E-trucks are so costly! Pay-per-use?
With hauling companies wary of electrifying their trucking fleets, Scania wants to offer a non-committal option: e-truck sharing.
The Volkswagen AG-controlled truckmaker is combining with logistics firm sennder Technologies to deploy 100 e-trucks to carriers in Germany starting next year on a pay-per-use model, with a plan to expand to 5,000 vehicles by 2030, the companies said Wednesday.
By getting more e-trucks on the road, Scania hopes to build momentum for investment in infrastructure, such as charging stations, needed for a broader shift to battery-powered trucks.
“This is a really important enabler,” Gustaf Sundell, head of ventures and new business at Scania, said in an interview. “Lowering the barrier of risk for these super important players is really key.”
The world’s biggest truckmakers have set targets for transitioning to battery-electric and fuel-cell trucks and buses amid tightening regulations. Daimler Truck estimates they’ll make up as much as 60% of its Europe sales by 2030. Volkswagen’s Traton and Volvo are aiming for 50% share in that time frame.

B.C. port dispute could be finally done.
By The Canadian Press, Hana Mae Nassar, and Charlie Carey
Last Updated Jul 31, 2023, 8:52AM PDT.
A late-night breakthrough could herald an end to British Columbia’s long-running port dispute, with the longshore workers’ union and the employers’ association announcing a new tentative agreement.
Details of the deal haven’t been released, but both sides say in a joint statement issued Sunday night that they are recommending their members to ratify it.
The International Longshore and Warehouse Union Canada (ILWU) and the BC Maritime Employers Association (BCMEA) say the new tentative deal was reached with the assistance of the Canada Industrial Relations Board.
The dispute, which initially saw workers walk off the job at more than 30 port terminals and other sites for 13 days at the beginning of July, entered a new phase late Friday night when members of the union rejected a previous potential agreement with employers.
Pressure had been mounting for federal intervention if a deal failed to eventuate.
Parties including Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, the Business Council of Canada, and the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, have all urged the federal government to legislate an end to the dispute if it continued.
The days-long strike stopped billions of dollars’ worth of goods from moving in and out of some of the country’s busiest ports.

BC Ports Labor Action: Update July 7th 2023
The ongoing International Longshore and Warehouse Union Canada labor action is significantly affecting the operations and logistics at all ocean ports of entry into British Columbia. The labor action has disrupted the regular flow of cargo handling and transportation services.
As a consequence, shipments currently at any port or en route to BC are unable to be Customs released or collected from over 30 Westcoast ports.
Prolonged waiting times, storage fees, and increased transportation costs may result, and associated fees relating to the below can be expected:
Port appointment reservation
Port congestion
Port storage
Handling (if there is a freight forwarder involved)
Drayage (local delivery to destination and empty container return)          - Steamship detention/demurrage (Empty containers return to the location chosen by the steamship line)          - Due to congestion, there can be delays in returning the empty container          - Steamship lines may NOT waive any demurrage incurred due to the chosen empty return location being unable to accept any further containers          - Carriers that have been contracted for the drayage may also charge a chassis rental fee for every day the empty container is unable to be returned, as this ties up that chassis from accepting new drayage orders          - Block stow charges are applicable when a container is on the port, buried under other containers, and inaccessible
Please reach out to our Freight Team at 604-273 6416 or [email protected] to discuss options for those goods not yet on the water.

Air Canada Cargo and Emirates SkyCargo have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)
Under the terms of the MoU, Air Canada Cargo and Emirates SkyCargo will work closely on a number of initiatives, which include expanding cargo interline options and block space agreements, pending any required regulatory approvals. These enhancements aim to offer freight customers of both airlines access to more capacity on a larger combined global network.
Air Canada Cargo will have access to Emirates SkyCargo’s high frequency distribution network through the belly-hold of Emirates scheduled passenger flights to over 140 global destinations, as well as the additional capacity offered by 11 freighters currently in the Emirates fleet. In return, SkyCargo will have access to over 60 cities in Canada and more than 150 cities across five continents through Air Canada Cargo thanks to a fleet of Boeing 767 freighters and   the belly-hold capacity of Air Canada’s scheduled passenger flights.
Both airlines bring particular experience in handling unique cargo, such as oil and gas drilling equipment, car parts and pharmaceuticals on their dedicated fleet of freighters or passenger aircraft.

CBSA Assessment and Revenue Management (CARM) portal update
Everything you need to know about the CBSA Assessment and Revenue Management (CARM) portal, a multi-year initiative that will transform the collection of duties and taxes for goods imported into Canada. The release process will not change, however, importers will be required to post their own financial security in the form of a surety bond or cash bond with Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), and be responsible for paying duties and taxes directly to CBSA.
