thank you for everything, farewell.
phos and shinsha let each other go, one by loss of self and the other by choice. while phos lost their way and memories of their past, shinsha was anchored by their promise and clung to hope mirrored by the unfinished encyclopedia. i wondered how hard it was to sever themself from past lingering feelings associated with the worn out notebook that phos left behind. 🥺
before phos shifted their priorities, they were driven by their desire to help shinsha find a purpose, which gave them a future to believe in. both had their ways of expressing how they meant to each other; it was far from perfect but meaningful to these two alone... this is a piece meant to parallel with an older work! 😭
they are making me yell per usual...

Jujutsu Kaisen Binge Tour Pt. 1: Hidden Inventory and Jujutsu Kaisen 0.
With the Jujutsu Kaisen manga on hiatus until January 17 and Season 2 of the JJK anime over, I figured now would be as good a time as any to binge watch the series and play catch up. However, I decided to take a different approach and watch the series in chronological order. And thus, we begin part one of the Jujutsu Kaisen Binge Tour with the Hidden Inventory Arc and Jujutsu Kaisen 0 (AKA, the Cursed Child Arc), both of which take place prior to the events of the manga.
In this part, we'll delve into Gojo's past and the events that shaped him into the man he is today, including his tragic bromance friendship with Geto and Geto's own descent into villainy. We'll also see how Gojo met Yuta Okkotsu and see Yuta's own journey to becoming a Jujutsu sorcerer.
Note: From here to the Shibuya Incident Arc, I will be going by just the anime, so feel free to point out any differences between the anime and manga that I miss.
So without further ado... Let's-a go!
(Spoilers under the cut)
Hidden Inventory Arc:
I honestly consider the Hidden Inventory Arc to be one of Jujutsu Kaisen's best arcs. I really enjoyed watching Gojo go from a cocky, arrogant brat to a more nobler person, and I found his big brother/little sister dynamic with Riko to be adorable.
And regarding Riko. At first, I thought she was going to be one of those annoying, bratty characters, but she quickly grew on me as the arc went on. I loved the little montage of her and the gang spending time together as well as her relationship with Misato, which makes her death hit all the more harder. Just when she finally decides to live for herself and not become part of Tengen, her new life is cruelly cut short by Toji.
Speaking of Toji, despite his brief screentime, he's a fantastic antagonist. He's powerful, cunning, and his fights with both Gojo and Geto were the best parts of the arc. I just wish that his backstory was explored more in the story rather than kept in supplementary material as I think he's more complex than people think (I'll get into this more in depth when we get to the Shibuya Incident Arc).
And finally there's Geto, oh dear Geto. His fall from grace is beautiful to behold as it is tragic to witness and all throughout, you wish that either Shoko or Gojo would just reach out and talk to him. The only one to do so was Yuki Tsukumo.
The most fascinating part about Geto's arc is the contrast with Gojo. Their defeat at the hands of Toji and Riko's death affected both of them greatly, but in completely opposite directions. For Gojo, he found enlightenment and was able to grow as both a Jujutsu Sorcerer and a person. For Geto, losing to a "filthy monkey who can't even use Jujutsu", seeing the Time Association members callously cheer Riko's death, the death of Yu Haibara, and his own feelings of isolation and inadequacy as Gojo grew in strength caused him to spiral into a really dark place. And while he tried his hardest to stay true to his morals, seeing Nanako and Mimiko, two innocent girls cruelly abused for being able to use Jujutsu was the final straw that pushed him over the edge into complete villainy.
If I had one complaint about the arc, I wished that some moments such as Gojo and Geto rescuing Misato weren't kept offscreen. I get it was done likely for pacing and to show the vast gap in power between Gojo and Geto compared to everyone else, but I would've like to see it play out in real time.
Still, this was a great arc.
Jujutsu Kaisen 0:
This is the prequel to the manga and the Jujutsu Kaisen's first, and so far, only movie. And it was a great film from start to finish. While some might find Yuta a bit bland compared to Yuji, but I feel he's a good protagonist in his own right. I enjoyed watching him grow from timid boy to competent Jujutsu Sorcerer and I really liked his interactions with Panda, Toge, and especially Maki.
A particularly favorite scene of was Maki opening up to Yuta about her past with the Zenin clan and her desire to one day destroy it from within, with Yuta calling her strong and determined. Maki, who has been routinely belittled and abused by the Zenin clan for her lack of Cursed Energy, is so stunned by Yuta's sincere kindness that she tries to play it cool, not wanting to believe someone would accept her for who she is. It's heartwarming and heartbreaking and it makes what she does later in the series all the more satisfying (I won't spoil it for those who haven't read it yet). And yes, if anyone asks, it was this scene that made me ship the two together (Sorry Rika).
Having said all that, I'm really disappointed we didn't get to see Yuta and Panda do a mission together. I guess the writers felt there wasn't enough room in the film for one, but I would've loved to see Panda and Yuta fighting together.
And of course, we can't talk about this film without bringing up its main antagonist, Suguru Geto. Geto is a great villain due to the amount of emotions he brings out of you. For one, seeing him after watching the Hidden Inventory Arc hurts because you can see how far he's fallen from the noble, idealistic Jujutsu sorcerer he once was. However, you can still see bits of the old Geto in him with the way he interacts with Nanako and Mimiko (which makes what happens to them in the Shibuya Arc all the more tragic. Damn you, Sukuna), him sitting on a window still reminiscing on his last meeting with Gojo, or the way he cries tears of joy seeing Panda, Toge, and Maki risk their lives to protect Yuta. Also, he's so over the top and dramatic that he's really enjoyable to watch, and his fight scenes are some of the films best moments. Plus you can make a drinking game out of how many times he says the word "monkey".
And then there's his death scene and the way it parallels Toji's death. Like Toji, he underestimated his opponent and his pride wound up costing him an arm. And he ultimately meets his end at the hands of Satoru Gojo after exchanging some final words. How poetic considering it was his defeat at Toji's hands that kickstarted his descent into villainy.
One nitpick I have about the film is that aside from Miguel, Nanako and Mimiko, the other members of Geto's "family" were that interesting to me. That we don't see them in action and they get so little screentime doesn't help. Still, this was a great film.
Closing Thoughts (Spoilers for Shinjuku Showdown Arc):
Watching both the Hidden Inventory Arc and JJK 0 makes me even more bitter at Gojo's death. Not so much the death itself, it had to happen sooner or later, but how.. hollow and unsatisfying it felt. If Gojo had managed to weaken Sukuna and give the heroes a fighting chance before he died, it would bother me so much, but he didn't even do that. Sukuna was not only able to squeeze out a victory using another's Cursed Technique, but he now has the ability to slash through space itself, and is in his original form and is even more powerful now. So far, the only losses he suffered are that he can't use the Ten Shadows anymore and he lost his Cursed Tool. It just feels like Gojo died a complete failure.
And it's why I'm so mad to see Gojo say he has no regrets. After everything he's been through, he should have plenty of regrets. He couldn't protect Riko, he couldn't save his best friend Geto from spiraling, he didn't get to confront Kenjaku, the monster who stole said best friend's body, and he couldn't save Megumi from being possessed by Sukuna. Again, he should have plenty of regrets.
And I really take offense to Gege, through Nanami, trying to portray Gojo as someone who only cared about fighting when that completely contradicts everything we see about Gojo. Yes, he loves to test his strength against strong opponents but that's not the entirety of his character. We see the way he cares about others even before his character development. How he extended their vacation in Okinawa not just to run out the bounty on Riko's head, but to give her more time to enjoy her life before she merges with Tengen and how he and Geto promised to support Riko if she decides not to go through with the merger even if that meant going against Tengen. With Yuta, he gave the guy a second chance at life, encouraged him to interact with the other students, taught him to be a Jujutsu Sorcerer. He wasn't perfect, obviously, but he's not the battle-hungry maniac Gege tried to portray him as.
But I've already spoken about Chapter 236 at length and I don't feel like beating a dead horse. So with this, Part 1 of the Jujutsu Kaisen Binge Tour comes to a close. Next comes part 2 where we meet the other main protagonist, Yuji Itadori. He seems like a nice chap. I hope nothing bad happens to him.

One day you think: I want to die. And then you think, very quietly, actually I want a coffee. I want a nap. A sandwich. A book. And I want to die turns day by day into I want to go home, I want to walk in the woods, I want to see my friends, I want to sit in the sun. I want a cleaner room, I want a better job, I want to live somewhere else, I want to live.
