Kieran walked a twisted landscape, full of the corpses of trees like gallows standing watch over the darkness. Dust kicked up, only to coat his worn boots with a fine gray powder like ash. Up in the sky, he could see the sun, a dark void against the blanket of stars. He reached the river and knelt, plunging his hand into the still water. It came away slick with blood. He knew whose dream he was in tonight.
"You insist on seeking out my gift. Why? Are you scouting for your masters, monster, or do you remember what we had?" Kieran stood without rubbing the blood off and turned to face a gaunt, pale man.
The man’s eyes glittered a pale blue very similar to Kieran’s and when he walked closer, it was with the same proud stride. His clothes were stained with blood, as was his mouth, and his gaze never wavered from Kieran’s neck. “You belong with us! Not with that filth you’ve allowed yourself to fall into. How many times must I ask you to join us?” He stepped closer, and Kieran kicked him to his knees.
"I’ve told you before, I’m not interested in your disease. I’m going to put you down, even if it claims my life. Father." Kieran staggered back as the monster lunged to his feet and knocked him back. He landed on his back, and all the air rushed out of his lungs as the monster landed on top of him.
"You belong with your family, Kieran Michael Byrne. And you will join us. Sooner or later.” His breath was fetid as he leaned in to Kieran’s neck. He opened his mouth wide and bit down.
Kieran gave a cry and pushed with all his might. Light erupted around them as everything dissolved and Kieran woke, tangled in his sheets. Midday London. Light streamed in through the window. He gave a shuddering breath and ran a hand over his neck. It came away slick with blood. His curious fingers found two neat holes over the artery.
Kieran cursed and pressed a hand to his neck, then made his way to the bathroom.
