Hey weird question but what happens if you put two reasonably likeable anthropologists of wildly different cultures together in the same room? Do they study each other? CAN they? Is it like an infinite conversational feedback loop? I'm imagining two dogs eternally sniffing each others butts at the park

so many articles about Fast Fashion, not enough articles about what the hell is happening to the quality of clothes
Like okay. People own more pieces of clothing nowadays and they wear them a lesser number of times before throwing them out. BUT.
Why do we pretend like this is pure vanity or careless wastefulness, rather than forced by the qualities of the clothes themselves?
The other day, I was going through boxes of old clothes in the basement in search of fabric to practice sewing on. The difference in quality of the fabrics themselves is shocking! The worn-out old jeans from twenty years ago are MUCH thicker and tougher than anything more recent. My old baby clothes are made as sturdy as my work clothes from today.
In the past couple years, I have had entire seams rip out of clothes on the first wash. That's not normal!
Polyester blend shirts that feel cozy and soft when they are new, become scratchy and rough after 20 washes or so. I am trying to avoid polyester, but it gets harder and harder; the other day i couldn't find a single pack of crew socks that was 100% cotton. SOCKS!
Also, pilling is out of control. The newest pants I bought developed pills within a single day of walking around campus with a backpack.
These companies are trying to frog-boil us but touching clothes from twenty years ago, the useless crap of today would stick out like a sore thumb...

Attention Pennsylvania voters!
Senator Bob Casey’s race is now at a margin of 0.53%.
An automatic recount in PA is triggered with a margin of 0.5%. That’s a difference of 0.03% or a little over 2,000 votes. We need to make sure every ballot is counted here, and there’s thousands of uncounted ballots right now due to voter error.
Did you mail in a ballot? Check to see it was accepted here:
If it says anything other than accepted/counted/etc, your ballot needs your attention. A mistake in filling it out means that your ballot will not count unless you “cure” it. Check your county’s curing policies:
See full instructions for curing by county here.
You have until November 12 to cure your ballot in PA.
Do you know someone who mailed in a PA ballot? Please pass these links on to them. You may be the difference between their vote counting or not in a super close race.
Everyone else, you can help PA voters cure their ballots. If you live in Pennsylvania, you can help canvass in your county (see links in this thread). If you are in another state, you can sign up to call voters and help them cure by phone.
Want to help another state? Sign up for a shift through November 19.

If it makes any of you feel better, Donald Trump will have an uphill battle to change the constitution. He will need:
-2/3 of Senators (60)
-2/3 of the House of Representatives (290)
-3/4 of the states (38)
In 2026, 33 senate seats will be up for grabs, and we’ll be able to vote for people who are against Trump and his ideals.
Breathe and remain hopeful because it’s not over. We can still fight and make Trump’s last four years hell.

This is a reminder to:
Never mention a possible pregnancy/abortion to anyone, especially not through a social media app messaging service such as messenger, WhatsApp, Instagram DMs, Snapchat, etc.
Delete all period tracking apps and to start tracking using a planner or physical calendar
Book appointments for a form of birth control if possible, or to always carry condoms for yourself and other
Look into sterilization options if that is the route you want to go down (here is a list of 1000 doctors willing to sterilize you without a fight)
Protect your fellow person, protect the women in your life, the queer people, the disabled people, everyone will be affected by this
Form communities. Tell your people that you love them. Protect one another. Check in on one another. None of us are alone.

So this is probably late and not gonna reach many people in the US at this point. But I highly encourage newly turned 18 year olds considering not voting to stop listening to the polls and articles telling you it doesn't matter.
My first election was in 2008. We'd had years of Republican hell. I saw the racist shit that came out of 9/11. I was pissed as were many new voters my age.
I voted with that anger. And so did so many 18 year olds just as fed up with the previous administration.
And guess what? Obama WON.
That would not have happened if people hadn't gone to vote. It happened because everyone, new or old voters got out and voted.
So if you're thinking "it doesn't matter" -STOP. It does matter. If your votes didn't matter then the right wing wouldn't be working so hard to convince you otherwise.
If it didn't matter then why is the far right trying to sabotage voting stations and invalidate votes?
YOUR VOTE MATTERS! EVERY SINGLE ONE!
So go grab your friends, classmates, coworkers and vote like it matters. Because it does.
We face fascist takeover if 45 wins. So vote.

A reminder about the "red mirage:"
Tomorrow, early results will likely suggest that Trump is leading. This is not because more people overall voted for him; rather, because rural districts have smaller populations than urban or suburban districts, and they tend to vote red. Later, votes in areas with higher populations will be counted, and these tend to skew blue.
Trump will likely demand that the vote counts cease while he's ahead. Just remember where this is coming from: The man who said that we shouldn't test so many people for COVID so it wouldn't look like it was running out of control wants to stop counting votes so it won't look like he's getting his butt kicked.

Friendly reminder that almost half of the states in the U.S. have same day registration! This means you can go to the polling center for your location, register there, and cast your vote same day. So if you are over 18, are a U.S. citizen, and live in one of the states listed below, it is not too late to register and vote! I’m going to put notes for some of the states where voting is extra important due to the political climate of the state.
California
Colorado
Connecticut
D.C.
Hawaii
Idaho
Illinois
Iowa - recent polls indicate state could flip from red to blue
Maine
Maryland
Michigan
Minnesota
Montana
Nevada
New Hampshire
New Mexico
New York
North Carolina - swing state! Could go red or blue
North Dakota - voter registration not required
Utah
Vermont
Virginia
Washington
Wisconsin - swing state! Could go red or blue
Wyoming
You can go here for more info on voter registration
I also have a huge list of voting resources here

Ok so at this point I've had two people roll up to me in manual wheelchairs, well, one of them was somebody pushing somebody who was nonverbal at the time, but it still counts. They asked me why I had zip ties around my tires.
It's winter where I'm living and we have really bad snow. And the snow plow people are really bad at their jobs probably because there aren't snow plow people who clean sidewalks. As a solution I got to thinking about how I could increase the traction on my wheels. And the most redneck thing I could think of was taking a bunch of zip ties and tying them around my wheels. They last surprisingly long, and work surprisingly well. It's basically the same premise as chains for your tires during the winter.
I chose to space them out pretty evenly so there's about one for every spoke. You could probably do more or less depending on how many you want and how much traction you get but I wouldn't go more than three per spoke. I realize that it's a bit later in the winter, and I probably should have made a post about this sooner, but I came up with it about a week ago. So please share this, even if you're not disabled, because there are tons of people I know who are stuck in their houses because they can't get around in the snow. A pack of zip ties costs about $5, which compared to $200 knobby snow tires is a big save, and if you want to invest you could get colored zip ties.
