When did Cotton-tops Pop Up??
Easier to ask than to find on the internet! The genus Saguinus seems to first have appeared during the middle of the Miocene. It gets trickier to find out exactly when the Cotton-Top first showed its white tuff, but there have been a few predictions!
As you can see, the divergence of the species were roughly in the same ballpark.

Cotton Top Tamarins!
Doesn’t ring a bell? Imagine real life Gremlins, but cute like Gizmo!
The cotton-top Tamarin, or Saguinus oedipus if you want to get fancy, is native to the tropical forests of Columbia! The first long-term field study was done in 1987 by the conservation program Proyecto Tití. At first, the study was to observe the different reproductive strategies cotton-tops were capable of but turned into an overarching program to help conserve the species and its habitat. Interestingly enough, cotton-tops have been legally protected in Columbia since 1969 and export was banned in 1974, but the numbers were still diminishing :(. Now this cuties are considered critically endangered. Become aware! Acknowledgement of the issue is the first step so we don’t lose anymore critters!!
