Week 18- FINALE
This week I and Nikhil were color grading the two trailers so first we color graded the second trailer as it was an almost two-minute trailer we knew it is going to take quite a long time for us.
Then we color graded the teaser trailer as there only one scene in it which needed to be color graded, after color grading both trailers Nikhil added subtitles to both of them as they were in the Hindi language.
After this Nikhil made Gmail account for our film and uploaded the trailers through this on youtube. then I added both the trailers on the website.
Now the only thing remaining was CCR, as the name suggests it had to be our creative critical reflection I had to sit and think about what exactly I went through and progressed thin the entire project for safe side i first wrote all the answers and then created a presentation on prezi.com.
It took me a while selecting a theme and adding the information than we added pictures made placements for other information, changed the font and alignment.and animation. After looking at the final output I was happy, with few corrections done. finally, I was done with CCR.

Week 17- Website
This week I had to start with the website where all our content would be uploaded like trailers, poster, working stills. basically, as it was a film promotional package we had to make sure that the website represents and helps in promoting well enough...
So first we bought a domain from the website called Godaddy.com and made our website called 8thefilm.in. I selected a theme and kept the content ready to upload.
It took me a little while to get through the tools to build the website but thanks to shritej sir’s guidance it was not as difficult as I thought. one by one I started creating spaces and then uploaded the content of the page accordingly, we created a website with 5 pages, hoe, trailers, film info, cast and crew, and gallery were the names of the pages
To make it easier as suggested I first created a normal online layout of the thing and then added the finals content over it. so before even our content was uploaded on the site I could see how the final product was going to be seen.
Finally, the once the website was done we showed it to sir and our HOD mam for approval. both liked it.
The only thing left to be added was our trailers as it was in the grading process.
Making a website is not that tough and now even I feel I should have my own website.

Week 16 - First cut
We were now done with the shooting Nikhil was asked to make the trailers and I was asked to make the poster and the website.
For the poster, I had no idea how to start so I removed my notebook and pen from my bag and started drawing a layout, there were some inputs from sir as well as Nikhil and we finalized the layout of the poster.
For the poster, we had decided to take a cutout of our protagonist and edit it into a pencil sketch and that sketch would be sitting on the silhouette of the Mumbai. above that came the title.
For the title, we thought something creative, as the name for our story is EIGHT we decided to make them with different things like (H) would be handcuffed on two cigars or (T) would be a hammer and these things were not random these were the things which were related to the film.
Now I was ready with the layout so I started editing in photoshop. I selected the character with polygon lasso tool and pasted it to a yellow color background than selected the image clicked on the filter option on photoshop and made it look like its a pencil sketch then taking an image in of the Mumbai silhouette I selected it and pasted it behind the cutout of our protagonist and then increased its size, I placed it in a way that it looks like that our protagonists are sitting on Mumbai and one of his hand is taking support of a tower. This was done as our tagline for the movie waa Mumbai Ka Raja Kaun.
Now the titling was left so what I did was took every object that looks like the letters in our title. so (E)was the eight in the font lifts used in old Indian elevator (I) was a bullet, (G)was just the letter G, then (H) was handcuffed on two cigars and last but not the least (T) was a hammer. this took quite a while though when it was made it looked beautiful, so then I placed it on the poster.
Then I added a text box where I wrote the name of the cast and crew and gave it a nice font and then placed it on the poster, so now I was done with the poster, there was only one thing left adding the releasing date. In the end, I added the date of release and we were done with our Poster.
Even though it was just one image I had to create (the poster). It was much more creative and tougher and also time to consume than what I thought. I never realized it took me almost the entire week to get to the final output of our film poster.

Week 15- Shoot, Shoot, Shoot
We were four days away from the shoot so for these three days I practiced camera movements and also practice handheld as I almost had 2 one take shots. what I did was going around the passage with camera shooting, this helped me in balancing the camera for a long time without shivering.
29/09/2018
one day before the short week, we had a lot of work today and today’s day was going to be hectic and stressful cause we have to travel a lot
Today morning 12 Nikhil was waiting for me on the Ghatkopar Metro station as we had to go Andheri to get the costumes of Asthana and Mahesh. As we reach the location we see there is big godown full of dress. as we enter we ask for the costumes we require like We asked them about the white shirt and white trouser and showing them a reference of actor Ajay Devgun playing Haji mastan. and he showed different varieties from which we selected the one we wanted then we asked them for a pair of pathani suits in different colors so they took us to a segment where they had all the traditional dresses. So he showed us some of the dresses. We didn't know the sizes for Azeem, Aditya but they were the same height and size of us so we instead tried it so if it fits us than it would fit them as well. so I tried the dress for Narendra and Nikhil tried it for Parth. after several trials, we selected some of them. it took us almost 2 hours for selecting and finalizing the dresses, after that we went to the counter for renting the dress. the manager was pretty nice so he gave us a discount but the price was still high and even if we paid we would not be having any money left for the rest of the props. so what we did was, we only rented the costumes for Asthana and Mahesh and we planned to used the pathani I had at home. after paying them to advance we left the dress shop.
Now we had to buy the clap, vests, and shorts, so first we went to Andheri station were found some stalls selling vests and shorts, they looked as we wanted cheap and dirt and also had colors I desired, so we bought it, we still didn't know were we would get the clap as Raju sir didn't pick our call so we googled it and found a stationary shop near Andheri station so we went there and the clap now only printing the information on the clap and some basic things like markers, Muslin cloth, orange. so we first went back to Ghatkopar and printed the information on the clap, while I was assisting the guy in the shop who was printing information on clap, Nikhil went to a nearby stationery shop and bought markers and the muslin cloth. After that, we went to my place to have lunch and get things from my place like cups, pathanis. it was 4;30. when we were leaving my place and while we were going to the station we also bought two oranges.
30/09/2018
Day1
It was 9 in the morning when I reached the location, after reaching there I and Nikhil called and reminded the actors about the timings. then we started rechecking the list of the things we would need today.
After some time Shrtej sir came, with him he brought A canon 80d camera with him and a tripod. after this, I took sir to the location to shoot and Nikhil want back to his home to bring all the props needed. After some time other characters arrived like Vasant sir who was playing the role of Mahesh, Paarth who is playing the role of Azeem and Avinash who is playing the role of Rajiv. then came are a makeup artist.
After everyone came Nikhil narrated the script to everyone and then we started the rehearsals and by one we started shooting. Before shooting anything we prayed to Lord Ganesha and then started the shoot.
During the first day, shoot started with a steady shot of the parking number (oo8) this shot also represents our films title Eight.
There was someplace in the parking lot where light could not reach so we used artificial light to light the place.
the next whole scene was shot in the car in the golden hour so we got proper natural lighting on the character face and also matched the scene as the scene was meant to be character Mahesh's dream where he has authority. this was also symbolic. The first-day shooting started at 1 pm and ended around 6-630
1/10/20108
Day 2
Second of the shoot we all of arrived around 10, after everyone came Nikhil was narrating them the script meanwhile I was down getting the set ready. the set was too dark so place artificial lights and made it how I visualized after than me and me, sir and Nikhil did a shot division and then took place the rehearsals. even I rehearsed with the camera as I had to record an one take.
After2-3 rehearsals we recorded the 1st take in which I had to follow the character than move away and take wide shot then again the follow the character then move ahead and go to other characters and take their mid-close, again I had to slowly move behind and take wide shot and at end it by an extreme close up.
In the day two of the shoot we have some more varieties of shot like we took some over the shoulder an in one scene we took a top shot where I had climbed the ladder and was shooting.
The last scene we of the day I needed a bit yellow because the natural lighting of the parking lot was bright white so I covered the light with a yellow tinted translucent paper.
the shoot started at 12 pm and ended around 8-830pm

Week 14 Final Preperations
This week we were dealing with some minor problems like checking all the details and assuring everyone and place is reserved for the next week shoot. then we made a list full of props and costumes we would need on the shoot. so we dived all the objects into two parts what we have and what we need to buy
Things we already had been- cups, bags, pathanis, posters and things we would need to make tea, tray, tables, and chairs. in (we need to buy) list we had to buy the lights, reflectors, gas stove, clap, cigarette box and cigarette, costume- 2 different shots, 2 wife beaters, a pair of white trousers and white shirt, markers and a cloth.
First, we gathered all the things from (we already have) list and ticked them all, though we could not get props from the other list as we didn't have much time as we had class exams.
Though for costumes we were not sure that where do we get them from so we called the costume designer of the short film series to ask her where do we get the costumes and then she gave us the number of the place called Jems costume walla. for others costumes we decided to buy them from the small shops near the Ghatkopar station as that would be cost effective and also look, realist, as seen most of the gang people who all are not so known were clothes from such shops.
Aparna ma’am’s lecture as we had our exams for other subjects and also she was busy with the exam work.

Week 13 Almost There
We were now ready with the script, cast and the locations so this week we had to finalize the dates and make a proper schedule for the cast which includes the reporting time, rehearsal time, time when shoot starts, break time and time when the shoot ends. Now we made a whats-app group to inform and share details with everyone like time, day, date and address.
I couldn't attend Aparna ma’am's lecture I had gone to her for an extra lecture where she cleared my doubts about collective identity.. This week Nikhil also narrated the script to shritej sir just to learn how a script is been narrated so it would be later easy for us to narrate it to the actors, I had to present the power point presentation to shritej sir and Suverna ma’am. I also started brushing up on my camera skills

Week 12 Shoot??
This week was important as we had to finalize the location for the shoot. So we shortlisted some places in our surroundings which were falling into the character the kind of location required for our trailers.
So for two to three days we had gone to places after the school for the permission of the shoot, we had gone from Ghatkopar East to Bhandup west but we were not successful to get the permission for the shoot and mainly most of the owners were not agreeing as we needed the same place for two days and they weren't ready to keep the location empty and in the same condition for two days, It was frustrating as everyone was disagreeing and whoever agreed asked for some of the other amounts.
Now, we just had one option, that was Nikhil’s place, I had not seen the place before but after the reccee, it was more then what we had desired. It had probably everything we needed, for example, it had dim lighting and most of the space was a bit dark, it had segments so we could create some small sets like Asthana or our main character’s cabin, which was a small segment near the meter room. there was an empty parking segment though it had no lights and even sunlight couldn’t reach I planned that we would get artificial lights and then we could use that space to create a small set of the kitchen where our protagonist is making tea.
Then Nikhil had to just take a letter from the school and then we were done with our locations.

Week 11 Casting, Pre-prodcution
This week Nikhil was done with a master break down and he in additional brought the script, also I had finished the power point presentation. there were some minor changes in the script as well as in the power point presentation. so we had to rectify our work till next lecturer and as soon as we were done with this we started noting all the characters and looking for the actors though in the next class we decided to hire mostly professional actors and not enthusiasts or school faculty.
So sir referenced to us actors from the industry, who we had also worked with during our internship. An advantage of this was that we knew the caliber of the actor and the output to would be close to what we desire.

Week 9 Drafting Trailers
This week we continued the discussion with Aparna ma'am about the genre, we also discussed some past papers with ma’am, Ma’am also sent us a mail which was regarding the paper pattern. this mail was presenting the detailed structure of prompts from both of the questions. this mail also had a detailed description of section A-Collective identity and it questions on the youth’s nurturing. From section B it had answers from the pas.t. the mail helped a lot understanding the questions.
Ma’am also helped us by giving her own example like what movie best fits for what and how to write an answer, she also gave us a task to do at home which was to write a sample answer on the question base on the genre.
For Shritej sir’s class I had some ideas for the story and so we discussed some ideas and the first draft of the screenplay. after some discussion, we combined all our ideas and in the screenplay.
In the next class we were going through the second draft though we all realized that the story wasn't funny it seemed as we were forcefully adding comedy to it, so we wanted to change the story but not the genre as all the previous batches were on the dark side like horror or thriller so we decided to stick to comedy and so we started developing the story on it.
As we had to make 2 trailers we thought that one trailer would be different from the other for example one would be realistic then the other would be with a touch of comedy this would show the different emotions in our story though we had decided to make it comedy there would be some percentage of thriller as well.

Week 8 Brainstorming
This week I was absent during Shritej sir’s lecturers, so I had a talk with Nikhil about the progress in this week so he told me that Aparna ma’am and Nikhil discussed the question B of option A in which we have to choose our AS or A2 work and evaluate it with reference to Genre, Narrative, Representation, Audience or Media Language. they also discussed the genre of our AS film and how did we reach the conclusion that we are going for a crime thriller, and what did we do to establish the genre in your film, for example, the conventional lighting or camera shots or costumes, music, etc. so as a cinematographer I kept the lighting really bright to create a sense of unconventionality as every thriller movie is dark or on those lines we even took some low angle shorts to create importance for the character in the viewers mind and also low angle shots are found conventional in this genre.
Though this time was planning to add more close-ups and less of low angle perspective because we have comedy as the genre of our story and close-ups make it effective
She also told us that it's really important to know what the genre represents and what kind of expectation it's going to build in the viewer’s mind. She also showed us a power point presentation based on the prompts and theories.
This time in Shritej sir’s lectures we jumped out of the box of confusion and stepped on the right path, Nikhil came up with an idea and it was pretty nice so we three discussed and about and got an outline of the story, also Shritej Sir suggested some movies to watch like enter The Void, Irreversible and Requiem For A Dream for inspiration.
In our second class, we came up with a story. Nikhil was told to write a screenplay for this story and I was told to write the blog for this week.

Week 7 Story_Screenplay
This week we had more discussion on the story based on what we had discuses last week and we had come to a conclusion that had washroom as its main idea though it was scrapped as it was an idea with a lot of thoughts and it was combining all the thoughts and making a story, then we decided that we’ll first decide the genre which was serialism so we then discussed movies by Anurag Kashyap and Luis Bunuel as they make movies based on this genre so we started thinking on those parameters .

I couldn't attend any media lectures this week as I was absent due to viral fever but Nikhil informed me that in the class Aparna ma’am taught him theories and their movie examples. Ma’am also asked to get our list of movies next week.
in Shritej sir’s class, he learned masking tool. We desaturated the close up of a face and added color to body parts and try and match it to the original the original image.
As I could not attend the lectures I clicked some pictures in natural lighting. This was to practice camera handling and also wanted to see if I couldn't get artificial lighting on the set that how would I shoot with natural light

Week 4 Internship
Day 1
As decided in the previous week our parents were called to get an explanation about what the internship is about after the meeting we got permission from our parents to intern.
After that Shritej sir gave us a brief explanation about what do we have to do there like I would be assigned to the group of DOP and Cinematographers and Nikhil would be in the group of directors and what kind of behavior is expected from us like no talking during the set and no roaming around for no reason. He also briefed us about the cast and timeline, he then narrated us the scripts of 5 short films one by one.
He then informed us about the expenses and things we would require for the shoot days like Food, Mosquito Repellent ......
Day 2
As decided me and Nikhil met around 4;30 near Nikhil’s place and than Nikhil's Dad had come to drop us. Meeting time was 5:30 though we reached around 5:25; still, we weren't the first one as Shritej sie and another crew member had reached there before. All the crew members had arrived around 7-7: 30. we then settled in the bus waiting for the director and the DOP everyone looked sleepy but we were trying to stay awake by talking to each other or eating.
We were introduced to the directional team while we were waiting for the director and the DOP. Director and the DOP arrived till 8 - 8:30 and then we left for Alibaug. In the bus, Shritej sir introduce me Nikhil to the direction team and other team members.
Around 2 we reached, we kept our bags in one of the bungalows. We were given snacks and after having lunch all of us moved to another bungalow where the shoot for 1st 2 shot films would take place, as soon we reach there me and Nikhil were assigned our jobs I was given a camera by one of the ADs to click still throughout the shoot while Nikhil was with direction team.
Then came our director and as soon as he came everyone started working actors were given the script I was clicking the pics and actors were then doing the rehearsals while the director was doing shot division. Our DOP came a bit late though as soon as he came he joined the shot division. it was exciting looking at professionals working.
As soon as the shot division was done, cinematographers team started lighting up the room by a different kind of tube light As the film was one take everything depends on the camera movement so in one of the scene actor had to wear different clothes when the camera moves away focusing on something else and until that time the actor changes its clothes. In one of the scenes the production (Set Design) of the set has to change, so what I and the production design team did was we were hiding me the kitchen and as soon as we got a clue we ran out changed everything and came back in the kitchen. There were several retakes as director could not find up to the mark he wanted. Then we had a break for having lunch and after that, we again started with takes, Finally, the 6th or 7th take was final.
After that, we had a long break because it was not dark enough so meanwhile me Nikhil has snacks and read the script of the next short film we were part of, we also had a chat with some ADs. After some time cinematographer and the DOP started lighting the room, I clicked some stills and then I had gone to talk to our art director of the film. I had a nice chat with him regarding the camera and how lighting works, I knew that this is going to help me in my own project. meanwhile, the art department also started setting the set, I also helped them setting stuff as the Art director wanted. once everything was done we finally commenced with the second short film of the day.
There were some retakes because of the camera movement as the camera was set on the track. and between every take, there was makeup touch up the actress. After all the external shots when we moved in the makeup for the maniac started. Meanwhile, the internal shots were taking place I was taking stills hiding from the camera . an hour past the midnight we had our break.after the break we were awake for some time though we felt sleepy so in the midway of the shoot we were allotted a room and we slept there. I woke up around 4:30 when I say the final take of the film took place. and then we all were asked to move to the bungalow where our bags were kept for sleeping as we had a break from 6 to 11.
Day 3
In the morning when we shifted we were asked to sleep or rest even though we slept for 3 hours rough we still needed some sleep so we tried to sleep again though I woke up around 8-8:30, I could not sleep much so, I woke up and checked for others. Nikhil woke up around 10:30 and then we had our snacks.
After we were done eating we went to the previous location to meet Shritej sir. Here we came to know that the next two shorts were at the location where we slept so we started helping in the shifting. As due to some hassles the shoot was delayed, we got to know also what kind of state of mind everyone has due to shoot problems and how they stayed calm n composed in an overall scenario as the delay caused was no one's fault.
The Producer wanted to shoot an interview with the cast and get a picture clicked with the main crew.. We shot on the DSLR.
It was 5 in the evening when everyone started working DOP and light boys on lighting, direction on shot division, us on reading the script, the art director is on making props, and makeup artists on props made by the art director as the actors had not arrived. After an hour, the actors started arriving one by one. I and Nikhil were asked to see and take care of what they need so first we provided them with the scripts and water and then makeup artist went to their room and so did the costume designer.
During this, a disaster took place, the generator van which was supposed to give electricity for the shoot was stuck in a muddy pot whole. It was not able to come out, and every time the driver tried to hit the accelerator, it just kept going deeper in it. Everyone worked off for almost for an hour or more. So for that period of time, everyone stopped working and came out to see and help. So first we tied the rope to the van all the men started pulling it out through the van was there at the same place only thing that came out was its part where we tied the rope, finally, we had to use our travel bus to pull it out.
Now everyone was back to work and the rehearsals were done and everyone was ready with their apparatus I was clicking stills and I learned something new from the DOP that was if the lighting of the place is good then u didn't need to edit. So always visualize what would your final output looks like. There was some last minutes decision taken for the shots like there was a long tracking shot and Os of the character opposite to the protagonists and some more.
I and Nikhil constantly asked a question about things and how are they going to impact the film. After that we were assigned a task which was to maintain the continuity of the scenes like there was a reflection of the water in the swimming pool on the wall so to maintain the continuity we had to make ripples in the pool by our hands or we had to make sure that things in the frame were at the same place in the next shot.
We also took small interview kind of a thing with the makeup artists and costume designer who works on a severed head which was bleeding, made of plastic by or Art director. We asked them about their experience and how do they feel about their profession.
This experience was too exciting as we have seen things like these on the internet or television, for example, lights were hung on the ceiling or an actual set up of cameras with different lenses, we learned a lot throughout both the days. Experiencing the energy that was flowing on the sets was amazing and also getting to know the industry professionals was a great experience
It was an intense and hectic situation during the shooting though everyone was chilled or relaxed. During the break time, I Nikhil and the cinematographer were watching the semi-final match of the world cup. This was also because we gelled very well with everyone on the set. We this I was learning how to keep yourself very calm while working and no matter what “NOT GETTING IN ANY PANIC MODE”
After break everyone started the work again.. it was a 2′o clock of the night we were still shooting and was on our feet it was straight 50 hours of shoot and I really don’t know what was it that was making us still stand on our feet.
After that, we again went back and clicked some stills and Nikhil helped the direction team. There was this character that played the role of a cannibal and we wanted to see his make up as it’s exciting to see professionals makeup artists working though we could not as we were sleeping.
It was morning 6 when the last scenes, last shot was shot.
Day 4
The shoot ended around 6:30 and the cast left. we all rested for hardly half n hour and then I and Nikhil started reading the script for the next short film and director and DOP were doing the short division, costume designer was dressing the cast and the makeup artists was making blood as one of the scenes from this short film was a death of a girl by stabbing, actually the story of this short film is that a woman pranks her husband by playing dead to distract from the fact that she bought a very expensive phone. and the USP of this short film is that half of the film was shown in one take as if it is been done on iPhone.
As it was our fourth day we had to wrap up by 1 pm anyhow. Everyone was on their toes and I could feel the energy and adrenaline even much higher. everyone was thinking about acting and reacting much quicker even though no one slept for almost 2 days at a stretch. Shritej Sir was right. The energy on the set makes you work even better. Finally, with a vertigo shot, we were done. we packed our bags took the bus and don't know when we reached Mumbai. we were so tired that we didn't realize when Mumbai came.
To sum up, It was one of the greatest experience of my life and I am very much thankful to Shritej sir and my school for getting me this opportunity.
