How do you feel about hanahaki AUs? either for lawlight or meronia.
I'm a complete SUCKER for almost any type of AU because I have constant "What If" brain, but Hanahaki is one that I adore in a very special way :3
I'm someone who very much enjoys one-sided attraction—REAL one-sided attraction, not misunderstandings and poor communication dolled up as it—so Hanahaki has a very special place in my heart 💕 I love the angst and heartbreak and grayed lines or morality it presents: if you know someone is in love with you and is dying because you don't love them back, does that make you responsible for their death? Are you morally obligated to try your hardest to fall in love with this person to save their life? Is the person who loves you morally obligated to keep it to themselves, so as to not burden you with the choice? Should they suffer in silence just so you can have peace of mind?
OH and the drama potential of removing the flowers removing memories?? I love that shit. Imagine going about your day and all of a sudden someone you're close to has no memory of you. Imagine becoming half of the person you were because you removed all your memories of someone you've grown up with since childhood.
Imagine going through all that just to fall in love with them again :) And getting Hanahaki again :)
Plus,,,,the flower symbolism?? Top tier shit on God. I love flower symbolism, I have a whole chart for it in my google docs like—if there's ever a flower in my fics or art there's meaning to it. I love the subtlety of it 💖
As for Hanahaki in relation to Lawlight and Meronia...I have several fics bookmarked, is all I'm gonna tell you. My preferred people to catch it are Near and Light :) Just because I see Light as a creature of eternal self-denial and Near as a creature of eternal quiet desperation.
Light would rip the roots out, again and again, without hesitation, only to find them growing back in the grooves of the ones that came before. He would never give into it and he would never be able to get rid of it completely. The fun part here is whether or not L would notice.
Near would nurse it quietly. He'd find it beautiful, proof of his own humanity, and he'd either attempt to persuade Mello to love him to the point that it drives them both mad or he'd die quietly without ever speaking a word of it to anyone. It's a fifty-fifty toss up with him. He wouldn't even consider getting rid of it an option.
BUT if I take the alternate route with Mello and L: I think Mello would go through the fifty stages of grief fairly rapidly. It's a huge toss up here whether he'd get it removed or not, because honestly Mello would agonize over it himself for a long time. Because on one hand; good. Get rid of the little shit, Mello doesn't want to have feelings for Near, and the option to control that heavy burden he carries around in him in relation to Near would look like an intoxicating sort of freedom to him. On the other hand; he grew up with Near. Near is a part of who Mello is at this point, a huge part. If he loses Near then he not only loses everything he's ever fought for, he loses why he even fought for it in the first place. Would the freedom from Near be worth the risk of not being himself anymore?
As for L...well, he's very much not a creature of self-denial. He's a creature of hedonism. Oh, he'd be pissed and sulky about it for a bit, but he compartmentalizes fairly quickly—he'd move on to one of two things. One, planning to end the Kira case before the Hanahaki kills him, and getting it removed afterward, but having to deal with it until he proves that Light is Kira. Or Two, making Light fall in love with him. Through any means necessary. He wouldn't get it removed before the case closed, however, because he'd see losing his memories of Light to be too much of a gamble in the end—in love or not, L is here to win. Again, by force if needed 💗

HOLD UP I'm reversing my stance because actually actually actually L having Hanahaki would be uniquely interesting especially in the context of falling in love with someone who already wants him dead 👀 L has limited options if he wants to win live.
1. Again, get it removed. He wouldn't do so until he'd proved Light as Kira, because (if we're going the removing flowers removes memories route) he'd see it as too big of a gamble. He'd wait and pray that he solved the case before the flowers killed him.
There's also the option of L locking Light up somewhere until he recovers from the removal enough to review all of in-love-L's notes and footage on him, but this runs the very high risk of L just falling right back in love with him all over again. No bueno.
2. Make Light fall in love with him. THIS is a unique option simply because L would need to do so in a manner that never displays weakness—no soft conversations for him, no earnest heart-felt wooing. L could confess to Light, but that brings on a whole string of other problems. Light would be delighted by the turn of events, would likely (again assuming that we're going the 'Hanahaki has an emotional/psychological component in how it progresses' route) immediately start acting as if he were also in love with L so as to 'save' him, while also knowing that L would know he was pretending and thus it would not work. There's also the chance that Light would use Misa as an excuse to outright reject him without seeming cold, therefore hastening the disease's progression so that L dies faster. So, those avenues closed to L, he'd have to get creative.
(I do not believe L would ever die quietly in this scenario. It's not happening. He wants to live and he wants to win.)
Forcing Light to fall in love with him through underhanded tactics is going to be his best bet. L would pull out every mental trick in the book to get Light to start seeing him as less of a threat and more of an Option™—Pavlov's dogs would shudder in fear at the shit L would pull. And if L takes this route, he also has to figure out what the fuck he's gonna do with Light after he's cured himself, because again, if it's a psychological component he can't just lock Light up somewhere or he risks the flowers coming right back. It'd be an interesting time for everyone involved :D
The complications of Light realizing what L's doing or even why he's doing it would also be fun. Light wouldn't go quietly into that loving good night if he figured out that L was basically baiting him into falling in love with him, especially not if he realized that L was doing it to save his own skin. He'd find some way to manipulate it in his favor—maybe even by trying to sway L to his side? Would L be tempted to join Kira if the option was there, when his life was on the line and hemmed in from multiple angles? Or even just pretend to join Kira and sabotage him on the side, cuddling up next to him while sending off messages to Anti-Kira groups. Something to think about 💕
Oh, and the flowers L could be afflicted with are endless. Red roses, blue roses, spider lilies, fire lilies, cowslips, aspens, asphodels, begonias, black-eyed susans, coltsfoot, diphylleia, hollyhock, lavender, hydrangeas—I could go ON.

Very interested in your "L gets Hanahaki" AU. Especially option 2 because that's the one that seems most like what L would take. Plus, it would likely end in Lawlight (albeit under threat of recurring terminal disease. Wait, does that mean Hanahaki is non explicit version of Fuck Or Die 🤔? Since failure to make the other person fall in love would eventually lead to death).
What sort of things do you think L would do, to make Light fall for him subtly? Does he refer to magazines for romantic advice? Or look stuff up on internet? Ask Wammy or Aiber (who is implied to be happily married even if he's involved in a morally dubious career path)?
I get Hanahaki is serious business TM, but L doing serious research and experimenting what methods work and what don't like a science experiment except it's about romance... It makes me laugh. It's creepy adorable? Sort of.
The possibility of "what to do if Light does love me back, I can't keep Kira... Or can I?" is also fun~
Would L make a 'Kira enclosure'? But if Kira is sad inside said enclosure... Light hurt and sad --> L hurt and sad. It's like hitting his own foot lmao.
Hanahaki is definitely non-explicit Fuck or Die. Love or Die. Except in this case it's Love and Die :3 Fun, isn't it?
And that's the fun bit, honestly—L trying various ways of wooing Light with varying degrees of success. L wouldn't ask Aiber for advice, though, because he's trying to get Light to fall in love with him, not trying to seduce him into bed. Or, well, not just that anyway.
Unironically I think Light would enjoy being wooed like a nineteenth century woman; flowers, poems and letters declaring undying loyalty and intent, expensive gifts and foods, the whole shebang. So I think L's best bet would be to take this and,,,,pervert it, a little bit.
But—first things first—L has to make Light register him as a romantic option, rather than simply an enemy to overcome. Luckily for L, he's already halfway there! He (rightly) assumes that, since no one else has ever had any luck gaining Light's genuine attraction with looks, pretty words, or outright affection, that Light wouldn't fall in love with just anyone, or he'd have a true partner by now. L, with his superior intelligence and moral standing, is likely the only person that could ever actually interest Light long enough for him to develop romantic feelings—and, despite how arrogant that is, he's right! :D So the first and biggest step here is for Light to stop seeing L as a looming threat. L would probably drop some comments here and there about not having Kira executed once he catches them, about how brilliant Kira is, about how it's a real shame that Kira is evil and wants to kill him because a mind like that could be very helpful to him. Drop a bomb in front of the Task Force and admit that he doesn't actually oppose Kira as much as he enjoys the chase and wants solve the puzzle regardless of the true outcome. A gamble, but one that would pay off in terms of Light's murderousness.
While L does that, he also begins to work on the 'wooing' aspect of his plan, by giving Light gifts 💖 BUT the caveat is that Light only receives these gifts directly after being nice or affectionate towards L. L even gives them out when Light is being real/sarcastic with him, to encourage him to not only want to be affectionate with L, but also to open up to him and show him his true (♡Kira♡) self. And then L also, at the same time he begins giving Light gifts, starts leaving romantically inclined things within Light's line of sight. A little heart eraser on their desk, a love song playing in the background while L works, several romance novels joining the book stack near their bed—all while L makes himself a larger figure in Light's life, forcing all of those associations to turn to him. Again, Pavlov would be jealous of the shit L is pulling.
(Watari is not exactly...happy about this turn of events, but he doesn't protest either. He wants L to live as well, he just wishes that it was a nice young lady instead of, you know, Kira.)
The funniest thing about this though, is that it would work. Light would be idly getting ready for the day, pulling on his fancy new clothes that L recently bought for him and liking how nice they look on him, and be mentally planning out a way to do something nice for L so he'll be in a good mood to have Watari order dinner from that nice restaurant again, and also so Light can watch L lick the chopsticks clean because he likes to watch L eat normal food—and then his brain would do the loudest fucking record scratch you've ever heard in your life because when exactly did he start planning his schemes around L's continued existence instead of his death?? When did he start feeling excited to see him, or fond of him??? Diaster!
Meanwhile L hasn't thrown up whole flowers for days and he's feeling pretty good about himself >:3
As for the Kira Enclosure....well, you're right. Locking Light up in any sort of way is no longer an option. But L would see continuing allowing him to be Kira as a loss as well. So maybe L finds a way to pin everything on Higuchi or Misa, and calls for Light to come with him since the case is 'solved'. Maybe L would have both Death Notes by the end, or maybe he wouldn't, but he'd wrap Light up in enough manipulative red tape in front of the Task Force that Light wouldn't be able to refuse him and stay in Japan, so either way Light doesn't exactly have access to a Death Note anymore.
Oh he still might have a page or two that he can use hidden away, but L keeps a very close eye on him 💕 "Light-kun's beauty distracts me" is not much of an excuse when it's true, even if that's not the only reason. And if Light finds an occasion to use one of those pages on, say, one of the more elusive criminals that they're hunting? Well, L didn't see shit, if you're asking. No idea what you're talking about, Watari, that man obviously had prior health problems. His lab results were clearly faked you should probably crack down on that morgue's security—
...Ironically, L with Hanahaki is the one most likely to have a happy ending :3

SUMMARY: If this had been any other case, he would have been ecstatic. L finally had someone to be himself around. He found someone who he could connect with through matched intellect. His eyes finally lit up at the sight of something other than a vaguely interesting murder case. The only issue with this was that the object of his affections was a mass murderer.
@deathnotetober day 14! (the blog officially moved so i can finally just tag one blog! rejoice!) i'm a part of the minority that believes that if lawlight happened in canon, watari would probably be against it for obvious reasons. that's what this fic is.

Ace/aro books coming out this year that I’m looking forward to!
Is Love the Answer by Uta Isaki - stand-alone manga about a college girl who discovers she is aroace. The same mangaka also did ‘Mine-kun is Asexual’ a couple of years ago which I liked, though it was much shorter, so I’m happy to see a full length release from them. This came out just last week, so I’m super excited to read it when it gets here!
I want to be a wall (Vol.2) by Honami Shirono - manga series - releasing 17th Jan. I already posted about how much I enjoyed Vol 1 of this series, but for recap it’s about an aroace woman and her lavender marriage to a gay man who is unrequitedly in love with his best friend. I’m really excited to see how their non-conventional relationship plays out :) it’s very slice of life and cozy!
I am Ace by Cody Daigle-Orians aka Ace Dad Advice - releasing 21 Feb 2023. I’m glad to see a book about a sexuality actually written for an ace audience, because I feel like a lot of aspec books/articles are aimed at raising awareness with allos. I’m excited to see how this one goes!
Sounds Fake But Okay: An Asexual and Aromantic Perspective on Love, Relationships, Sex, and Pretty Much Anything Else - by Kayla Kaszyca and Sarah Costello - releasing 21 Feb 2023. I’ve listened to their podcast a bit over the years and I’m curious to see what they come up with in this book!
If you want to see a fuller list of all the ace and aro books coming out this year, check out this list HERE!

In my life so far two (2) people told me that they would date me under different circumstances and fuck it hurt so much and I cried both times after hearing that
The first one was my gay classmate like five years back who told me that he would date me if I was a boy (ironically I am now a transmasc so it's just funny now) and I didn't knew I was aroace yet, still I cried so hard because I wanted to feel like this about someone too
The second time was either last year or the year before that and it was my friend who told me that but she knew that I am aroace, I cried that night because I wanted to experience love so badly
I heard the comments that we (aros/aces) have it easy but it's not that easy when there's romantic love all around you and you are going crazy just because you can't fall in love

my favorite thing about tma has always been the avatars who love the fears they serve, who show that love so vibrantly that, for just a moment, they sway you into feeling like you could learn to love that fear the way they do. when jane prentiss said "not loved as you would understand it, a deeper, more primal love, a need as much as a feeling" and when jude perry said "as the heat warped my bones and bubbled my flesh, all i heard was the loving exaltation of my god" and when mike crew said "falling had always held a special place in my heart, that wonderful border between terror and delight" and when manuela dominguez said "and at his words i felt afraid, and my heart soared in terror and elation as my eyes brimmed with tears, for i knew he spoke the truth" and when hezekiah wakely said "i had never felt such safety as within the crushing weight of earth all around me, the pressing embrace of the buried." do you get me
