Ultimate Good Omens Fic Recommendations

I read the entire AO3 archive. I started sometime in November 2018 and read all the way back to 1999. I did not read every story, but I tried. Here are my recommendations.

(Most Good Omens fic is very good, which is why I bothered to read the entire archive instead of just scrolling through the first few pages, despairing, and giving up, which is what I usually do when I read fanfiction. So if your fic is not here, congratulations! I probably still read it and liked it but this post is already very long.)

My Absolute Top Favorites

Deus Ex Machina by clockwork_spider -  Angels really aren’t the most sentimental bunch, so when Crowley was escorted back to Hell, Aziraphale’s initial reaction was to do nothing. But let it be known that God moves in ineffable ways.

Tryst On a Hot Church Roof by Macdicilla -  Crowley has some fantasies. Aziraphale encourages him to explore them and not to be embarrassed. Neither of them can really take roleplay seriously but they still have a good time.

Re-Recalled by Jennistar -  Halfway through an argument, Aziraphale gets accidentally discorporated and doesn’t come back. Crowley does the sensible thing and panics.

The love that dare not speak its name by Lunasong365, sous_le_saule  -  London, late nineteenth century. Aziraphale finds that time moves slowly while waiting for Crowley to wake up. Meeting Oscar Wilde should break the monotony. But perhaps it will bring more of a change than the angel anticipated…

Safe Haven by JAMoczo -  A remix of Prodigal Son: January 1945; Aziraphale has a crisis of Faith.

She knows. Pamela takes one long look at him, smiles, and tells him as much.

She doesn’t say Cas. She doesn’t say that he’s in love with a goddamn wavelength of celestial intent. She doesn’t say that he’s head over heels for a friggin’ angel—a nerdy little blue-eyed dork who can smash doors open and put Dean up against the wall at a moment’s notice.

Instead, she tells him that he’s been pining for years and years.

For someone whom he can’t ever have.

Pamela might not have been real, but Billie’s book is.

Dean reads it. Dean flips through pages and pages of his own future, reads about fighting alongside Sam, fighting alongside Cas, and then his fingers halt because the book says that Dean tells him.

He tells Cas that he loves him and Cas loves him back.

And for a moment, Dean’s lost in this reverie. For a moment, Dean’s alive and breathing as if he’s finally free for the first goddamn time, but then he turns some more pages and the book tells him something else, too.

The book tells him that Dean confesses and Michael loses his war and kills Cas in a fit of anger, and Dean lives for another ten years before a failing liver does him in, too.

“I didn’t think you had the guts,” Michael taunts, fingers curling around Cas’ neck. “But I’m glad that I was wrong, Dean. Because now I can take Castiel away from you, just as you took everything away from me.”

Cas can tell that he’s acting strangely. Cas knows him like the back of his own hand so even when Dean tries to distance himself from him, Cas follows him like an imprinted baby duck.

“You are irritating me,” Cas growls in the hallway, taking Dean by surprise just when Dean’s starting to think that it’s safe again. Cas pins him up against the wall, narrows his blue eyes and glares at him until Dean melts in his grip. “You are always slinking away now, Dean, and I will not have it.”

Dean clenches his teeth together and shuts his stupid mouth. Dean does that because they’re too close and his only desperate thought is kissing the life out of him and Dean knows that he can’t do that either.

So, “You can’t have it,” Dean tells him furiously because maybe his goddamn mouth isn’t sealed as tightly as he thought it was. “Cas, you can’t have me like you want so quit following me around.”

Cas blinks.

Cas drops his hand from Dean’s shoulder and doesn’t say a single word.

A week later, quietly, quietly, Cas pads into his room.

He’s holding Billie’s book.

“I read it,” he says.

He doesn’t understand what’s happening until it’s too late. Nigel doesn’t understand. He feels it like a second skin settling over him, to start with, but uneasiness turns to panic when something heavy settles over his chest.

When he realises what’s happening, who he is, what it is, his heart stops, his breath catches in his throat.

Or it would have, if he had control over his body anymore.

He rages against it, trying to free himself. Fights hard and furious, scrambling for freedom, scrambling for anything.
