In season six, all the discord between Spuffy unfolded because Buffy was drawn to Spike’s shadow - his darkness, raw and unyielding - while Spike was captivated by Buffy’s radiance - her strength, integrity, and unshakable sense of responsibility. But Spike sought to pull her into the depths of his darkness to have her only for himself but faltered, for it was a path she could not tread. Buffy, in turn, understood that no matter how fiercely she tried, she could never guide Spike fully into her light not without his soul. Yet, in their conflict, they became each other’s catalysts. They challenged and inspired one another to confront their truest selves, igniting a journey of growth. Only when they embraced both their shadows and their light did they transcend their struggles, emerging as the healthiest couple in the series.

Watching 2x11 right now and I know Joyce is under some kind of mind control or drugged or whatever, but it made my blood boil when Buffy told her that Ted had threatened her and she just dismissed her. Like that shit happened to me when I was a kid. (My stepfather hit me. My mother didn't believe me. It only happened once but I still remember it crystal clear like 25+ years later.) I don't care if Buffy is the slayer, that shit is traumatising.

This is the kind of thing that makes parents feel unsafe for their kids to go to when they're hurt or in trouble. Combined with the psych ward stay, it's no fucking wonder Buffy doesn't trust her mother with the knowledge that she's the slayer until she absolutely has to.

Because they couldn't write their way out of said corner without calling into question everything about the protagonist of their spinoff. If vampires are capable of meaningful change without souls, then Angel/bangel immediately looks worse by comparison because Angel wouldn't (not couldn't; wouldn't) change for Buffy without one, and he's supposed to be her "true love".

Therefore Spike must still be an evil thing, no matter how much humanity we've seen him display without a soul. They can't show Buffy being openly in love with a soulless creature, because soulless = bad. So they push the character into a corner and make him lash out, just so they can point the finger and say "See? We told you!"

it is crazy how at the end of season 5 spike tells buffy how much it means to him that she treats him like a man instead of a monster and then in season 6 she stops treating him like a man and insists that he's a monster
