Triangles .1
An outsider’s world is sensation without context. Sights, sounds, textures, tastes, smells, stand on their own merits to the outsider, where the insider brings knowledge and expectations that temper the senses.
I was 8 when matzah-ball soup and schnitzel were the only two foods I’d accepted to eat the entire summer I lived in Romania – but to anyone else it’s just a good soup and breaded chicken. As an adult, each time I enjoy chicken soup or schnitzel, I enjoy them together with my memories, not in spite of them. Ned’s Storm is a story about an outsider who utterly lacks context for our planet, our lives. Instead, he sees the world plainly, as it lies, as he attempts to relate his own context and experiences to the world in which he finds himself. I want to interact with the earliest methods we used to capture and portray our world in image – Orthochromatic (or orthochrome simulation) imagery is only sensitive to blue and some green, giving skin tones and plants an unusual texture, and over-illuminating the sky.
I wish to immerse the viewer in this (un)familiarity, using 3d imaging and surround-sound. Possible additions to best envelop and isolate the viewer can include projection, sound-deadening, lighting effects. One idea that intrigues me most is a back-side projection above the viewer to somewhat encapsulate the field of view a-la visual Dolby Atmos.
I’ve picked up my large format camera, and at the time am organizing other equipment and trips for recordings and photography. I’ve so far completed one ambient space recording, and will keep adding to them as the semester moves forward.

Goals and Reflection
My goals are to explore the interaction between digital and analogue processes to create a blended live-action, still photograph, and stop-motion animated world. I’m very interested in using 3d processes and large-format photography. Surround-sound, compositing, and 3d are aspects that I have little-to-no legit experience working with, and I’m interested in experimenting with these worlds.
I’ve been slowly working on a story called “Space Alien Ned” where an extremely humanoid space alien lands on a long abandoned earth. Since the collapse of human life on earth, nature has reclaimed it’s old spaces. Plants return to homes, roads give way to rivers, certain lights still illuminate shattered, overgrown roads. The planet has become a wildlife sanctuary, as designated by inter-stellar law. Ted, who’s just landed his ship, is seeking The Planet’s most excellent sunsets. He must climb a mountain and hike from the designated ship-landing site to the mountain peak, where an empty cabin awaits him. Without human intervention, the world begins to appear more-and-more alien, but the earth and wildlife as we know it still lives on. I plan on using a mix of analogue photography, digital photography, video, stop motion/pixilation, and compositing. 3d analogue and digital imaging could be used to create a 3d video-art installation.
