out? What is it about better nights out that inspires us? The underlying reason is the idea that better nights out can make people happier.
I became fascinated with the science of happiness about six years ago and since then I've read every book I can on the topic. The research supports the hypothesis that, for many people, good nights out contribute meaningfully to their overall well-being.
Nights out are where people socialise. It's a mistake to say a night out is just about meeting up with your closest friends. On average, people on nights out interact with over ten people they've never met before. I've lost count of the times that groups of people that regularly go out together tell me they "met on another night out and became good friends". There is conclusive evidence to suggest that increased social connections actually makes us happier.
Nights out are where people play. Modern life is fast-paced, stressful, and increasingly focused on work. Nights out are where we let our hair down, forget the stresses and strains of work and focus on enjoying ourselves. On nights out we joke, smile and laugh together. Many of us enjoy drinking, dressing up and showing off our moves the dance floor. As they say, all work and no play make Jack a dull boy.
Nights out are where people dance. Studies have even shown that the rhythmic beat of dance music can actually induce a euphoric state, similar to that of meditation. Dancing is great physical exercise. Many of us prefer dancing to going to the gym because it's more fun. After a week of sitting in front of a decks, exercise helps us both physically and mentally.
Going on a "night out", in the way I mean it, differs from going to concerts, shows and other "events". The focus of most nights out isn't to consume entertainment, but to engage in the kinds of social and physical behaviours that make us happy. This understanding makes it easy to see our core product isn't about consuming events, but giving people a way to experience better nights.
I'm excited to explore new possibilities to achieve our goal of making people happier via improving their nights out. I'm certain that new and fun ideas will emerge and we can make the world a funner and happier place for all of us.

Want to work somewhere that could turn into a party? Cafe Kaizen, the brainchild of Dan Kapp, Timo Weber and Jin Nilsson, is your place. This new Asian fusion hangout, opening next week, is the latest place to hit Mayfair. Tuck into some dim sum and sashimi, wash it down with some mint tea and finish up your work, before browsing the art, lingerie and vintage treasures on offer. And that's all before the cocktails begin.

Morning Gloryville is taking over our cities with pumping music, power smoothies and a festival to kick your ass out of bed in the morning. We caught up with the nutters to talk unicorns, glitter and world domination.
What is this Morning Gloryville malarky?
Morning Gloryville ~ Rave Your Way Into The Day! is an immersive morning dance experience for those who dare to start there day in style! Nothing wakes you up more than a soul-shaking dance, electrifying music, soothing massage, transforming yoga, delicious superfood smoothies and for those who need it, a mind blowing double espresso! We've rewritten the rules and turned clubbing on it's head. Morning Gloryville is not about dancing or prancing, it’s about breakfast raving like it’s the 80’s/90's; bringing the same sense of euphoria, ecstasy and oneness, only you’re completely sober, awake, conscious and authentic.
Describe Morning Gloryville in three words...
The best start.
Best morning you have EVER had at Morning Gloryville?
Our first birthday rave in East London was pretty banging! The whole room was buzzing with love and good vibes and we were treated to a feast for the senses. There were hoola hoop performances, live instruments, live art, costumes, glitter and of course dancing. We even celebrated with bubbles!
Who would you love to play at Morning Gloryville?
Daft Punk, Groove Armada, Lauren Laverne, Chemical Brothers, Annie Mac, 2ManyDJs, Basement Jaxx, Annie Nightingale, Nightmares on Wax, Deadmau5
Tell us something we don't know about Morning Gloryville?
Morning Gloryville needs to be seen to be believed. If you've never been, there's a whole world out there that you don't know!
If you could take ONE song to a desert island what would it be?
Three Little Birds - Bob Marley
What's your tipple of choice?
We wake ourselves up with an espresso or some cacao and get our morning dose of vitamins from a superfood smoothie.
What's your morning party outfit of choice?
Comfortable shoes for dancing, colourful leggings that are almost louder than the music, Morning Gloryville T-shirt, dressing gown and a tub or two lot of glitter. Anything goes - we dress to sweat and wear whatever makes us feel alive.
Morning or night person?
Believe it or not, we're not all morning people here... in fact that's part of the reason Morning Gloryville was created. Morning's just became a whole lot better!
Favourite person to party with?
There is no one person better than the next to party with. Cockerel-unicorn hybrids on the other hand...
What can we expect from Morning Gloryville this year?
Morning Gloryville will have launched in 11 new cities by the end of July (that's New York, Barcelona, Amsterdam, Brighton, Zurich, San Francisco, Dublin, Paris, West London, Tokyo and Sydney) and we're not stopping there! We are also set to open the main stage at Bestival with Mr Motivator as well as appearing at Edinburgh Fringe and Wilderness festivals. Load up on glitter, sweatbands, stuffed toys and yoga mats because Morning Gloryville is set on spoiling their community this year. We might even have another sleepover. Sshhh...

There is so much going on this weekend and you know how much we love weekends. Which is why we are pretty blooming excited  for the unveiling of the Three Sods Brewery, who will be hosting a summer beer festival/launch this Saturday 19th July. Hanging out in the Hoxton Arches, guests will slurp back 15 different varieties of fine-craft ale - think Belgian bugger and the Mud puddler - and chow down on BBQ food.Yan Yates & The Two Dollar Hookers, and DJ Cardiac Arrest & Tropicalis, will be driving this baby well into the night. £30 including all beer - yes you heard right.
We’ll raise a glass (of beer) to that...

Jon Scales runs the crazy Carnivalle and we caught him in between acts to talk passionfruit martinis, Michael Buble, and expecting the unexpected.
What is Carnivalle?
Carnivalle is an exclusive "evening experience" (as we like to call it) that brings the controlled chaos, liveliness, energy and exuberance of a Carnival into an A-list VIP nightclub setting...
Describe it in three words?
Expect the unexpected
What's been the best night there?
It's very hard to compare the nights at Carnivalle as each night is totally unique. We like to keep guests on their toes and by keeping the theme and the entertainment "fresh" each week we are finding that many of the guests that we have seen for the launch have returned and had a completely new experience. Without sounding too much like a politician I honestly can't pick a favourite! They have all been amazing….
Who would be your ideal guest there?
Due to the nature of the entertainment we like guests to have an open mind. Some of our acts require audience participation and as we can only hold 150 guests we hope everyone gets involved with the theme as it really helps create the carnival atmosphere... and hopefully spends a bit of money as well!
What's your ideal night out in London?
When I am not working I like to go to bar's and pubs. I've been involved in the London nightclub scene now for 7 years and probably get 2 weekends off a year so it's nice to be able to go out and turn the phone off and just relax.
If you could take one song to a desert island what would it be?
What's your favourite tipple?
Passionfruit martini from the Mayfair bar or a nice chilled corona
What can we expect from Carnivalle this year?
Expect the unexpected...

Oh yeah baby. The party has started. And Casa Fat Radish is where it's at. Kicking off at The Mansion, a 19th century private pad in the heart of Santa Teresa, Rio’s bohemian enclave, it will be open for the entire month of the World Cup.
With a restaurant from New York’s The Fat Radish, a signature cocktail bar, World Cup Screening Room, private dining room and swimming pool, you better start working your magic for an invite.
