First I will just say: you all did not make this easy, and I mean that in the best possible way. It was an absolute delight to see all the submissions come in, and even more so to get to listen to all of you sing. I’m really sorry that I couldn’t include everyone (once all the speaking roles were cast, there weren’t enough people left over for an ensemble), but I really hope that everyone who auditioned has a wonderful rest of their week.

Just a heads up- I’m not to be abruptly closing the form at midnight EST or anything, I know people are in different timezones + people are apt to be up into the night anyway. If you’re still wanting to submit something, I’d just say do it sometime in the next twelve hours.

Announcing: Social Distancing Spring Awakening!

Theater kids, are you feeling at a loose end right now? Did your school play get cancelled? Did the show you wanted to see get postponed til Autumn? Is your playlist of contextless breakdown songs the only thing separating you from going to live miles away from others as a hermit in the woods? Me too! So I thought we could all do with a little online musical theater in these trying times.

My plan is to do a live streamed, audio-only read through of the 2006 rock musical Spring Awakening on May 1st (date may be subject to change), with a youth cast of 16-22 year olds. Auditions are open from now (March 31st) to Friday, April 10th, and I will post the cast list on Monday, April 13th. This post will be reblogged momentarily with a link to the audition form, since Tumblr mobile has a tendency to block posts with links from showing up in tags.

I’m making this first post on my main blog, but from now on I will be using my side blog @socialdistancingspringawakening for any posts about this project.

I'd really like to participate in this, but I'm not sure I'm going to be able to do voice calls every day. Would that be required for the rehearsals?

Oh certainly not. Some characters will be required for more rehearsals than others, but I no one should be required every day.

okay i am slightly over the age limit (turned 23 two weeks ago) but i’m a music director and obviously all the projects i was gonna try and help out with during my gap year are no more so like. if you need anyone to do some super lowkey casual zoom/google hangouts music rehearsals or just like. someone 2 answer any musical queries. i would be totally up to do stuff like that

(also lol pretend i didn’t totally miss the part where this is being done over discord haha, that’s chill, CEO of reading comprehension)

Hey I know this is supposed to be a school thing but plenty of people who aren't 16 are in school with cancelled plays. I'm trying not to be hurt but I know some people who love the show and are between ages 13-16.

I did consider that, and I’m really sorry that not everyone who wants to will be able to participate, but given the sexual content of the show, I wouldn’t feel comfortable working on it with anyone under 16. This is not me saying that people in their early teens can’t appreciate Spring Awakening or shouldn’t be allowed to enjoy it, I just think it would be personally irresponsible of me to allow people under 16 to work on this with people significantly older than them. 

Again, I’m really sorry, and honestly if you’re young, know the show, and feel like you’re mature enough to be in it, then you probably are, but I’d much rather be safe than end up putting someone in a situation that does them harm.

Can I ask where we could get an instrumental track to use in the audition? I could back myself up on the piano, but I sound different when I play as well as sing and I assume you want to hear what we sound like without the distraction of playing 😊
