Spanish for fun! is the leading choice for parents seeking a safe, fun and educational language-immersion preschool for their young children. Studies show that learning two languages at the same time is beneficial for children, which explains why those enrolled in our program experience critical cognitive and social gains. We employ a play-based teaching method that mirrors the way children naturally learn. This makes it easy for them to pick up Spanish as a second language.Spanish for fun! Sff! Celebrates Week of the Young Child
Last week was “Week of the Young Child,” a special week started by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) to celebrate early learning, young children, their teachers, and families.
Sff! wanted to celebrate our children in a different way this year, so we invited Joy the Clown to give our twos, threes, and fours classes a show. Along with bunnies and doves, Joy taught the children about the Golden rule: Respect others as you would like to be respected and treated by others. Respect your parents, respect your teachers, and respect the elderly. We are so grateful for the joy and happiness she brought to our children. Thank you Joy, the show was fantastic!
Sff! is honored to have an in-house, talented Zumba instructor on staff. Ms. Monica Andrade, who does Zumba as a hobby, was happy to offer Zumba classes for our children. They had so much fun with her! We would like to give Ms. Monica a BIG, BIG thank you for doing this with our children. Being active with the children helps them learn more about being healthy and makes learning easier.
Here are some other fun activities we did to celebrate the Week of the Young Child:
Sff! Wake Forest enjoyed the Father/Daughter and Mother/Son Dance event, and had a fun competition for our 2 year olds. Our children also enjoyed a performance from our Director, who sang while one of our lovely moms played the piano. It was great to have live music! Special thanks to Mrs. Sandra Potter and Mrs. Lucelia Rodriguez for finding unique ways to make our children feel special.
Sff! Cary teachers prepared a beautiful party for their children where they danced and ate ice cream. Our little ones had a bubble party and puppet show prepared by the teachers. Thanks to our Cary Team for planning such a fun party for our children. We also invited to Ms. Valeria Ronceros, who came and played some music. Thanks Valeria for the great performances!
In Sff! Duraleigh, our babies enjoyed story time and a puppet show at the playground.  They also played with the hula-hula and bubbles. Additionally, we had a special guest that came with a ukulele to play live music for our children and teachers. They danced, touched the instrument, and enjoyed this great moment! We would like to thank Ms. Valeria Ronceros for sharing her talent with our little ones in Duraleigh.
Sff! Raleigh enjoyed a delicious picnic and had story time at the playground. Each teacher celebrated our children with different activities per classroom. Thank you very much to our wonderful Raleigh staff for making everyone feel special.
We love special celebrations at Spanish for fun! Our teachers, parents and children had a great week-long celebration!

A Guideline For Choosing the Best Preschool For Your Child
As you search for the best preschool for your child, you’re almost certain to come across several that you feel would work. It’s easy to get overwhelmed because there’s so much to think through. Plus, all of your top choices will have genuinely good things to offer. This post will help you establish the criteria necessary to make the right decision.
One major point to consider is accreditation. Go through your list of preschools and make sure they have received accreditation from a recognized credentialing agency. The following post addresses why it matters:
Why Preschool Accreditation Is So Important
When you are looking for preschool for your little one to attend, you may see that some say they are accredited, some may say they are licensed, some may be both and still others may have neither. What is preschool accreditation and why is it important? Preschool accreditation is a voluntary process that is designed to improve the quality of preschool programs. A preschool that is accredited is guaranteed to offer its students a high level of care in a cheerful, academic environment. Read more at Very Well Family…
Accreditation is an easy way to determine whether key standards have been met by the preschools you’re considering. If any of them aren’t accredited, remove them from your list.
Another thing you should look at is the method of learning your child will be exposed to. Avoid any preschool where the program seems to be an adult curriculum offered in a baby version. Children’s learning styles are distinct from adults’. A good preschool’s teaching process will reflect this fact. Get more details here:
What Does “High Quality” Mean?
No two preschools look or feel exactly the same. But all high-quality programs have some things in common.
Teachers in high-quality programs build on what your child already knows and can do. They provide materials and experiences that are challenging, but that children can do with a little help. This is called developmentally appropriate practice (DAP). Developmentally appropriate practice means
Teaching based on each child’s age and stage of development
Helping each child meet goals that are just right for that child
Valuing and including each child’s family, language, and culture. Read more at NAEYC…
Give special consideration to programs that develop your child holistically — addressing both their cognitive and social growth.
Weigh any extra benefits your child will reap from their preschool experience. In addition to gaining basic skills, determine if there are long-term advantages to attending one daycare over another. An outstanding example of this is described in the following post:
What Is Bilingual Preschool & Should You Consider It for Your Child?
In a bilingual preschool, instructors conduct activities in a second language either mixed with the first language or as complete immersion throughout the whole school day. The goal is to expose young learners to a new language they can become proficient in and use later in life.
There are different types of bilingual programs depending on the amount of time devoted to the second language in the classroom:
Complete or 100% immersion means the program is held 100% in the second language
Partial immersion programs are conducted in the foreign language about 50% of the time
Two-way immersion, also called bilingual immersion, combines language minority and language majority students in the same classroom. Instruction is in both languages and idea is to get both types of speakers proficient in both languages. Read more at Wonderschool…
These are just some of the qualities you’ll find in an outstanding bilingual preschool. If you’re interested in locating a daycare with these excellent advantages, There’s good news below.
Spanish for fun! Wake Forest is an accredited, Spanish immersion preschool designed with your child’s development in mind. Our students learn, share and discover through age-appropriate, play-based activities that make the educational experience natural and fun.

Spoiling Our Team with a Trip to Asheville
At Spanish for fun!, we truly care about each and every one of our employees and want to make sure they are not only successful but happy. That’s why we make it a point to take them on retreats. Our work trips allow the team to bond, re-energize, and spark creativity.
A couple of months ago, we took our admin-directors to Asheville to do just that! We worked a little, we played a little, we explored, and we bonded as a team. We love to spoil our team!
The adventure started with a lunch on Friday afternoon.
After lunch we had a working session and then Rob cooked the team a delicious dinner!
On Saturday, we worked on overcoming fears by ziplining through the mountains! From one mountain to many others, we spent 3+ hours in the trees.
We had so much fun exploring the beautiful city of Asheville.
On Saturday night, we had fun as a team figuring out the breakout room!
On Sunday morning, we worked, went for a hike, and reached the sky!
Before we headed back to Raleigh, Rob treated us on his food truck, Out of the Blue Peruvian Fusion Cuisine.
We had so much fun with the team and love our unique trips! Here are some words from our admin-directors.
Karina
“This adventure allowed us to share with the founders and mentors we work with. We came to know each other in a different way, having a lot of fun in the beautiful city of Ashville with the colorful trees around us.
I would name this trip as freedom, happiness, and challenge!
The whole trip was spectacular! I loved being spoiled by Rob with delicious breakfasts, being welcomed in their home, and sharing with Gabi the zipline, tour of Asheville, food, music, flavors and fun together as the family we are!”
From Monica
“My trip to Asheville was a great experience, I really enjoyed our bonding time. I felt part of the team, a great, strong and fun team 🙂
I enjoyed the delicious food, and overall the experience of being with our admin staff in a non-working environment, getting to know each one of them better.
Great company, great hosts, great time. Thanks Rob, Gabi and team.”
From Lucelia
“Our trip to Asheville was super fun and inspirational. We had a great time together getting to know each other better, and spending time together in a place that has outstanding nature and landscaping.
My favorite part of the trip was definitely the ziplining. I was super afraid of doing it and my adrenaline was super high, but once I had the courage to go, and fly between the mountains, watching those spectacular autumn views, it felt amazing.
We came back with a renewed energy, feeling stronger and happier. Can’t wait for our next one.”
From Veronica
“My favorite part of the trip was the time I spent with my coworkers while we were on our way to Ashville and the time during our activity. I loved our Zipline activity and seeing the team that we have so united, and how we encouraged each other to do each one of the ziplines. Some of us overcame the fear of heights or for some, it was our first time. Thanks to Ms. Gabi and Rob for opening the doors of their home and for the delicious dinner and breakfast they gave us.
It was a great experience.”
From Valeria
“I loved being in contact with nature, the extreme activities, beautiful landscape, and reinforcing team bonds as well as team skills.”
From Ingrid
“I loved sharing experiences with my peers, and growing stronger relationships with them. It was definitely a unique weekend! I enjoyed Rob and Gabi’s warm hospitality and most of all I loved to get to know their loved Asheville.
It was cathartic for me to overcome my fear of heights. I was able to truly enjoy the zipline!!! Going up to the mountains, the incredible views, and daring myself each time I was on the zipline was a great experience!!
During the trip, new ideas came to me, and I came back refreshed, and with a strong feeling to make positive changes in my school. This is an experience that I hope happens again!!”

The Numerous Benefits of Early Childhood Education
The moment your child is born, he or she starts learning and developing cognitively, physically, socially, emotionally, and linguistically. As your child grows, their brain acts like a sponge for knowledge — learning from you and from their environment.
While all children will learn and develop quickly during these formative years, there are a lot of benefits to attending a preschool that specializes in early childhood education. Here are just some of the advantages your child will receive from the right preschool.
Social Skills
Being around other children in a safe and educational environment helps children develop social skills. Preschool allows them to engage both with other children and with adults, which is crucial to the development of social skills like listening, expressing ideas, sharing, making friends and being accountable for actions.
Autonomy
Allowing your little one to learn, discover and explore outside of your home and care, helps them develop autonomy. Learning how to be independent at an early age will help them later in life when independence is crucial. Allowing your child to explore on their own helps them develop a sense of self, and understand how their choices and actions affect outcomes.
Language Acquisition
Kids don’t come out of the womb speaking your language. They learn from you and from their environment. Preschool helps nurture language development and communication skills as they learn from and practice with teachers and classmates.
In addition to learning English, the preschool years are the perfect time for children to acquire a second language. Enrolling your child in a language immersion preschool (like Spanish for fun!) will help them on the road to bilingualism. And as you probably know, there are many benefits to being bilingual.
Some of these benefits include:
Enhanced cognitive ability
Faster learning
Empathy and appreciation of other cultures
Better multitasking abilities
Increased attention span
Better memory
Increased concentration
Attention Span
A quality preschool has lots of activities that help develop your child’s attention span. Children learn concentration, they develop their listening skills and they learn how to follow directions, all through discovery and fun.
Exposure to Diversity
We live in a world rich with diversity. The earlier you expose your child to diverse cultures, thoughts and traditions, the better. Children who learn about diversity at an early age grow up to be more empathetic and understanding of others. They also learn to appreciate and understand that everyone is unique and different.
  Better Performance in Grade School
Finally, early education (especially bilingual education) has been proven to help increase performance in grade school. This is because a quality preschool builds the right foundation for learning with regard to your child’s physical, mental, emotional and social development — all things that prepare them for a lifetime.
As a parent, you will be happy to know that you don’t have take our word for it when it comes to the validity of our claims. We have the feedback of a wide array of parents who have sent their children to Spanish for fun!, as well as the support of educators who see our results first-hand in their classrooms.
Here are two examples of the personal comments, phone calls, emails and letters we receive regularly about our school and teaching methods:
From a Happy Parent:
“We feel so fortunate a friend told us about Spanish for fun!. Not only do I feel my children are learning in a safe, diverse, unique environment, but also that they are absolutely adored by the staff. Picking up the children after a long day and still seeing the staff with big smiles and hugs for the everyone is wonderful. I love hearing my children’s language skills progress in both English and Spanish; and the weekly teaching plans seem fun and engaging. We feel lucky to be a part of the Spanish for fun! family!” – Blair
From a Kindergarten Teacher at Wake County Public School:
“Sff! kids are very well prepared to go to any public or private school. The teachers there do a wonderful job instructing them with the basic skills on how to start dealing with their daily lives and growing environment. They come to school with a great vocabulary, with a great ability to follow a conversation in Spanish, and knowing the letters of the alphabet. They get so excited when they hear the songs they already learned in Sff. They also come to school knowing a lot of games from Hispanic cultures. I believe Sff! is an amazing daycare because teachers there prepare students to be well-balanced individuals, capable of dealing with life’s challenges. It is a daycare that not only teaches Spanish; it goes beyond. They teach children to be open minded to a world of different cultures.” — Monica

Proper Childcare Will Enhance Your Child’s Development
One of the most important decisions you can make as a parent concerns the care your little one receives in your absence. A preschool offers your child a good foundation where he or she can socialize with other children and learn in a safe environment. Your child gets to have both structured and unstructured time for learning, as well as playing and getting creative.
The programs offered in a good childcare facility will be tailored to meet the developmental needs of your child depending on his or her age. The following post touches on the benefits of quality childcare:
Good grades: A study on the benefits and costs of investing in early childhood education by Robert Lynch and Kavya Vaghul says that “Empirical research shows children who participate in high-quality pre-kindergarten programs score higher on tests when they enter kindergarten than do children who have not attended a high-quality pre-kindergarten.”
Low failure percentages: Children from low to middle class families who attend good pre-schools require less special education, and are less likely to fail and repeat a class.
Fewer instances of abuse: Research also shows that children who attend good quality pre-schools are less likely to be victims of child abuse or engage in crimes as teens and adults. Read more at Femina…
A good childcare program introduces your child to the basics of science, math and social studies. In addition, she will be introduced to communication skills and may learn different languages. There are various benefits associated with learning a foreign language at a young age.
When your child begins to learn a second or third language, she tends to become better in learning, thinking and socializing with others. Exposing your child to a foreign language also enhances brain development. The following post explains more on this:
The Benefits
As a person begins to learn a new language, new neural pathways are created within the brain. A study done at the Swedish Armed Forces Interpreter Academy showed that recruits who began intensively studying a second language had increased the size of their hippocampus and three areas in the cerebral cortex, which was shown through MRI brain scans. Activation and growth of the hippocampus helps a person to create a better memory and memorization skills.
Dr. Viorica Morian has also found that learning another language helps a person to become a better listener, because it requires your brain to discern between two sets of very distinctive sounds and to accurately identify those speech sounds. It also helps a person to have better focus, attention and concentration. Read more at The Mind Unleashed…
Learning a foreign language helps your child to master his native language since he has a growing understanding of how language works. At a young age, your child can internalize a second language quickly and speak it fluently without too much effort.
Exposing your child to a second language will also give him an appreciation for other cultures. The second language will open him up to more people, resources and places. The following post talks about the benefits of learning Spanish at a young age:
Learn The Benefits of Introducing Preschool Spanish Lessons
Preschool is the best time to introduce a second language for students not already living in a bilingual household. The benefits of preschool Spanish lessons have been well documented, and research shows that the earlier you start a child on learning a second language, the better off they will be.
Many countries require that schools introduce a Spanish curriculum for students by the time the students are eight years old. In the United States, however, a second language is not required until high school. This limits their time to learn to four years maximum, as opposed to 10 or even 12 years. Read more at Reference Video…
Your child stands to benefit greatly from early exposure to a second language. If you are looking for a childcare center in Wake Forest that offers Spanish lessons for children, then Spanish for fun is the best option for your child. SFF is a daycare and kindergarten with a Spanish immersion program. Your child will learn the Spanish language and culture in a fun and creative way, and enjoy the benefits of bilingualism too!
If you are searching for a preschool that will offer your child a safe, loving environment and an educational jumpstart, Spanish for fun! is your best option. Get in touch with us today to schedule a tour of our Wake Forest campus. Call 919-883-2061 or complete the form on our website. We look forward to showing you why your child will thrive with us.

How To Help Your Child Develop Amazing Social Skills
Parenting is an amazing journey — one that will invariably lead you to discover as much about yourself as your child. One of the things you realize along the way is that you didn’t just turn out the way you are. Someone guided you, instilled their values in you, taught you how to navigate the world. In the same manner, you’re now leading your child to become the person you want them to be. Admirable character traits and social skills are taught and then reinforced through repetition and imitation. This post will give you the skills you need to help ensure your child’s social success.
A good place to start is learning some key facts and dispelling some surprising myths about social development in children. The following post has details:
Preschool social skills: Evidence-based tips for helping children succeed
Preschool social skills depend on several abilities:
self-control
empathy
verbal communication
Many people assume that children need to spend lots of time with same-aged peers to develop social skills.
They don’t.
Play-dates and preschool attendance can enrich your child’s life. But socialization — the process of learning how to get along with others — is not the same thing as socializing. Spending the day with same-aged peers is not necessarily a good way for young children to learn about cooperation, sharing, and emotional self-control. Read more at Parenting Science…
Your relationship with your child will set the tone for how he or she interacts with others. Here are some excellent suggestions to help you prepare your child for navigating the world:
Raise a Socially Skilled Child
Watching kids squabble over a toy is distressing, and so is seeing a group of little ones exclude a potential playmate. Socially confident kids can navigate these tricky situations. They know how to make friends, “play nice,” and strike up conversations with peers and adults.
Social Confidence Skill #1: Knowing How to Say, “Can I Play?”
It’s not easy for a child to approach another kid who is already playing and ask to join in. After all, the answer could easily be “No.” That fear of rejection could stop a child from even trying, and then she misses out on the fun (and the learning that comes with playing with others). Read more at Highlights…
One major challenge to advancing good social skills is the fact that nowadays a significant portion of adults lack appropriate social skills. Obviously this creates a bigger challenge for teaching the next generation. The good news is there’s a fun solution to this dilemma that children will enjoy:
‘Q’s Race To The Top’ Is A Board Game That Helps Teach Kids Social Skills
Considering most adults can’t carry on a conversation in the same room these days without a smartphone, the odds of your toddler developing strong social skills are growing slimmer by the hour. Let’s just say when it comes to teaching good manners, the importance of sharing, and why making eye contact with the cashier at Target is totally normal, you have your work cut out for you. For some help, there’s a new game that teaches emotional intelligence (EQ) called Q’s Race To The Top.
Long and short, Q is a genius monkey who lacks social skills, and it’s up to your kids to help him reach his treehouse by answering 3 types of question/action cards… Read more at Fatherly…
The natural, most effective way for children learn is through play. Teaching social skills through guided play will have a greater effect than talking about it. This process should begin at home and be reinforced at your child’s preschool.
Spanish for fun! is an accredited preschool and daycare with an original curriculum that teaches the Spanish language and culture through immersion and lots of fun. Our play-based style of teaching will promote your child’s cognitive and social development.
We encourage you to visit our website to learn more about our different programs and curriculum. Then, call us at 919-883-2061 to schedule a tour of our Wake Forest Campus. We want you to see firsthand why we are the best preschool choice for your child.

How To Recognize And Nurture Your Child’s Talents
Every child has a talent, a specialized activity that he or she can do excellently without much effort. Talents are diverse and are expressed in different ways. One child may be an excellent artist who loves to paint, another may be interested in music, while yet another may be good at crafts. These are all different expressions of artistic talents. Children may also be talented in sports, academics, and even social skills. Talents are pretty much limitless in their range.
As a parent, one of the best things you can do for your child is recognize their special abilities and encourage their development. Reading the following post is a good place to begin the process:
Understanding Giftedness and Talent
What is known about giftedness and talent?
Giftedness is identifiable in very young children.
Early identification is essential for the long-term wellbeing of the gifted child.
Giftedness is present equally in boys and girls and children from all socio-economic and cultural backgrounds.
Giftedness is not rare – it is estimated 10–15 per cent of the population is gifted.
Gifted children can also have learning difficulties and disabilities.
Definitions of ‘gifted’ and ‘talent’
There are many different definitions of giftedness and talent. The information below is based on Françoys Gagné’s definition and model of giftedness and talent.  Gagné’s model requires professionals working with young gifted children to consider their role in the developmental process that leads from potential to talented performance. Read more at Victoria State Government…
There is a great deal of potential in your child that should be encouraged and cultivated. Feeling special about their talents is a way for children to experience self-love and develop high self-esteem.
Okay, we’ve established that having a talent is great — but what if you aren’t sure what your child’s talent is? The following post will help you discover and encourage your child’s natural gift:
6 Ways to Spot and Nurture Your Child’s Talents
Dancing was my daughter’s thing.
Twirling around in her purple tutu she would dance to just about anything.
Steve Songs, The Sound of Music Soundtrack, and Bach – were all dance-worthy tunes that would inspire her to leap and jump and spin around our living room – sometimes for hours on end.
I loved seeing my daughter explore this interest. She was passionate about dancing and it took no effort to focus her attention and energy on it.
Like most parents, early on I was on the look out for my daughter’s passion – something that she would explore to no end and would fill her with purpose and pride.
Dance appeared to be it. (or so I thought…) Read more at Self Sufficient Kids…
Providing strategic opportunities for your child to use their gifts will play a key role in promoting their development. Here are more ways you can foster your child’s natural abilities:
Looking To Nurture Your Child’s Talent? Do It With These
When you discover that your child has a particular talent, it can be both exciting and emotional. Not only are you pleased that your son or daughter has a passion for something that they’re really good at, but you’re also keen to encourage them and see where it takes them too. Nurturing your child’s talent doesn’t have to be a difficult, expensive or energy-zapping process. Instead, it can be rewarding and fun!
If you’ve been wondering just how you can nurture and grow your child’s talent, hopefully, these ideas will help. You might need to invest a little time or money, but when it comes to your kids’ future, that’s a small price to pay. Read more at Your Organic Child…
Another key way for parents to support the development of their children’s talents is to enroll them in a preschool that understands the importance of nurturing these gifts. If you’re in Wake Forest, that means looking into Spanish for fun!

The Sff! Family Learns to Unleash Their Power
It’s important to us here at Sff! that we offer our teachers and administrators opportunities to develop their careers. Over the Summer we sent a group of Spanish for fun! directors to New York for the Tony Robbins Unleash the Power Within event.
Unleash the Power Within is a live 3 ½ day event with Tony Robbins designed to “help you unlock and unleash the forces inside that can help you break through any limit and create the quality of life you desire.”
Here’s what our administrators took away from the experience.
Karina Martínez: Regional Manager
“Unleash the Power” was a unique experienced. When I first heard about it, I didn’t know what to expect but was very excited. I thought the opportunity to create experiences with my team made me feel confident that this was going to be a great experience in my professional and personal life.
Tony Robbins has triggered my motivation and desire to achieve my dreams with no limits. It’s important that we work within ourselves first in order to improve our leadership. Only then will we be able to impact others.
I received a lot of great tools that I’m already using. Most of them are very simple and related to the energy level needed to create change. Breathing exercises, drinking water, and training your brain are some examples.
Professionally, I want to keep growing to make big things happening. I am thankful and appreciated by Sff!, because they have given me beautiful opportunities, and I know they care about their employees. I want to say YES, YES, YES!!!! to Sff! dreams and goals. We are doing it!
Elizabeth Peñalva: Program Coordinator
This event was a unique personal and professional experience. I learned to analyze myself to understand my fears, recognize my achievements, and be grateful for everything I have. I learned more about myself and learned to value myself more.
This is the starting point for making strong and consistent decisions. To be a leader and motivate teachers to be committed, creative, determined and leaders without fear of change.
As a team, we want Sff! to growth. We have many dreams and today we are working for the present so that these dreams become true. Let’s do it! Let’s say yes!
“For changes to be of any true value, they’ve got to be lasting and consistent.” –  Tony Robbins.
Cynthia De Amat: Cary Director
The Tony Robbins seminars have been such a great experience, personally and professionally. During those 4 days, I learned that I am the only one responsible for success in life. I learned that my vision and energy is very important. My words are important. And that these things will determine if I’ll succeed or fail on any task I go for.
I enjoyed spending time with my co-workers. I feel we were able to learn more about each other, and to build a great relationship as a team. I felt empowered that together we were able to accomplish any goal we desire.
I see my job as a daily opportunity to accomplish little goals, help others take away their limiting beliefs, and empower people to fulfill their dreams and reach their goals. I am here to motivate others. I thank Sff! for the opportunity.
Valeria Hernández: Glenwood Director
At the start of each day there were crew members that lined up throughout the center leading up to the hall waiting to give you high fives and get energy up. I was shy at first by I learned that energy is vital to “Unleash the Power” within experience.
The first thing Tony covers is that we have conditioned the negativity within ourselves. It’s not really us. When we say “I am depressed” or “I can’t do that because I’m too young” it is just a pattern of behavior that we have conditioned ourselves to believe.
Fear is the first thing that stops us. It comes down to not feeling like we are not enough or like we won’t be loved. After 11 hours of building us up and learning to “make our move” and shout “yes,” we ended the night with the Fire walk Experience, walking across a bed of burning hot coals. The Firewalk is a metaphor for overcoming fear in your life, which is the only thing that stops us.
It was such a great experience that helped me personally and professionally. I learned to show my team the importance of changing our mood or state into positive energy and to have better communication with my family and staff.
All in all, our directors had a great time in New York City. They learned to “unleash their power” and they connected as a team.

Our Top Tips For Dealing With A Passive Aggressive Child
Psychology has helped us gain an amazing awareness of what goes through people’s minds when faced with various situations and settings. These insights include the thought patterns and responses of children. Let’s take a closer look at one common response exhibited children when they are upset: Passive aggressiveness. You might be surprised to discover that you’ve been dealing with this issue in your own children. If you have, we’re going to help you tackle it.
First things first: what is passive aggressive behavior? The following post describes this in detail, so that you can identify it in any child:
What is “passive psychological aggression”?
Passive psychological aggression is a means of protecting an individual’s vulnerable or unconscious emotional lives through non direct emotional, verbal, or mental means.
Passive aggressive behavior can be blatantly obvious at times, although it’s commonly expressed in a more subtle manner. This can include:
Avoiding direct communication
Procrastination
Making excuses
Non-responsiveness
Performing jobs poorly on purpose
Playing the “victim”
Placing the blame on others
Sarcasm
Backhanded compliments
Silence  Read more at Louis Laves…
Whenever you notice your child refuses to communicate directly with you, especially when you expect him to be angry, it could be a passive aggressive expression of anger.
Have you ever wondered why your child does this instead of just saying that he isn’t happy? Well, as the following post explains, it is a “safe” way of expressing his emotions:
Child’s Play: Why Passive Aggression Works So Well for Children
Lest you think that passive aggressive behavior is only for the experienced antagonizer, it should be noted that younger children are perfectly capable of using compliant defiance. Like their older counterparts who gather that passive aggression can be more satisfying (and often less likely to result in punishment or immediate confrontation) than overt aggression, even preschool-aged children catch on to the fact that a tantrum in the candy aisle will result in being whisked out of a store, but pretending not to hear Mommy say “Look but don’t touch” can easily result in an “accidentally” unwrapped candy bar and subsequent chocolate purchase! Read more at Psychology Today…
In short, passive aggressive behavior is used to get one’s way through manipulation. If not, it can be used to pay back for what the person wasn’t freely given. This behavior should be dealt with quickly, before it escalates into emotional immaturity.
So, is your child passive aggressive? What do you think you can do about it? Here are some tips on how to handle the issue:
How to Manage Passive-Aggressive Behavior in Children
A passive-aggressive child attempts to gain power over their parents by ignoring demands, questions and responsibilities. According to Empowering Parents, passive aggressive children don’t know how to communicate when they are feeling angry or anxious, and instead of acting out they become resistant and closed off emotionally. If you have a passive-aggressive child you might find yourself chasing them all over the house, constantly reminding them of their chores and homework and inevitably helping them complete their responsibilities.
Step 1
Stay calm and remain in control of your emotions. It can be easy to get into an argument with your child when they are being passive aggressive, giving excuses or becoming upset. Remember that your child’s behavior is their coping mechanism and when you remain firm and in control you will help to deescalate the situation. Read more at Livestrong…
It is important to handle your child’s needs appropriately, whatever those needs are. This way, the correction you instill, for instance, will be consistent. This is also why you should enroll your child in a preschool that is aware of his or her needs.
If you are looking for a preschool that understands children’s needs and is willing and ready to walk with you and your child through his or her development, welcome to Spanish For Fun. In addition, your child’s early education will be delivered effectively in a healthy environment. Here is an excerpt of our philosophy:
At Spanish for fun! we utilize a combination of Spanish immersion curriculum, international curriculum and the early education creative curriculum of North Carolina. This has been developed around a play-based philosophy as well as paying close attention to each child’s social emotional state by exposing them to all 5 love languages (based off of the research done by Dr. Gary Chapman). A play based philosophy means we believe that children naturally engage in and enjoy play as a way of learning on their own terms and at their own pace.
Spanish for fun! was recently named the Member of the Month for October by the Wake Forest Chamber of Commerce. Call us at 919-881-1160 or complete the contact form on the website to schedule a tour of our Wake Forest Campus. We look forward to meeting you.

Spanish for fun! Spotlighted By Wake Forest Chamber of Commerce
Spanish for fun! is the Wake Forest Chamber of Commerce’s Member of the Month for October!
At Spanish for fun! our program is a unique mix of Spanish language immersion, cultural appreciation and the creative curriculum of North Carolina. This blend is developed around a play-based educational method. We also focus on the social and emotional development of children by exposing them to all five love languages. As defined by the research of Dr. Gary Chapman, they are: Acts of Service, Gift Giving, Physical Touch, Quality Time, and Words of Affirmation.
A play-based approach works with the natural inclination of children to use play as a means of learning on their own terms and at their own pace. Our job as teachers is to provide a safe and nurturing environment, guide them with developmentally appropriate activities, and create opportunities for them to explore and learn through play.
We provide a supportive atmosphere that encourages each child to develop physically, socially, emotionally, and cognitively. Our curriculum is taught entirely in Spanish, in a way that is fun and natural. Our students are not only exposed to the Spanish language but Latin culture in general. This inspires them to explore the world as it exists beyond their own upbringing.
The Benefits of Learning a Second Language
Studies show that bilingual children reason faster than monolingual children. They are more creative, flexible and open-minded in their thinking and they possess a greater capacity for problem solving.
Amazingly, research reveals that bilingual people actually have more gray matter because the brain undergoes structural changes from learning a new language. The magnitude of the transformation is limited by age — if the new language is acquired before the age of five, the changes are more significant. It’s interesting to note that children can learn up to five languages at the same time from birth.
Colleges and universities require foreign language education for admission. By the same token, learning another language helps to improve SAT scores. Studies show that for every year an individual studies a foreign language, their SAT scores improve.
Knowing a foreign language increases travel opportunities and allows the speaker to have more authentic interactions with the people they meet along the way.
Why It’s Wise To Learn Spanish in Particular
North Carolina has one of the fastest growing Hispanic populations in the U.S. Despite this trend, bilingual education has failed to become a priority for the educational system. Even foreign language education, which is ranked as highly as other basic academic fields by the National Commission of Excellence in Education, lacks strong and consistent support by state education leaders.
This is shortsighted because Spanish is the second-most spoken language globally, with 392 million Spanish speaking people in 22 countries around the world. Spanish is the second-most studied language after English, with more than 14 million students learning in 90 countries where it is not an official language.
The U.S. is the third-largest Spanish speaking country in the world. By the time today’s children are adults in 2050, an estimated 25 percent of the American population will be Latino.
According to the latest research, each year 200,000 Americans lose job opportunities because they do not know another language. This won’t be a roadblock to success for children who attend Spanish for fun!
If you want your child to have the developmental advantages and educational benefits that come from learning a second language, Spanish for fun! is your best option. Get in touch with us today to schedule a tour of our Wake Forest campus. Call 919-883-2061 or complete the form on the website and we’ll get back with you. We look forward to showing you why your child will thrive with us.

Technology And Its Impact On Your Child – The Right Approach
We live in a technologically-advanced age, and to be ignorant of the realities and implications of this is simply unwise. A lot has been written about the pros and cons of technology, but these discussions are often aimed at adults. In this blog post, we’ll take a closer look at how technology affects younger children. This will help you ensure that the benefits of technology are maximized for your child while the negative effects are limited.
A good place to start is getting a proper understanding of the impact of technology on your child’s development. The following post examines this in detail:
How much does technology affect our children’s development?
As we live in a world where technology is thriving, our children are having to embrace it as they grow up. But as a parent myself and an advocate of using technology to our advantage, I wanted to better understand what level of impact technology is having on our children’s development or better yet how much technology affects children’s development?
It was a different world in the 90s
There is little doubt that we live in a very different world from when I was a child growing up. I remember Christmas in 1990 when I was 6 years old watching TV on a rather antiquated and unintelligent box, or a film using a bulky VHS tape player whilst my Dad recorded the family video with a 90’s Panasonic video recorder. We all used to sit around and talk to each other or play board games that required imagination and social interaction. Read more at Eleven…
While you can’t control all the negative effects of technology on your child, you can take an active role in ensuring that a healthy balance is achieved when using it in its various forms.
An interesting recent discovery shows the importance of traditional learning methods, such as learning or reading, vis-à-vis technology. The following post describes how the two compare:
Reading to children ‘more effective than technology at boosting science skills’
Parents must put down the electronic tablets and start reading to their children if they want them to be successful in the world of tech and science.
Reading books to children has a far more profound effect on learning than letting them play with electronic tablets, according to Dr Shane Bergin, physicist, lecturer and researcher in science education at University College Dublin (UCD).
He said many parents made the mistake of assuming that just because a child had a tablet, they were learning about tech, or even playing with educational apps. And children are growing up in an environment where older family members are regularly glued to technology. Read more at Independent…
Scientific skills cannot be acquired by prolonged hours of looking at even technical programs. There is an aspect of apprenticeship that is lost to screen addicts. One has to actually learn by doing.
However, there are educational resources that can be accessed through the use of the internet and other gadgets and they should not be discarded. The following post gives insight on the type of tech use that needs to be regulated:
We Were Wrong About Limiting Children’s Screen Time
How much time should kids be allowed to stare into their screens like zombies? New guidelines issued by the American Academy of Pediatrics upturns conventional thinking on the matter, showing that a sweeping one-size-fits-all approach is not the right way for parents to go about limiting their children’s screen time.
For years, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has told parents to limit their child’s screen time to no more than two hours per day, whether that time is spent in front of a television, tablet computer, laptop, or mobile phone. What’s more, the AAP made virtually no mention of age, or the kind of content that should be limited, issuing a simplified blanket approach to media use.
In a series of papers published today in the science journal Pediatrics, it’s clear that the AAP has significantly revised its thinking on the matter, breaking down media use according to all these criteria. And to support parents with these new recommendations, the AAP has published an interactive, online tool that families can use to create a personalized Family Media Use Plan. Read more at Gizmodo…
As you create your personalized plan for media use, it is important to occupy the rest of your child’s time with meaningful activities. You could even allow them to get bored sometimes, as it helps them get creative with their free time.
One way of doing this is ensuring that you enroll your child in a preschool that will harness all of your child’s abilities. At Spanish For Fun, we do exactly that. We have a holistic program that is designed to grow your child intellectually, socially, physically and even emotionally.
If you are searching for a preschool that will offer your child an educational jumpstart, Spanish for fun! is your best option. Get in touch with us today to schedule a tour of our Wake Forest campus. Call 919-883-2061 or complete the form on our website. We look forward to showing you why your child will thrive with us.

Bedtime: Safeguarding Your Child’s Sleep For Health And Growth
Like all human beings, children need an appropriate amount and quality of sleep to ensure that the body and mind can rejuvenate and prepare for the next day. Getting the proper sleep allows the brain to work at peak efficiency, since it is during sleep that the brain is “cleaned up.” This daily housekeeping optimizes the speed of learning from day to day.
On the other hand, lack of sleep contributes to health problems, such as obesity. Setting a good sleeping pattern for your child will do them a great deal of good both now and in the future.
Some of the questions you may be pondering now are how many hours of sleep your child should get each day. And, does this amount only refer to uninterrupted sleep or is it the total number of hours, including nap times? The following post addresses these points and more:
Healthy Sleep Habits: How Many Hours Does Your Child Need?
From infants and toddlers to school-aged kids and teens, parents want to know how many hours of sleep are recommended. While it’s true that sleep needs vary from one person to another, there are some very reasonable, science-based guidelines to help you determine whether your child is getting the sleep he or she needs to grow, learn, and play.
Childhood Sleep Guidelines
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) provides some helpful guidelines regarding just how much sleep children need at different stages in their development. Keep in mind that these numbers reflect total sleep hours in a 24-hour period. So if your son or daughter still naps, you’ll need to take that into account when you add up his or her typical sleep hours. Read more at Healthy Children…
Different age groups have different sleep requirements, so you need to adjust your child’s sleeping routine as they grow. Eventually, they will learn to value the importance of a good night’s sleep based on your emphasis of this fact.
One of the ways you can instill the discipline of sleeping adequately is ensuring that your child goes to bed at a particular time each night. The following post describes how and why you should do this:
Importance of Early Bedtime for Babies and Children
My Experience with Early Bedtime
I am a huge believer in early bedtime. I will tell anyone and everyone that early bedtime is a magical thing. I’m usually met with a lot of skepticism from people when I tell them that my 3.5 yr old goes to bed at 6 pm every night. “Well, doesn’t he wake up at like 4 in the morning?” is a question I get asked a lot. I’m always thrilled to reply that no, actually he sleeps straight through until 6 or 6:30am. Again, I am met with skeptical glances.
It’s true though, ever since discovering the power of early bedtime completely by accident, my son is a better sleeper than he has ever been. It shows in his everyday behavior. He’s happy, well rested, attentive and more willing to listen to me when I talk, which is huge for a toddler. Read more at Good Night’s Sleep Site…
As noted, apart from guaranteeing the right amount of sleep, you also need to make sure that the quality of your child’s rest is good. There are several factors that can lead to difficulty in sleeping. Let’s take a look at some of them:
Pediatric sleep disorders
Arousal Disorders – Transitioning from deep sleep to partial wakefulness, children with an arousal disorder don’t simply wake up. They are in a very light sleep and show signs of confusion or disorientation. Behaviors range from simple, such as mumbling during sleep or sitting up for a moment, to complex, like sleep walking or inconsolable crying.
Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) – When the soft tissues in the throat relax during sleep, they can partially block the airway just enough to cause problems during sleep, resulting in obstructive sleep apnea.
Restless Legs Syndrome – A neurological disorder, restless legs syndrome involves urges to move legs, arms, or trunk during times of rest or inactivity. This makes it challenging to fall and stay asleep. Read more at Monbaby…
There are many things that can interrupt your child’s sleep. Anxiety about school can be a major sleep disrupter, which is why it’s critical that you enroll your child in a school they will love.
If your child is in preschool at Spanish for fun!, you can rest assured that he or she will look forward to each new day. Our unique Spanish immersion program will develop your child’s cognitive skills in a fun, play-based environment based on the latest standards for preschool education. This Is How You Can Boost Brain Development In Your Preschooler
There are several strategies you can use to promote the healthy development of your child. For instance, the top of the list for babies is diet, according to the experts. Specialists say that breast milk contributes significantly to brain development. The good news is that your options don’t end when your child starts to grow. You can expose them to activities and tasks that offer a further cognitive head start in life.
One thing you want to be keen about is music. There is magic in music that everyone naturally resonates with. To make it even better, music can improve your child’s brain development, as described in the following post:
If You Want To Accelerate Brain Development In Children, Teach Them Music
Music, the universal language of mood, emotion and desire, connects with us through a wide variety of neural systems.
We now know from controlled treatment/outcome studies that listening to and playing music is a potent treatment for mental health issues. 400 published scientific papers have proven the old adage that “music is medicine.” In fact, research demonstrates that adding music therapy to treatment improves symptoms and social functioning among schizophrenics. Further, music therapy has demonstrated efficacy as an independent treatment for reducing depression, anxiety and chronic pain.
Importantly, music education also appears to accelerate brain development in young children, particularly in the areas of the brain responsible for processing sound, language development, speech perception and reading skills, according to initial results of a five-year study by USC neuroscientists. Read more at wake-up world…
So you see: Fostering your child’s love of music can awaken her inner genius if she picks up an instrument at an early age.
In addition to the magical effects of music, the ability to speak more than one language is another gift you should consider giving your child. As a group, bilingual children boast greater intelligence in testing than monolingual youth, as explained in the following post:
Language and brain development: bilingualism is a good thing
One of the common myths that educators in the conseil scolaire francophone (francophone school district 93) hear is that learning two languages at once can hinder a child’s development.
This was the thinking back in the 1960s when several flawed studies seemed to indicate that bilingualism could be a handicap to a child. The thought at the time was that learning two languages simultaneously meant that the child was spending too much time and energy distinguishing between them both.
The popular logic now is that the effort required to switch between two languages may actually trigger more activity in the part of the brain that is responsible for executive function– specifically problem solving, switching between tasks, and the ability to focus while filtering out irrelevant information. Read more at Richmond News…
Make it your parental responsibility to expose your child to language learning. You will be surprised to see just how much potential he has.
Finally, there are other activities you can plan for your child to boost early brain development. The following post takes a closer look:
Activities To Promote Brain Development In Infants
Experts have pinpointed specific areas of cognitive development that are supportive of the interactions of infants with their environment through sensorimotor processes and their innate curiosity to find out how the world works.
Concepts learned in infancy
Following are some of the concepts that infants begin to learn early on in their lives.
Cause and effect
We know that infants learn about their environment and themselves through their five senses. They actively move so that they can touch, see, mouth, and hear what is going on around them. This helps them to understand the relationship of cause and effect. Read more at The Preschool Mentor…
To maximize your efforts, you want to ensure that the preschool you choose for your child understands and appreciates the importance of these strategies and more.
At Spanish for fun!, we are passionate about the holistic development of children. Our play-based immersion program is designed to teach your child Spanish in a way that is both fun and natural. Our staff is trained to handle every child according to their unique abilities and strengths.
