there i was again tonight. forcing laughter, faking smiles. same old tired, lonely place. walls of insincerity, shifting eyes and vacancy vanished when i saw your face– all i can say is, it was enchanting to meet you. | a cowboy and his songbird. william h. bonney & lucy gray baird.

❝ you can go back to the capitol, nobody is stopping you, coriolanus. i want to stay here where i know best. the capitol isn't where i belong. you realize the capitol is the reason i almost died, right ? i could have died in the games. ❞ lucy gray stopped dead in her tracks and argued, her fingers curling into a fist as she tried to keep her cool. after a moment, she continued on her path, rolling her eyes at his words. ❝ we do not have to and i refuse to. don't call me that. ❞ she groaned in frustration as she picked up her speed, attempting to get to maude ivory faster while losing coriolanus.
"You forget it's NOT an option." Jaw grinding, it taking so much to deal with such an unbearable girl. "By some chance. I bet not all of you, I bet a lot has died from this form of living. There isn't even going to be a doctor in the middle of the woods, there won't be food, warmth in the winter or any prosperous living... and we can't stay in twelve. You're being reckless and choosing to be potentially being killed by the mayor, you and our child. So I simply am not allowing you to make these reckless choices, endangering us ALL." he corrects, truly believing to himself that it's not control. Both of them will thank him one day, that he was such a doting, protective father from the beginning. He needs this child convinced, that he isn't a monster and that they'll look up to him. Obsessive with ensuring that, even. The type of father he didn't have and being the opposite is every bit of his goal, just to prove Lucy Gray wrong about what she said because of course.. he never forgets things like that. "Well, I can't trust you. So continue walking Lucy Gray and stop acting like a spoiled brat." he scolds, in disbelief this is what he'll have to put with for a wife. What did he get himself into? A life long headache of raising two children?

lucy gray clenched her jaw tightly, glaring at him. ❝ you just can’t wrap your head around the thought that some people don’t have to live in the capitol to thrive and survive. ❞ she accused, clearly angry at the way he was insulting her people. ❝ news flash : most of the covey died because of peacekeepers, guess you’re not the only corrupt one. ❞ she huffed as she ignored the rest of his words, already starting to make her way toward where she knew at least maude ivory would be. ❝ sorry i can’t hear you, i don’t speak annoying. ❞ she didn’t care how ridiculous she sounded, the brunette thought he sounded more ridiculous with the way he wouldn’t let her see her family. ❝ by the way, i refuse to marry you. you can’t marry me when i’m unwilling like this. ❞

❝ i will choose, you just don't like my choice, therefore, you don't give me one !! ❞ she was sick of him trying to control her. lucy gray wasn't one to be controlled, she hated the idea of somebody trying to tell her what to do. ❝ i do understand that it's not just us, but raising a baby out there would be fine. us covey turned out fine, i don't know why you're so against it ! ❞ brown eyes narrowed at coriolanus as she finally turned back to look at him. ❝ i won't run. i just want to talk to my family without you there. ❞
❝ you didn't give me an opportunity to choose, so yes, you did force me to come here with you. ❞ lucy gray said angrily, all but snarling as he pretended as if he were doing this for her and the baby's safety. she hated how he was acting as if he had the best interest of her and her baby in mind. ❝ i want to speak with them alone. you are not welcome to follow me. ❞ not that she had issue telling them about how shitty he was while he was standing there-- she'd done that with billy taupe, but she knew he'd try to twist it if he were there. ❝ do what you have to do, and i'll be back in an hour or two. ❞

❝ i suppose you're right about that. i just wish i'd seen sooner how awful he was. it would have saved a lot of trouble. ❞ catching billy taupe with mayfair had been heartbreaking. coriolanus's words had her blushing, eyes locked to his for a moment as the waitress came over. she gave her order to the older woman before handing over her menu. the brunette's focus turned back to the blonde after the waitress walked away, a grin spreading across her face, thankfully having recovered from the moment before. ❝ guess i'm just that charmin', aren't i, gorgeous ? ❞ she winked at him as she nudged his foot under the table.
"Well. That just means they're a match." Coryo softly laughs, blues falling on the way her thumb rubs over his knuckles. Even the smallest touch creates a pang sensation inside his chest. Looking back up at her, pretending it doesn't affect him in the way he knows it does. "Of course, Lucy Gray. I didn't plan to like you so much. But here I am." Leaning closer to whisper before playfully smiling at the brunette and leaning back to answer the waitress that comes along to take their order.

"I didn't force you, Lucy Gray. Circumstances came up, you became pregnant," To his dismay, horror, but a perfect excuse now. "And now I have to ensure you're safe. That our baby's safe. It isn't my fault you are being stubborn. And like I said... there's no other choice but for us to marry. I didn't plan all of this to happen so early either, but this is the way it is now." he explained, for the hundredth time what it seemed like. Arm dropping against his side once she turned away from him like he predicted, face falling in a flat expression. "Don't come with you?" A confusion laced his voice, wondering if she really expects him to oblige. He won't.

❝ mhmm sure, ❞ lucy gray playfully rolled her eyes at coriolanus, shaking her head. ❝ oh surely he is, and i’m sure mayfair isn’t yelling at him for letting his truck get destroyed like that, too. ❞ revenge was sweet, especially as she sat there with a more handsome man, rubbing her thumb along the top of his hand. ❝ thank you for helping me with everything last night, i couldn’t have gotten through the day without you. ❞ the brunette admitted in a low voice, giving a small smile. she was truly grateful for coriolanus, he’d really turned her day around from being awful to ending not too terribly.
❝ all of this what, darlin' ? ❞ lucy gray teased, tapping his foot with hers once more. she allowed her eyes to scan over the menu again before deciding on what she'd get. ❝ i think i'm gonna get the strawberry french toast with a smoothie. ❞ she told him, putting her menu back down before reaching to grab his hand, a wide grin spread across her face. ❝ i sure hope greasy taupe is having the worst day ever right now. he deserves it. ❞ the brunette still loved the nickname coriolanus had given her ex, it made her laugh every time she thought about it.

❝ lying to me, forcing me to come with you back here and then to marry you in the capitol, sure such love. ❞ lucy gray said bitterly as she pushed his hand away from her. she turned away from him, clenching her jaw tighter as tears threatened to spill from her eyes. she hated this, hated the way she couldn’t help but feel betrayed and absolutely heartbroken by the way he’d lied. thankfully the feeling of furiousness is what overtook the other emotions, shielding anything else she may have felt from being known by anyone else. ❝ i’m going to go see the covey to tell them, don’t come with me. ❞ since the other covey members hadn’t been there with them, they’d most likely assume coriolanus was still a good guy. lucy gray planned to tell them everything — maybe a last-ditch effort to find an escape.
lucy gray's jaw clenched tightly at his words. the way he spoke about things she'd done in the past to survive. she had to though, there was no other way in the districts. it was tragic, surely, growing up that quickly, yet here he was pushing it in her face again. she didn't respond to those words, having to push back the emotions threatening to spill out. emotions other than anger. regret, hurt, heartbreak, all of it. ❝ you don't love me. don't give me that bullshit. that's not what this is. ❞ lucy gray knew better than to be hostile at the moment, but boy did she want to. she wanted to shove him, to scream, all of it.

"Please, stop distracting me Lucy Gray. I can't concentrate with all of this–" Cute way she has about her. Just her in general, the cutest most vibrant and playful person he's ever met in his mundane life and will ever meet in his life. But he ends up chuckling instead, because he can't admit it out loud. Hands opening his menu, eyes scanning over each thing until one intrigues. "Blueberry waffles, I think. And a smoothie." he finally answers, but gets why she's having a hard time because all the many other things listed sound just as appetizing. Apple cinnamon french toast, blueberry cinnamon french toast, eggs, fruit salad, potatoes, a long lineup of smoothies, the menu was endless of delicious sounding things.

"Can we drop you, in return, pretending I don't want our child when I do too. You would just love for me to not want them. You are clearly the one who doesn't want me to have any part of them, so you can have them all to yourself. Do you not realize how twisted and selfish that truly is? I don't agree, not when your means of survival are prostitution. Mine is different, more logical and healthy for an environment for a child to grow up in." he retorts, his jaw tightening the more she wants to fight against him than be for him. Lucy Gray's fire was simultaneously the thing he was compelled by her the most but hated most. "Fine." Broad shoulders shrugging, "But don't be so sure and certainly don't sound so threatening, you may regret it." She will regret it. Being ominous and threatening of his own, he switches completely around in the same minute, even the tone of his voice, "Which is all a shame..." Stopping in their tracks to turn towards her, thumb gently pressing into her chin, "I'm just trying to take care of you, because I love you."

lucy gray let out a soft chuckle as he looked under the table before moving to tap his foot again. ❝ what ever could that have been ? ❞ she joked back, a wide grin spread across her face as she grabbed her menu, looking through it, occasionally peaking over the top at coriolanus, wiggling her eyebrows. ❝ what are you going to get ? i literally cannot decide. ❞ the brunette admitted as she glanced through, taking note of what intrigued her so she could start to narrow it down to decide.
❝ exactly, you get it. ❞ lucy gray chuckled as she nudged him. it had been a lot of ups and downs when it came to her emotions, plus staying up all night had taken a toll on her. ❝ that sounds perfect. back to your place and sleep all day. ❞ she grinned as she slid into the booth, putting her hands on the table. ❝ you'll have to hold me to keep me warm though, you know. i don't make the rules. ❞ the brunette grinned, gently tapping his foot with hers underneath the table.

❝ how about this, we're both to blame. now can we drop it ? you're really starting to frustrate me ! ❞ she was angry with the fact that he kept trying to place blame on her, when it was him as well. ❝ you don't even want this baby, you just don't want me to have them to myself even though i'd be a far better parent. ❞ lucy gray said, her emotions taking over. typically, she knew what to say and how to act to get what she wanted from somebody, but right now her emotions were getting the better of her and she was acting before she could even think on it. ❝ if we're to be married, then guarantee i will make your life hell on earth. i will do everything in my power to keep you from succeeding in anything. ❞
❝ usually it doesn't just happen like that, so it wasn't me or my fault. it was you. ❞ lucy gray clenched her jaw as she narrowed her eyes at the other. him mentioning that the men were probably old aged struck a nerve in lucy gray. mainly because it may have been true. she'd done what she needed to do to survive. ❝ just mine. ❞ she told him possessively, putting a hand to her stomach. she was the one carrying this child, therefore she had more right to them than he did. as coriolanus found ways around her words, the color drained from her face and she suddenly felt sick, as if she couldn't breathe. ❝ we aren't getting married. i don't want to be married to you. ❞ she told him, trying to keep it together. she couldn't marry him. the brunette was already beginning to feel trapped.

"Is that true? I'm not sure I believe you." he quips, feeling like he should be worried about it more than he actually is. A chuckle sounding from the taller at the kiss that gets pressed to his cheek, sheepish, but trying to remain calm and like it doesn't affect him in the huge way it really does. Opening the door up, letting her step in first before finding a spot in the booth by the window. "I agree, that was a lot." Everything they got up to last night from the news this morning. "We'll call today off and go back to my place, then." Wanting to say he told her so, she wouldn't be able to last but refraining. "It's too cold anyway and you definitely need a nap like I said earlier, I was going to worry about you all day if you didn't come up with this idea."
