Canada Post said Friday its financial situation is so grim it could run out of operating funds in less than a year, after the Crown corporation posted another whopping pre-tax loss of $748 million in 2023.
In its annual report released late Friday afternoon, the company predicts "larger, unsustainable losses in future years" without major changes to its operating model.
"Even with Canada Post's recently proposed stamp price increase, the Corporation projects that, without additional borrowing and refinancing, it will fall below its required operating and reserve cash requirements by early 2025," the report says.
Canada Post has been losing money since 2018. In the last six years, its losses have totalled $3 billion. [...]

#I don't think the average Canadian realizes that Canada Post is run as an independently funded corporation#I hear people discuss it the same way they do education and healthcare#CUPW members shouldn't be stuck footing the bill for this kind of mismanagement#Especially when Amazon is subsidizing its own package delivery system to seem much more affordable

I've been seeing a lot fewer of this style of fibre sheet webbing around my neighbourhood this year, and more large webs with individual ropes for threads. Seems like a much safer option for wildlife, less of a pain in the ass to install and clean up, and more durable so you don't need to buy more every year. Hopefully that trend continues or spreads.
All of my friends that work at wildlife rehab centers have had to untangle animals from this stuff, or had animals brought in that died in it. This is especially nasty for small owl species.

My dad had a copy of this book and taught me chess with it when I was a kid. Not only is the artwork fantastic, but the language is evocative and accessible, painting a strong mental image of the story of a chess match. Highly recommended!
Just today I got to see a chess book that I remember reading as a little kid. While it didn't give me a lifelong passion for chess, it did give me a lifelong passion for fantasy for its artwork.
The book is "Chess for Young Beginners" from 1975, and here's some of the artwork:
Like, this artwork goes hard. I especially appreciate the colour scheme for the black pieces, with its browns, bronzes, reds and oranges.
This artwork is amazing, evocative, exciting and dramatic. I recommend giving it a look if you have a chance - you can probably scrounge up a PDF of this thing with a bit of searching.

Fuck Andy Fillmore. The reason the homeless population is increasing isn't because the municipal government has been too lax on quashing homeless camps and now they're coming here from across the country - what fucking homeless people have the money for cross-country travel, Andy? It's increasing because of the fucking housing market and the fact that parts of Halifax have a 0% vacancy rate. His campaign reads like someone who is desperate to undo the fractional improvements that the municipality has made to help homeless people, especially given that he also campaigned on reducing council tax - that's the only source of money the municipal government has, Andy, how the fuck is your mayor's office going to afford to do anything you piece of shit.
Former Liberal MP Andy Fillmore will be the next mayor of Halifax, fending off challenges from his nearest rivals in a crowded field of candidates to win Saturday's municipal election. He told a room full of supporters at a pub in north-end Halifax that he was "grateful and humbled" to be elected the next mayor of Halifax. "This is Halifax's time," he said. "Our opportunity is here in every corner of HRM. We'll embrace it, we'll meet this moment." Fillmore, a city planner before he entered federal politics in 2015, has criticized the municipality for allowing new homeless encampments, and campaigned on pledges such as speeding up building permit approvals and improving the flow of traffic.

Getting Cornwallis's name off of anything is good, but "Queen Street" is not a great anti-colonial statement.
Council for the Town of Lunenburg has decided to move forward with the renaming of "Cornwallis Street" to "Queen Street" more than a year and a half after the town approved recommendations from its anti-racism special committee. This comes several months after a councillor was removed as deputy mayor after he was critical of the decision to go with Queen Street. A motion to rescind the name change to Queen was put before council by Coun. Ed Halverson — the same councillor who was removed from deputy mayor duties — on Tuesday and resulted in a tied 3-3 vote, leaving the motion dead on the floor. The street was originally named after Edward Cornwallis, who the town described as a "controversial former governor of Nova Scotia" who "issued a 'scalping proclamation' bounty in 1749 to anyone who killed Mi'kmaw men, women, and children."

Worth bearing in mind NSPower is only going there because parent company Emera also owns Tampa Electric. Same reason they've helped out previously in the Caribbean, where Emera owns Grand Bahamas Power Company in the Bahamas and Emera Caribbean in Barbados and Dominican Republic.
That's not to say that NSPower's employees don't care about emergency relief, they have a lot of people who are passionate about helping during and after storms. But as a publically regulated company, official corporate mobilization really only happens if it's required to support adjacent power grids (NB and NL), or the public can be compensated for those resources by the parent company.
Based Canada. Now I can't talk shit anymore.

For the candidates for councillor, it's worth checking their individual campaign sites that are linked from the official halifax.ca page. I think it would be hard to summarize all of their platforms across all districts in a way that took into account the needs of those specific communities. If you have any particular areas of interest, it may be worth checking with local groups to see if they have any recommendations - for instance, the local ACORN branch for concerns about housing and rents.
That said, I appreciate this article from the coast for its look at some of the mayoral candidates. Not living in Pam Lovelace's district, I had missed the earlier reporting on the SLAPP case she brought against her own constituents, and the last thing we need from a mayor is someone who shuts down public comment.
Do you have any resources/articles regarding the upcoming Halifax mayoral election? The official website is woefully lacking in actual information about the candidate's policies, I'm not sure if it's out there somewhere I'm just not looking or if we're just supposed to vote based on vibes???
Hope this helps. I don't live in NS, but I'll try my best to find some resources for you:

Glad to see this is getting attention again. Guaranteed the reason the NB government shut down the investigation is because so many of the victims are from riverside communities and they're scared that Irving's pulp and paper industry will be implicated.
That said, I really hope the source of this illness is something easier to change than corporate malfeasance from a company that controls the province's media and effectively has the government in its pocket.
There’s a renewed call for a public inquiry into why so many New Brunswickers have come down with neurodegenerative symptoms and illnesses.
When an initial cluster of over 40 people presented with similar symptoms – muscle spasms, atrophy and progressive dementia – it was thought to be Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, until they tested negative.
That’s when a Moncton-based neurologist thought they could be experiencing an unknown brain disease. The cluster was initially focused in the Moncton and Acadian Peninsula areas of the province.
But after over a year of confusing back-and-forth for patients and their families, the province of New Brunswick halted further investigation by its federal counterparts, saying there was an explanation for each patients’ illness.
This week, New York Times Magazine released an article that calls that into question, citing that neurologist Dr. Alier Marrero believes the number of people seeking help with similar symptoms is now over 400.
It has sparked Green Party MLA Megan Mitton to call for a public inquiry into what happened internally between the province and Ottawa, as well as further testing, including environmental, to try and find patients some answers.

Decent chance they already had it after ordering the least expensive "baby shredder" on the market, and failing to notice it was from an office supply company instead of a military equipment contractor.
Israeli ambassador to the UN having an absolute normal one as he takes to the podium with the world’s tiniest shredder to shred copies of the UN charter ahead of a vote that would grant more privileges to Palestinians within the UN.

Yeah, I'd watch Delicious in Hades II. Probably going to be a lot better than the first Delicious in Hades, given that there's bound to be things other than chthonic fish in a pomegranate and ambrosia reduction.
Can't wait to learn how to safely prepare food with deathcap and nightshade.
