im not saying office jobs aren’t bad in some ways but its always very telling when people treat it like the WORST job at the bottom of the rung…because they have never had to face manual labor as a real option they would ever be forced to take.

Please remember that *NOTHING* in this world is obvious or intuitive to everyone. NOTHING.
Don't blame yourself if you missed something that everyone else seems to think was blatantly obvious. And don't talk to people like there's something wrong with them if they overlook something that you think is blatantly obvious.

Video
Probably reading too much into it but this video has always filled me with such indescribable longing. Like the climax of a sports movie where everyone else has turned away from our hero facing impossibly long odds except for the one die hard with his fists clenched whispering, “come on you son of a bitch, you can do it.” But “it” in this case is outrunning the toxic nightmare of urban sprawl. I want him to run so fast he breaks free from the things we’ve done to this world. I want him to clear the city limits and find the forests that don’t really exist anymore. To gambol and forage and rest in primeval bliss. I want him to make it.

constantly making airy offhand comments to my preferred younger son about how he’s next in line for the throne after his brother but he still hasn’t killed my detested firstborn for me. kids these days have no fucking initiative.

there's a fascinating type of post on this site which boils down to "what if, instead of being cliché, such-and-such work of fiction instead dodged all genre tropes in a way that instead made it really boring"

🔥 One More Day?
One More Day is a really interesting artefact for me because of the question it raises about whether a Big-two comic can be good in-and-of-itself or if that question is inherently bound up in the impact it has on the shared universe. Reading the thing even as a teenager it came across to me as something competent and thoughtful that JMS was being made to write at editorial gunpoint; I was under no illusions that this stupid fucking beat was in any way his idea and as a consequence it didn't detract from my enjoyment of the rest of the run. It's "good" when taking into account the out-of-universe constraints driving it, the ruminations on Peter's character that amount to an argument for why the story's own existence is a terrible idea. It's 'bad' in terms of the basic concept, and the impact it has on the setting as a whole, and the fact I've still gotta talk about it, what, 18 years later? Christ. This is actually a microcosm of my problem with the Civil War event as a whole; as an object-in-itself, the Millar/Nivens 7-issue miniseries is dumb but high-effort popcorn fun, many of the tie-in minis are downright transcendent, and many of the stories it enabled up through Siege are genuinely interesting; but the event, if taken seriously from a worldbuilding perspective, should have permanently annihilated the ability for any of these people to ever work together or even look each other in the eye, ever again. There should have been no going back. And so the entire project is dragged down by the fact that inevitably you have to call that bluff, and then there, is, in fact, some going back.

"I don't want to read this" is totally valid.
"This is disgusting to me" is totally valid.
"I don't want to read this because it is disgusting to me" is totally valid.
"I don't think anyone should be allowed to read or write this because it is disgusting to me" is authoritarian.

In America, poverty is a death sentence and Donald Trump and the Republican Party are slowly repealing The Affordable Care Act, making healthcare unaffordable once again. We need Medicare For All, and we need it now. No one should die because they can’t afford overpriced, profitized healthcare.
These are some of the people who needlessly died, just because they couldn’t afford healthcare. Unfortunately, as long as conservative politicians control congress, they won’t be the last.
