Eren and psychological projection - Interpretation about SNK chapter 112
I read volume 28 recently and the discussion between Eren, Mikasa and Armin introduced a lot of different elements. It is a strange and paradoxical discussion since most of the topics and dilemmas Eren throws at his friends, are some that can be applied to him as well. It got me curious why Eren then so aggressively puts forth these claims against his friends. I do not have a lot of concrete evidence to back up this interpretation, but I`d like to propose a reading, that this discussion can be read as Eren projecting his own internal fears and dilemmas onto his friends. Maybe this projection can bee seen as mechanism, where Eren tries to reason with himself that the path he has taken is the correct one, that the problems he lists are ones that plague his friends, not himself. So what are these topics then? They are:
-Memories crafting the identity of a person and free will
- Ignorance having a negative impact on freedom (if you do not have knowledge about the state of things, you are not free)
The structure of this post will be the following one: I will start with the point about knowledge and freedom, since it is a topic where I have most things to say. Then I`ll proceed onto memories and free will. As a third element while it is not a major point, I`d like to touch upon topic which could be named along the lines of: origin of power. In this section I will ramble about the origin of Ackerman power and how Eren depicts Mikasa, and what that possible tells about Eren.
As always when talking about different terms, it is good to give some sort explanation of what they mean. Psychological projection is:
“a defence mechanism in which the human ego defends itself against unconscious impulses or qualities (both positive and negative) by denying their existence in themselves while attributing them to others.”
