Answering 'WIIFM'? - Giving the Audience a Compelling Reason to Listen

One of the biggest mistakes people make when preparing a presentation is in navel gazing; they spend a lot of time thinking about their own objectives, i.e. 'what's in it for me?' instead of thinking about the audience, and 'what's in it for them?'

The benefits to the audience of whatever it is you're presenting about may be self-apparent and obvious to you, but very often they aren't to them. You may very well eat, sleep and breathe your subject. But your audience probably doesn't.

Just stop and consider what might be going on in your audience's brains as you get on your feet to present. There could be 1001 different things distracting them. They could be thinking about the big game on TV that evening, the argument they had with their partner before going to work, a new relationship, the annoying noise their car engine keeps making, the fact their child isn't doing well in school or their pet is sick, financial worries or even what they're going to cook for dinner that evening.

And that's just personal stuff. That's before we throw in all the things that are happening at work. And with everybody's new-found ability to multi-task and the fact that attention spans are getting shorter, there is always the temptation to open some of the 500 emails in their inbox while you're speaking (while looking like they're being attentive and taking notes)

And because YOU think your presentation is important, you expect them to put every one of those things to one side, forget about them and give you their full attention instead. Let's be objective for a moment. What are the chances of that happening without you giving them a very good reason for doing so? Pretty slim, I'd say fun things to do at home.

If you use a powerful opener and grab 'em by the throat you'll have them listening for the first couple of minutes (see my article 'How to grab 'em by the throat'). But now you need to tell them exactly why they should give you their undivided attention for the next 15, 30 or 60 minutes of their lives.

In other words, you need to tell them your presentation's CAB - the Compelling Audience Benefit.

So ask yourselves: what's in it for them? What will they take away from it? Why is it relevant to them? Why will they find it interesting? Before each presentation, try and come up with half a dozen benefits, and rank them in order of importance.

And please don't make the mistake of thinking that 'general' benefits will motivate people to change or take action. 'It will save the company money' is a 'mom and apple pie' statement, something nobody could seemingly oppose. But what if your proposal saves the company money, but costs me (or my department) money? Or impacts adversely on my little 'empire'? Reduces my headcount? Lessens my power and influence? Creates extra work for my department without a corresponding increase in resources? Nine times out of ten I'll come up with reasons why it won't work. I won't state any of the reasons I've just mentioned of course; I'll come up with some that sound objective and reasonable instead.

It's much more powerful if the CAB is a benefit to me, rather than the company. 'It will save you $5000' outweighs 'it will save the company $50,000' a hundredfold.

If your presentation is to a customer, think about them. Most people begin a formal sales presentation with a stock 'About Us' slide that is used in every presentation they ever make, giving some information about their own company. This slide will contain such fascinating information as how long they've been established, how many branches and employees they have and what their growth has been like over the past few years. Usually the words 'Financially Secure' and 'Strong Technical Skills' will feature in a bullet point somewhere. They may even have an absolutely riveting structure chart full of names the audience have never heard of and don't care about (if the audience is especially unlucky, it might even have photographs!).

I have news for you. This may be enthralling to you, but it's generally of only minor interest to customers. They are far more interested in themselves, their own problems and what you can do to help them. So why waste the beginning (when your audience's attention is at its greatest) with information that is of secondary importance to them?

Instead, the first thing you talk about after your opening during a sales presentation should be your customer. Start by saying something like, "When we met two weeks ago, you said that the main problems you faced were X, Y and Z. We're going to tell you today exactly how we can help you solve those problems. How you can speed up customer delivery times by 25% and reduce costs by $750,000 per year."

Now some sales experts say that one of the main things in a prospective customer's mind is, "Can I trust these guys?" and that she will not be open to persuasion until this question has been answered. Because of this, they argue that the first part of a presentation should be about creating trust, hence the ubiquitous 'About Us' first slide.

The customer should be given the boring, drab, factual information about your company either before the presentation or as part of the handout. Another way to create this trust is to include the names and logos of your existing customers on your opening slide (assuming you think they will impress the customer - remember that harping on about enormous existing customers to a small company might have the opposite effect of what you intend, and make them think, "These guys aren't for us"). You don't even have to mention them - just let the customer see them.

She should be able to choose the size of the guest list. After all, every woman who is invited to the shower must be invited to the wedding too. Single Moms Follow Your Dreams

I conducted two workshops at the PTA Leadership Summit in Dallas. After my first session, an attendee came up and talked to me. She said she had a dream, she just didn't know what it was successful single moms.

She was entering a new phase in her life, in her early thirties, and just settling in after a divorce, and she wanted to know how to discover her dream... her passion. She didn't know where to start.

So many of us find ourselves in that same situation. We don't know where to start. Instead of asking questions, like my attendee, you quickly become overwhelmed and decide to give up. It's so easy to do. With being pulled in so many directions, you don't have the time, energy, or patience to take it slowly or one step at a time. You want it yesterday. But dreams don't happen like that. They take time to discover and years to develop.

That same night, I was taking a little "me" time and watching America's Got Talent. I love watching people's dreams come true. It was emotional for me... the suspense built as the judges used their words wisely keeping you guessing if the contestants were advancing. I watched as they broke the news to the contestants. An older comedian, a 39-year-old female singer who says it's her "last chance," and an opera singer who just wanted to be accepted by others, all received good news. As each of them heard, "You're going to New York City and Radio City Music Hall," tears came to my eyes.

Maybe their dreams didn't happen in the time or the way they planned, but life never does. Their dreams are coming true. WOO HOO! THEIR DREAMS ARE COMING TRUE!

The older comedian said, "Just because I'm 53 doesn't mean I've given up on my dream." No matter how old you are, you still want to turn your dream into reality. So don't wait any longer. You're not too old. You're not too overweight. You're not too busy. You're not too ____________ (fill in the blank).

As a single mom, maybe you put your dreams on hold. Maybe you forgot you even have dreams, but you do. You get so busy taking care of things, but what about taking care of you, looking out for you, and going after your dream.

You are perfect just the way you are to start pursuing your dream. Maybe you don't know the answers. Maybe you don't know what questions to ask. So often when this happens, we throw in the towel and give up. We tell ourselves we aren't worth it, it wouldn't happen anyways, or it's just too late. All of those things we tell ourselves are just not true. We want our dreams to happen. We can see them, taste them, and feel them. But we just don't know the first step to take.

Just start. Start somewhere. Start anywhere. Start by asking some questions or doing research. Be patience and learn to take it slowly. You have all the time you need, but just start. You will eventually make your way to the answers. Don't give up. You never know, maybe right around the corner your dreams will become your reality.

Becoming a Mom has definitely accelerated my desire to put to rest some outdated belief systems that I have about myself and to genuinely feel good in my skin. I think it's a time when the things that truly matter begin to become clear in a way that they never have before.

There are countless suggestions on ways to improve self esteem in adults. There is a universal desire to be happy and at peace with ourselves, others and life. Self esteem is not something that has come easily to me. I have had many hard lessons to learn, mostly in the area of relationships. Because life is a mirror, I can see that a lack of peace in my relationships reflected a poor relationship with myself encouraging words for single mothers.

It can be difficult to improve self esteem, especially in adults because many times we will search for affirmation of our worth outside ourselves. For example: we seek love, acceptance, success, appreciation, recognition etc. from others and from our accomplishments. The problem is that self esteem from external sources is fleeting. When the external source flees (because everything is always in a state of change) we are left wondering why feel depleted and try again to improve self esteem.

Why Does it Seem So Difficult to Improve Self Esteem?

A lack of or poor self esteem is a symptom of a greater issue of being in a state of disconnection. Disconnected from our self, others, God and the rhythm of life. A disconnected sense of self. Notice the words "sense of self".

True self esteem, the kind that sticks around and helps us out, comes when we affirm our self at every level. I have also read that self esteem is simply the feeling of being worthy of happiness. Gee, I like that!

Self esteem also comes from trusting in the power that created you.

All issues that adults face with related to poor self esteem stem from core beliefs that are widely known in self help, psychology and spiritual circles:

True Self esteem comes from KNOWING that you are: WORTHY and ENOUGH.

The problem is that most people get stuck when they try to improve their self esteem because they do not begin by asking themselves two very simple questions:

Am I good enough as I am? Am I enough, without all my accomplishments or perceived lack of accomplishments? Am I enough or do I feel shame about who I am? Do I need to "fix myself" or am I enough as I am? Is there anything to "fix" or can I transition into a state of knowing that I am enough?

Am I worthy of giving and receiving LOVE? This is a huge question that many people will not answer directly or they will assume that the answer is yes, when in fact the way they approach their life does not prove that they believe they are worthy of love. When you feel worthy of love a you no longer inhibit yourself from giving and receiving the love you deserve. Each human needs to be loved and to give love. It is a basic human requirement that when it is not met can create much unhappiness.

If you have poor self esteem, it is not self esteem that is the issue, it is how you answer these two questions above.

Many times during my journey, I have gotten in to the trap of over examining my life's experiences. Hashing out all the good, bad and ugly in order to understand and then move forward. I've finally realized the problem with this: True self esteem cannot be attained "in spite of" your life experience, personality, status etc.

My Surprise Bachelorette Party!

This was a night I won't soon forget. My last single night out with my closest girl friends.

From that point on I knew we were in for a great time!
