How to get back in the flow
(from someone who just got back into the flow)
1. Find your minimum wordcount sweet spot. If you write 100 words, do you just keep going? I don’t. My minimum wordcount sweet spot is 1,000. I might stop when I hit that, but usually I won’t. 1k can easily become 3k if all goes well. Your minimum wordcount sweet spot is the lowest goal you can set that by the end of it you’re ready to write more. Find it, use it, swear by it and be ready to change it as your sweet spot changes.
2. Do some character backstories. Write about their lives in the past. Think about your story, but what’s going on in the background. It might give you plot ideas. It might get you hype to write about them again.
3. Assess your Future Plot. Do you have no future plot? That might have you stuck.  Do you have a lot of future plot but you just don’t know how to get there? Buddy it’s time to take the train off the tracks. If you’re blocked up because you don’t know what’s happening next, your outline needs editing. And on that note…
4. Get Hype About What You’re Gonna Write. Think back on your WIP and the root idea that got it started. Think about failed WIPs with concepts you adored. Do you like black markets? Characters who one-up their abusers? Do you want to wax rhapsodic about character x’s clothing choices? Are you vying for another fight scene? Guess what you’re doing next! Doesn’t fit the plot? Doesn’t matter, you can the plot. If you’re writing something from scratch then you still have room to play. Go on a tangent. Wear your self-indulgence like a badge of pride.
5. Bore yourself into it. Do what you can to remove all distractions from your immediate area. This means something different for different people. Me with my ADHD, I give myself less-favorable options. I don’t hate doing dishes, but I’d rather write. But then at some point writing will become excruciating, and I can go do the dishes. If I really want to be in the flow, I cut contact for a whole weekend. Not everybody has a whole weekend. Try for an hour, half an hour. Go for as much time as you can get away with.

8 Character Creation Tips (for DnD or just writing in general)
1. Have a goal
Tumblr media
While it may sound like I’m stating the obvious here, your character needs to have something they want to accomplish. Maybe they want to be the best at something, see a place, fall in love, conquer the world, or something else. Whatever it is, they need to have something that they desire beyond all other things. Ideally, give them more than one goal. Make them have to sacrifice one to achieve the other, to add extra drama
2. Have a reputation
Tumblr media
Maybe they’re the best artist in their class or they’re great at juggling. Perhaps they slipped on the stairs in front of their whole village. Either way, give something for the locals to remember about them. That way it can give you a starting point for the interactions with other characters
3. Have a friend
Tumblr media
Whether a friend, a coworker, a sibling, an army buddy, or someone they saved, have someone close to your character whom they’re close to and wish well. Yeah, angsty “I have no friends” characters can be fun, but in small doses; eventually the reader gets fed up with them. At the very least the character needs someone to talk to or bounce ideas off of
4. Have a home
Tumblr media
It may be a neighborhood they grew up in, their parents’ house, or a room they’ve been renting in a tavern. Hell, it could even be a person if you so choose. Everyone needs to feel secure at one time or another
5. Have a signature item
Tumblr media
Now, recognize that this may not work for EVERY character, but it’s up to you to decide what will fit and what won’t. In many cases, it can work. A signature item is something that is recognizably YOUR CHARACTER’S, be it a weapon, a scarf, a toy, or a piece of jewelry. It’s something that makes them feel like themself
6. Have a problem
Tumblr media
This should be something other than the problem addressed in the main plot line. Maybe a member of their family is sick, they are broke, or they’re failing their classes. This helps make your character seem more realistic because NO ONE has one problem at a time
7. Have a secret
Tumblr media
This can affect the plot or not; either way, it helps make your character more well rounded. Maybe your character can’t read, left their crewmates to die when a kracken attacked their ship, or made their long lost sister run away. If you choose to have it affect the plot in any way, this secret should embarrass your character, make it so that other characters don’t trust your character, or somehow endanger them and the people they’re close to if found out
8. Have a reason to be brave and to fight
Tumblr media
Maybe it’s because your character wants to be like their hero, maybe it’s so they can repay a debt (like if someone saved their life previously), maybe it’s for their child, but your character needs to have a reason to occasionally face their fears
Have fun!!!

i just wanted to say that i’m 100% here for anyone who needs it at anytime. send me a message, an anon, an ask, an ask that asks me to respond privately(i guarantee i will), no matter what i will do whatever i am capable of to give advice or help. and trust me, i have a lot of experience to go by, i probably have some sort of advice for like 85% of scenarios. my parents are divorced, i’m a closeted bi, i have a republican family, there was a time in my life where my friends completely turned on me, i have an insane family and approximately 80,000 little sisters, i have had and do have a lot of self image and weight issues, i have anxiety and obsessive compulsive disorder, i promise i probably know how to kinda sorta help you in at least some way for so many situations. and even if i’ve never had any experience even close to yours, i will try my best, and sometimes it’s even better to have an outsider assess the situation!!! whether we talk every day or you aren’t even following me or anything in between i promise that i am always here to talk and help. and this also goes for if you don’t want a response, if you ever need to just vent, go ahead, just ask me not to ask questions and i promise i’ll keep my nosy ass out of your business. just don’t keep it to yourself. if you have no one else to turn to, or even if you do but you don’t want someone youre close with knowing, turn to me because i will be here for you. i promise

Today I discovered this writer’s tactic to face her fear of rejection and failure, and it’s honestly very inspiring?! This kinda rewired my brain and I feel everyone should read and think about it.

how do I join the book club of mirth?
just DM me! We use discord to chat so you’ll need that, and I don’t wanna post the link publicly. :)
edit: also if you end up too busy to participate it’s ok. And feel free to mute the non-book related chat threads because sometimes we get going about really random stuff especially if any of us have been drinking
