munrx:
❛ i’m fine. why do you ask? ❜ muninn REPLIES, his brow crinkling in confusion — before he smoothes it out using the first two fingers of his right hand; ironically, the region around his forehead is where most of the pain has concentrated. ❛ the buzzing and whirring sounds, i can handle. but since i can barely hear them over them … ❜ he makes a wide gesture with his arm to encompass most of the coffee shop, hoping it will offer enough of a visual aid to make his point. ❛ they think so loudly. it’s like they’re trying to drill a hole in my brain. ❜
sonny already could tell this guy wasn’t human, but what exactly he was... now that was hard to decipher. “think loudly? buddy are you intoxicated?” he played dumb, not wanting to give away his true self or intentions. “why don’t you get out of here? find a quite park, sit under a tree and meditate or some shit.”

“It’s definitely unique in that aspect,” Achlys murmured, thinking back to the many, many people she’d met over the centuries. Many had shared the same name, but of those she’d met, it was the few who hadn’t that she could recall in vivid detail. Strange how that worked. “Could this be why some hum - ah, people - decide to change their names?” She’d thought it was an odd practice when she’d first heard about it, but they were a … complicated lot at times, so it wasn’t entirely unexpected. “Both, actually.” She offered a light chuckle in return - no point in choosing one or the other when both worked equally well. “But if you would really prefer me to call you Sonny, I can.” He was right about one thing; it was easier to pronounce. But she had no trouble saying the other. Practice makes perfect.
“i guess. people are weird half the times.” sonny smirked, noting the small blip she revealed. still, he couldn't mention he was a creature... not yet. “you can just call me sonny. i don't expect anyone to remember my real name.”
“so do you prefer any nicknames? or do people just call you pretty?”

Direct hit.
She wanted to triumphantly throw her fist in the air – giving him a thumbs down in the process – but a goddess of her standing really shouldn’t practice the art of sore winning. So instead, Keto tossed him a victorious look, one with a grin that stretched across her lips, wide enough to show teeth. It wasn’t that she enjoyed fighting, but, well … maybe she did? Maybe she just liked putting other creatures in their place. Maybe she liked robbing them of hope.
Or maybe she was bored.
Either way, she was having fun at the expense of this sea critter who couldn’t be bothered to leave the safety and comfort of the ocean.
And it was that particular mindset that gave his words the chance to crawl beneath her skin, burrowing deep. “Fight you … with my fists?” She repeated aloud, pondering the idea for a good, long minute before finally reaching a decision. “Fine – if that’s what you want.” Three steps closer, and her feet were in the water, submerged up to her ankles.
It never even occurred to her that this could be exactly what he wanted … and needed – to turn things around in his favor.
She was simply in it for the fun … and the complete erasure of boredom. Was that so wrong?
“Can I?” Keto eyed him thoughtfully, slowly moving closer, the water level rising with each carefully planned step. “Are you really that easy to defeat?” And here she was, hoping for a bit of a challenge.
“yes. you look strong enough to fight me, and win.” sonny held back a smirk, eyes bright green as he watched the woman give into his will. he knew it, this woman was a fighter; he respected that, truly. “like i said, i’m just a meek merman. so lonely... so weak...” when her ankles were covered by the ocean, sonny’s mind sparked. his eyes flashed bright blue as he whipped a stream of water to undertow her into the water, pulling her out further into the ocean. “come closer, come fight me i know you can.” his hypnotic voice echoed through the water, as he pulled her closer.
#GOOD FIGHT HIM PLEASE#and omg she's great i love her so much fucking badass#c: keto#also this is shit please I'm sorry

What a sourpuss. He was even grumpier than what’s-his-name-who-slayed-the-lion-and-stole-a-few-golden-apples. But then, those two fools probably had more in common than they realized. Perhaps she should introduce them. “But I don’t want to back off.” Bottom lip poking out in a childish pout, Keto crossed her arms, refusing to budge an inch. “I’m having way too much fun at your expense.” And no one – absolutely no one – came between Keto and her fun. Unless you were a ball of hot, boiling water. Shrieking in surprise when the water she’d only just brought to a boil suddenly hit her square in the face, sending her sprawling to the ground, she wiped at her face with her forearm, her skin running a little warmer than normal thanks to the water splat.
Oh, who was she kidding?
It burned.
“Well done,” she harrumphed – and no, she wasn’t talking about her skin. “Giving as good as you get – but you know what that means, right?” She tossed him a cold, reptilian smile full of anticipation. “War.” And with that, she launched three times as many water torpedoes, aiming for his face as well – returning fire with fire. She could manage that much, at least.
sonny held back a yelp as the triple torpedoes came straight for him. he tried to escape into the ocean but the force was still so strong, pushing him back and causing him to tumble backwards in cycles. once he got his bearings, he growled, fins along his back ruffling. he couldn’t fight this bitch from the sea, but if he were to get out and go into his human form, he’d be even weaker. he had to be smart, had to trick her into weakening herself. he swam closer to the woman, head coming out of the water just enough for his eyes to be visible, flashing bright green, then lifting his whole head above the water before he spoke. “why don’t you come closer and fight me with your fists. i’m just a simple merman. i mean no harm. you can easily defeat me.” he smirked a bit, knowing the words this woman wanted to hear. she was a fighter, he could tell. so why not bring her in for a fight?
#c: keto#he's using hypnosis on her but it only works if she subconsciously wants to do what he says#so he's inviting her in the water to fight him#so if she REALLY wants to fight him then the hypnosis works#otherwise it'll just gloss over her

“You’re probably right but… that’s sad. I’m sorry that you have to hide like that.” She chuckled lightly and nodded. “That is true. Nothing here stands out.” That was something to remember. She was less likely to be noticed here, which was a blessing. “Normally I’d offer to take you there instantly. But I don’t think I can teleport that far right now.”
“don’t be sorry. we all have to hide, it’s the only way to survive.” sonny sighed. “no don’t worry. i actually don’t mind the ride. gives me time to cool down. which is sorta why i snapped at you back at the cafe... i get cranky when i’m in human form for too long.” he gave ariel a sheepish grin, hoping his words were an apology enough.

“Human?’ The boy cocks his head the other way. You can catch a glimpse of blue gills under his chin. ‘My sisters told me stories of humans. They said they sometimes sing to them to lure the men underwater.’ He grins, showing off his sharp needle-teeth. 'I’ve been practicing. Want to hear?”

arielangel:
Ariel grimaced, her hands curling into fists. The sharp pain of her nails digging into her palms kept her grounded in the here and now, not letting the memories take her. “It sounds like what they did to me,” she said eventually. She reached out slowly to give Sonny’s hand a light squeeze. Both of them had been alone, but perhaps no longer. “Why did you come here? To Las Vegas?”
the comforting squeeze eased sonny’s mind, thoughts no longer racing and he was pulled back to the present. “figured staying in a desert would help hide the fact i’m a sea boy. plus if anything crazy did happen, like god forbid i had to do something, it wouldn’t even reach the level of newlines like ‘crazy elvis impersonator gets shit-faced and throws up on president’.” he smiled slightly. “it’s tough, since staying like this for so long is painful, and i have to drive at least an hour and a half to the nearest bank of water. but it’s worth it to be safe.”

arielangel:
“I’m sorry. Are you still able to swim? To find them again?” Under normal circumstances it may be a silly question. But she was an angel without wings. Surely it were possible that he was a merman without a tail. “Like I said. I no longer believe kindness exists in all of them. If I could, I would find that place and burn it to the ground.” The anger was uncharacteristic of her, she knew. It was so… human.
“i can still swim, they didn’t take my tail. but they... when i was held captive, they did a lot of experiments on me... injected me with medicine and sedatives and when i was finally free and tried to swim as fast as i normally could, i realized i was slower... weaker.” sonny gulped, his thoughts dark and filling his chest with tight air. “good, they don’t deserve the trait of kindness. all of them... monsters, fucking terrible monsters.”

“I’m sorry,” she said quietly. “Have you seen your family since you got out at least?” Surely if he were caught, they would want to know he was– well, not okay, but alive. “They tricked me into capture. I was called to help someone but it was a trap. I don’t even know what they used to hold me.” She’d been strong back then, stronger than any human. But she couldn’t break those bonds.
“no...” his voice was quiet, small, almost fragile. “when merfolk are in danger, they can swim to the other side of the globe in a matter of seconds. when i was captured they swam. they must think i’m dead by now.” sonny’s eyes flashed blue with anger, not towards ariel, but towards at her situation. “you go thinking you’re helping someone... a human, as disgusting as they are, and they take you. wow... they really are pieces of shits.”

Ariel nodded. She hadn’t felt so alone in over a thousand years. If ever. From what she remembered of being human, she had had siblings to care for. “…I was alone. I… I thought everyone was kept alone. Were you not?” Ariel didn’t know what that meant. Had there even been other enochians in there? Perhaps the scientists had kept them separate. Or perhaps she was the only one tricked into being caught.
sonny felt terrible... but in a way was relieved that someone else was going through the same thing as him. “i was alone too. my family managed to escape, but they took me. i don’t know if others were captured afterwards but as far as i know, i’m the only merman in this area, and the only one to experience...” he felt sick thinking of the tank, couldn’t even bring himself to say it.
