My grandfather, Samuel Schalkowsky was a Holocaust survivor. He was in Auschwitz. He witnessed the systematic killing of millions of his people. He saw how his home country painted all of it as self defense against the "evil and corruptive" Jews.
Unfortunately, he is not around today to voice his opinions, but I imagine if he was, he would be disgusted by the inhumanity of the Israeli government’s actions. The murder of millions of children, some less than a year old, and the way worldwide news DENY wrongdoing, saying things like “not all babies are innocent” just to sway people to their favor.
I may not be the most well informed, and I certainly do not speak for my grandfather, but I see history repeating itself, only this time no one’s even trying to cover it up. There are videos and pictures of soldiers posing over the bodies of innocent people they murdered.
The kidnapping of Israeli citizens was a terrible act, and I pray for those who’ve lost family or been taken themselves. Yet Israel continues to decline offers for a return of the captives, as it would constitute a complete ceasefire on their part.
I am disgusted by the lack of shame. Israel has a way to get the hostages back, but they refuse to stop murdering innocent people.
My family would hate for me to invoke my grandfather's name for this due to our background, but I don’t care. I didn’t know him well, but I know he believed in peace. I can’t imagine what it would be like for him to watch his people shelling cities full of civilians on live television.
To have survived what he did, and then watch Israel put the same hate he experienced onto thousands more innocents. I can't imagine he would be anything but angry.
Like I said, Samuel Schalkowsky is not with us today. He can't be angry at the people doing this. But I can. And I am.
