"Yeah, the galaxy is scary and dangerous, but… everywhere we went, even the worst places, there were good people, too." WHAT A GOOD STAR WARS LINE. The galaxy should be a scary and dangerous place, but ultimately about hope and the light that exists in it. Even if it's just a pinprick of light, a single flame against a galaxy of darkness, that goodness matters. That hope in a terrible time and place matters. Skeleton Crew was a series that was very much Goonies In Space and it stuck to that feeling, but it didn't forget that Star Wars is a story about hope and kindness and caring about other people, even when it's not beneficial to you personally. The people who helped those kids, not because they were personally invested in them, but simply because they cared about other people, that is what the underlying message of a Star Wars show should be about. Skeleton Crew understood the Star Wars assignment.

Coming out once again to beg you, please watch Skeleton Crew. This show is so good. It's so much fun, paying homage to not just previous Star Wars but also Goonies, Peter Pan, Treasure Island. I am truly impressed by its ability to stick pretty faithfully to the child-adventure formula while still throwing in twists and turns most won't see coming. The humor is great, the performances are great, Nick Frost plays a Droid with a silly pirate voice, what more do you want?

I'm re-reading the Animorphs books for the first time since 2001 and this scene from The Hork-Bajir Chronicles is just the latest of many moments that took my breath away.
"Either they will learn to fight and hurt and kill, or they will learn to be slaves. Both will destroy them."

28 Days Later is a very solid 'standard' zombie story that wrote a lot of the modern rules for that type of story. 28 Weeks Later pulls the Alien to Aliens sequel technique of adding a bunch of military stuff and blurring the line between action and horror. Much like Aliens, it fucking rules. The opening scene is rightfully remembered as one of the best opening sequences in the history of horror films but upon re-watching 28 Weeks Later for the first time in 17 years I was surprised by how much the entire film not only holds up but feels interesting in the crowded sub-genre. OK, so its still a very 2007 film. There is more than a little bit of early 2000s style 'shaky cam' which your millage may vary on. IMO it works a lot better for horror than action (Bourne 2 and 3 were unwatchable) but still isn't great. But also, 28 Weeks Later is so much about the anxieties of carrying out the 'War on Terror'. Putting imagery we saw on the news at the time into an empty London. The American occupation is for pretty much the best reason possible yet the film is full of 'are we the baddies?' moments. The Surveillance state they build is creepy, dystopian, and in many ways more relevant now than when it was released. The Army's clean up efforts in the back half of the film, while justified, are still monstrous to be on the receiving end of. Its terrifying when the rage virus ripples through a panicking crowd. Its equally terrifying when the rooftop snipers start picking people off. A nasty adrenaline rush of a film with some solid subtext. Still one of the better films to shoot action scenes like they were horror scenes.
