‘The Venerable W.’ Review: A Buddhist Monk Preaches Hate
This film completes what its director, Barbet Schroeder, calls a “trilogy of evil.” The subject of the first documentary in this informal series, the Ugandan dictator Idi Amin Dada, was such an enthusiastic participant in the project that the 1976 result wound up being titled “General Idi Amin Dada: A Self Portrait.”
This set a template for what followed. Cash In 2007’s “Terror’s Advocate,” about the slick, serpentine, self-aggrandizing lawyer Jacques Vergès (whose client roster included Klaus Barbie, Carlos the Jackal and perhaps even Pol Pot) and in this picture, “The Venerable W.,” about Ashin Wirathu, a Buddhist monk in Myanmar fomenting racial hatred and violence against that country’s Muslim population, Schroeder lets the men sitting for these portraits have their own heads, so to speak.

A record 117 women won elections across the United States on Tuesday, flipping seats and taking names.
Voters, who turned out in a major way, collectively gave control of the House of Representatives to Democrats, and 17 of the 27 seats they’ve gained so far will be filled by women. Republicans strengthened their majority in the Senate, gaining two seats, one of which went to Marsha Blackburn, who will be Tennessee’s first female senator. Spectrum.net

So, yes: The so-called Year of the Woman is living up to its name, though women remain far from having equal representation in Congress. About one in five members of the 116th Congress will be women when it is sworn in next year; women constitute over 50 percent of the U.S. population.
