Prologue-B: Cogs in the Machine [#2]

Immediately I’m face-to-face with the brightest, most obnoxious-looking aesthetic nightmare I’ve seen to date.

“Didja sleep in or something? Everyone else came out of their rooms, like, an hour ago! Oh, oh yeah! What’s your name? I’m Hotaru Fujioka, Ultimate Rube Goldberg Machine Builder! Nice to meetcha!”

...Is she going to let me talk any time soon? I guess now’s as good as a time as any.

“Uh...yeah. I’m Mei Hirose. Ultimate Myrmecologist–”

“Oh! You’re a scientist too?! You see, I–”

I clear my throat loudly, and Hotaru immediately stops in her tracks. Thank goodness, I’m not sure how long we would’ve been here if I just let her go on.

“You said that there were others, right? Can you show me where they are?”

“–Ah, right. Follow me!”

Prologue-B: Cogs in the Machine [#1]

What a bizarre room.

...Is what any other person would probably say, but I can’t help but be intrigued. Glass walls with massive ant farms within, with plastic tubes that connect the walls to various glass boxes with different habitats and colonies...it’s both ridiculous and amazing. Ridiculously amazing.

I’ve probably spent about an hour just watching ants farm aphids for honeydew before I realized that I don’t actually recall how I came to this place.

Well, clearly this is a place made for me, after all, so I guess that’s a good thing. Maybe I don’t have to be that alarmed. There’s also the bedroom I woke up in with a bathroom connected to it, so I don’t have to worry about having a place to sleep and hygiene…

...Oh yeah, food.

I suppose that ants are a suitable source of protein, but...ugh, that’s such a waste. These ants are worth far more than just food.

“Guess I have to leave this room eventually...”

There is another door here, after all. I never actually bothered to check if it was locked. I put my hand on the door knob and it clicks open easily. And immediately…

“You’re finally out!”
