Her eyes flew open as the loud ringtone of her phone shattered the early morning silence. Heart racing, she quickly threw the heavy blankets off her body and swung her legs over the edge of the bed. The cool air hit her skin, urging her to move faster.

She dashed across her cluttered room, her mind racing with thoughts of what could be so urgent. Reaching her closet, she rifled through the hangers and settled on a pair of well-worn jeans that felt comfortable against her skin. Next, she grabbed a loose-fitting shirt adorned with a faded logo of a band she liked but couldn’t recall the name of.

Once dressed, she grabbed her well-used book bag, which was stuffed with notes and textbooks, and her camera bag, filled with her favorite lens and a spare battery. With one last glance around to make sure she hadn’t forgotten anything, she bolted out the door.

“Sorry, Paige, my alarm didn’t go off,” the girl said, her voice tinged with embarrassment as she hurriedly adjusted her tousled hair.

“Ah, it’s fine,” Paige replied with a reassuring smile, glancing over at her friend. She watched as the girl slipped out of her old shirt, which was faded and slightly rumpled, and pulled on a fresh one. Paige could feel the butterflies in her stomach as she looked quickly away from the brunette girl

waiting in line at the ice cream shop, Alice couldn't stop staring at the blonde girl. “What can I get you ladies today?” “the same as always John” Paige says “Oh yes the strawberry ice cream, there you go, and of course one spoon for two.”

“Paige, are you leaving for a game soon?” “Mhm, I am, actually. I’ll be heading out in just five days, Ali.”

Alice averted her gaze from Paige, determined not to let her blue eyes catch a glimpse of the unshed tears shimmering in her own. She loved it when Paige played basketball but she hated when she was away.

“Hey, look at me,” Paige gently urged, as she reached out with her hand to softly cup the girl's cheek. Her touch was warm and reassuring, a familiar comfort that Alice desperately needed in that moment.

Paige had always had an uncanny ability to sense what Alice was feeling, an unspoken bond between them that didn't require words. “Please don't cry,” she continued, her voice filled with empathy. “You know I can call you anytime while I'm away. We can still talk, and I’ll be right there with you, even from a distance.”

“hey listen it's Billy Joel ,” Paige says to Alice while grabbing the volume knob, and turning it up. The sound of Billy Joel's voice singing “Uptown Girl”
