If you see the title of a piece of art listed like this:

[name of artist] ([year]–[year]) - [name of work]

... then the years indicate when the artist lived.

Conversely, here:

[name of artist] - [name of work] ([year]–[year])

... the years indicate when that specific piece was created, which may be a range if the piece's exact date of creation is unknown.

Getting this the wrong way 'round can have very funny implications.
