All of a sudden, I get Bauhaus twice in a row! The mushroom for day eleven of Fungruary is the Devil's Cigar (chorioactis geaster), aka the Texas Star or Kirinomitake [キリノミタケ <- according to Wikipedia). This is an extremely rare wild fungi but there is surprisingly a lot of information recorded in the few studied cases! Described as having a "leathery" texture, the Devil's Cigar was named aptly for its similar color to smoking tobacco. Underground this fungi has a thick root and grow upward in the shape of a pointed-almond, the lips of the cap unfolding during specific moisture conditions. Part of what makes this specimen so rare are its natural habitats; the Devil's Cigar has only been reportedly found in parts of Texas and Japan.
Fun fact: In a genetic study. it was found that the two populations of the Devil's Cigar found in Texas and Japan had grown separately for about 19 million years! You can read more about it here.
I've been really enjoying this month's art challenge! Thank you to the other artists who have supported me on here - it's an honor to have my work next to yours!

This is my first time creating Bauhaus artwork! For day ten of Fungruary, we have the Guepinia (guepinia helvelloides), or Apricot Jelly, which is an arguably better name! These mushrooms are brightly-colored salmon or orange while growing in tender and fleshy bunches. In terms of what "jelly" implies, Guepinia is actually common consumed! They're pickled and candied in regions of South America, but they can be found elsewhere in North America, Europe, Eastern-Europe, and China (it has only seemed to be recorded in China and not the rest of Asia).
Fun fact: The Guepinia mushroom becomes easily dehydrated and produces new spores each time it rains! You can read more about it here.

I realized that my mushrooms have been missing a bit of a...human touch. So, for the ninth day of Fungruary, I tried to create art-realism of the Parrot Waxcap (gliophorus psittacinus)! You might find this species in North America, Britain, and Ireland in typically neutral pastures appearing brightly colored and almost always slimy, as its name implies; in Latin/Greek, glia- means glue and -phorus means bearing. The green goo that covers this mushroom from cap to stem is thought to be a natural aesthetic to ward off potential consumers due to its supposed grossness (I haven't been able to find any other current theories).
Fun fact: Though the Parrot Waxcap is considered saprobic (survives on nutrients from decaying organic matter), more recent studies show a potential relationship with moss, as they appear often together! You can read more about it here.
This might have been my first piece without a background, which was very much unintended! Also, I'm surprised that I haven't rolled a 4 for the style of Bauhaus yet...

I've been doing this February art challenge completely traditional because I can't use my tablet atm, so the time away has helped me appreciate my digital resources even more than I did previously

Starting off this week with an abstract Destroying Angel (amanita virosa), aka Fool's Mushroom or Death Angel! After reading about how toxic and deadly this species is, I wanted to reflect that same hierarchy of fear by including layers and a striking red outline, almost like it's saying, "don't even touch it!" These guys are responsible for more than 90% of fatal cases because of their similarity to edible fungi (Button, Meadow or Horse mushrooms) and the delayed symptoms post-ingestion. To make matters worse, there are no known antidotes for this poison and the irreversible damage may require a liver transplant. Talk about destructive!
Fun fact: Fungi considered poisonous and inedible are technically called "toadstools" rather than mushrooms, but mycologists often overlook this as an insignificant detail. You can read more about it here!

After taking a sick day, here is my latest rendition of day six and seven of Fungruary! Depicted above in my attempt at photorealism are an Inky Cap (coprinopsis atramentaria), aka the Common Ink Cap, and a Wrinkled Peach (rhodotus), or Rosy Veincap. Though they may not ever grow this closely to one another in real life - Inky Caps grow on disturbed ground while the Wrinkled Peach prefers undecayed substrates - the two of them make a perfect pair! The Inky Cap was once used for its ink, often growing into an appearance of grey or blue because of such qualities. The Wrinkled Peach similarly "bleeds" but in the form of orange/red liquid when maturing. Neither mushroom are necessarily edible nor strictly poisonous, but the Wrinkled Peach is currently considered a threatened species!
Fun fact (Inky Cap): This mushroom's mycotoxin, coprine, is chemically similar to Disilfiram, which is prescribed to sobering alcoholics! You can read more about it here.
Fun fact (Wrinkled Peach): The uncanny oozing process is called "fungal guttation" which is not so well understood in fungi as it is in plants. You can read more about it here!
And that concludes week one!

Day five of Fungruary! Let me introduce you to my surrealist-interpretation of the Enoki (flammulina filiformis), aka Nametake, Jingu, Nim Kim Châm, Paengi Beoseot, and Futu. This mushroom is extremely common in East-Asian cuisine, often appearing in tight bunches of long white stems branching small round caps. Outside of the kitchen, these mushrooms look quite different; cream-colored bodies and dark brown caps make wild Enoki look like a different species entirely! This is thought to be because domesticated Enoki is grown in the dark while wild Enoki experiences regular light exposure. They also use gills just like the Spotted Cort!
Fun fact: According to an animal-trial, Enoki consumption has been linked to supportive heart health and slowing cancer cells! You can read more about it here.
#if you're wondering why there's fish its because they use GILLS hahah#funguary 2025#funguary#mushrooms#sophiamarquinn#illustration#art#drawing#feefal#mycology#fungi

For the fourth day of Fungruary, I rolled for an "abstract" style again! The mushroom of the day was the Morel (morchella esculenta), a very delicious and cherished species. Thought to be rare, these lil guys do not grow in clusters and possess an earthy honeycomb-cap that makes them even harder to find. Since they are decomposers, foragers might find them on campgrounds or in old orchards, though Morels found on apple orchards may contain arsenate pesticides. Consumers are also cautioned to parboil/blanch their mushrooms before fully cooking them, otherwise they might become sick.
Fun fact: A holiday called "Mushroom Season" persists in the Southern and Midwestern-states of the US where locals find Black (first to appear in the season), Grey (appear second), and Golden Morels (the biggest and last to appear)! You can learn more about it here.
Posted this one a little late because I felt that I needed more time to finish the artwork. In the end, I'm very happy with it!

After rolling a 3 (very fitting considering it's the 3rd day of Fungruary), I created an art nouveau piece based on the Spotted Cort (cortinarius iodes), aka the Viscid Violet Cort! This is the first mushroom in the series thus far to have "gills" - the soft ridges protected underneath the cap - which are used to release spores. These gills are color-changing as well and the irregular spots that appear on the head of the cap fade well into maturity. It is edible, but eating this mushroom is not advised.
Fun fact: Some foragers will use their lips to identify this mushroom because lips are sensitive to secreted slime! You can read more about is here.

Second day of Fungruary and I rolled a 1 . . . so realism it was! Today I recreated the Chicken of the Woods (laetiporus sulphureus), or the Sulfur Shelf! You might find this brightly-colored mushroom growing naturally in Europe and North America along the bases of dead trees closely shelved together. These guys are actually edible (not to be confused with the Jack O'Lantern mushroom) and reportedly taste like chicken!
Fun fact: There are seven Chicken of the Woods species native to North America divided by the different sides of the Rocky Mountains! You can read more about it here.

Happy first day of Fungurary! This mushroom is a Veiled Lady (phallus indusiatus), aka a stinkhorn. These names are in reference to its veil-like appearance (as shown in the reference image) and its stench of rotting meat. If they weren't already easily to smell from afar, they can also be spotted at a distance, growing to 10 inch (25 cm) tall. Interestingly, this fungi is used for medicinal purposes and cooking in China, where it is called Zhu Sun.
Fun fact: A common misbelief is that the odor of a Veiled Lady can make a female-human experience a spontaneous org*sm! You can read more about it here.
I decided to add a d6-table to the challenge, so every day I will roll a d6 and create my piece in that style. Today was abstract, a type of style that I am completely unfamiliar with! It was fun to give it a shot anyways.
