The Bluebell Wood - Felix Dennis
We walked within an ancient wood Beside the Heart-of-England way Where oak and beech and hazel stood, Their leaves the pale shades of May.
By bole and bough, still black with rain, The sunlight filtered where it would Across a glowing, radiant stain— We stood within a bluebell wood!
And stood and stood, both lost for words, As all around the woodland rang And echoed with the cries of birds Who sang and sang and sang and sang…
My mind has marked that afternoon To hoard against life’s stone and sling; Should I go late, or I go soon, The bluebells glow— the birds still sing.

Bravo Clara Rockmore! :)
youtube
Clara Rockmore was born 105 years ago today (March 9, 1911). She was a theremin virtuoso. This video shows her playing the instrument and it appears as thought she is creating sounds out of mid air. The eerie sound of the instrument was used in some classic movies, including one of my favorites from my youth, the science fiction film, The Day The Earth Stood Still. It was used by Brian Jones on The Rolling Stones’ album Her Satanic Majesties Request and Jimmy Page also played in during Led Zeppelin concerts. Most notably, The Beach Boys played an electro-theremin on Good Vibrations. Robert Moog was also very impressed with the instrument and it influenced him to create the Moog synthesizer. Today’s Google Doodle allows you to “play” the theremin.

DIY Pilot wave hydrodynamics
Approximately two years ago, we wrote a series of posts covering Pilot wave hydrodynamics with Nicole Sharp from FYFD.  Since then we have always wanted to try this out at home and visualize the phenomenon
The gifs above are some of the interesting footage that was captured from our DIY pilot wave hydrodynamics setup.
You can find informal report on how you can get this to work from things you find at home here. If you have any questions feel free to send us a message and we would be happy to help you out.
Cheers!

Tree Listening Device invention was created by Alex Metcalf. Metcalf invention was featured in BBC’s My Passion For Tree by Dame Judi Dench. The Tree Listening Project is a genius way of getting listeners to interact with the living tree, magnifying the sounds the tree contain within the roots.

St James Park: I was having a walk in St James Park, taking in the greenery. The busy street nearby had many cars travelling back and forth. The vibrate autumn colours on the leaves caught my attention, with the branches reaching in ever direction like the nerves of our human lungs. I took these pictures to show the comparison from the Autumn tree falling on the left compared to the bare Winter on the right tree.

Entry 5 - Tuesday 29th October 2019: As part of a Research and Development project, we had exhibition site visits every fortnight to help us gain inspiration in our Sound Arts & Design degree and discover different ways of interpretation in Sound Art.
We visited Bernie Krause & United Visual Arts Collaborated audio installation at the Vinyl Factory, The Strand. Bioacoustician and field recording expert Bernie Krause’s installation provided a collective, dynamic audio sound clips of 5,000 hours of audio recordings of animals in habitats, also sourcing audio from 15,000 marine species.
Enter a dark black rectangular room, as the recordings begin to play- visual representation travel horizontally showing bright line/scatter graphics changing with the rhythm of the sound audio clips. These thumb snippets of sound audio mimimic the eco systems of various animal environments.

One of the sound technicians referred me to listen to field recordist and music composer Toshiya Tsunoda. The album ‘Wovenland’ by  Toshiya Tsunoda & Taki Unami on Erstwhile Records. (2018) The tracks are beautifully composed, with harmonious materialised tones and intricate environmental sounds that will prick up you auditory senses.
Track of Choice - Track 8: A Shorefront Of The Lake/Commercial Space.

In our final year, we are learning to explore methods that can be technically applied in Sound. Workshop opportunities organised by our Sound Technician in University. For example, they introduced us to learning how to convert computer data, raspberry pie into sound using software applications and other computer generated audio platforms.
In this workshop, we first were shown the foundation knowledge and how this D.I.Y appliance can bee used to create sound audio. The site link above by ZachPoff.com is nicely simplified, this site shows you instructions on how to create and build an Alex Rice Piezo Preamplifier. In the below picture is the schematic drawing of the perfboard layout of the microphone.
This is a small version on a perf board designed by Greg Perrin, showing the coordinates on the board. This is so, the designer can inset the electrical components in the correct pointers. I’m nearly completed my D.I.Y design, once all component parts have been attached and soldered on. The remaining external parts need be aligned. Then I will be able to carry out my sound tests, to check if it’s able to conduct sounds with contact with materials.

Entry 7 -17th October 2019: Field Recording Sound Tests: When I listen to nature as I’m recording the audio on field, theres many sound that infiltrate your ears. Recording environmental sounds requires much need attention and further more, some patience.
To start my sound composition process for my major Project, I wanted to record a external audio recording in an greener area, forested with Trees rooted beneath the ground.
I used the Zoom F4 Multitrack Field Recording with the Røde Shotgun Condenser microphone for my audio recording. I placed the condenser microphone closely in the direction of the roots to get the sounds of the branches sweeping in the wind. I used my connected headphones for balancing the sound levels on the sound device and attempted to reducing noise interference throughout the recording processes.

The Edge of Wilderness- Video Installation. Industrial Ear, Vancouver. (2000) Hildegard Westerkamp- Composer, Sound Ecologist.
           Florence Debeugny - Photography.
My Major Project tutor advised me to hear a few of Hildegard Westerkamp ecological sound composition projects. This sound composition ‘The Edge of Wilderness’ alerts the binding of materials and man -made infrastructure that invades the rural surroundings of nature. Rhythm acoustics reverberating the surroundings in desolate spaces.
I love the rawness of the truth in the words been performed by Westerkamp, and the unapologetic voices of disappointment with the rational predicament of work machinery in habitations.

Sound Artist and Researcher Sandra Kazlauskaite was a guest Practitioner at London college Of Communication on October 3rd 2019.
I found a relation in her work as her projects have a researched based purpose and I enjoy making works that have a story or culture ties that need to be told, so it’s fully understandable to the viewer or listener.
Sandra Kazlauskaite’s project ‘Oasis’ (2016) is a multi channel sound installation, that questions human relationships with environmental sounds. Creating a man-made oasis space as a tranquil escape in the urban landscapes of city life.
