Glitchy-slide

A long exposure photo of me sliding down a slippery-slide. It incorporates the two elements of glitch and slide. The glitch could be looked at from a photography perspective in that it isn’t a perfect exposure, it isn’t properly in focus and a bit over exposed. Then we have the slide element, which i took literally by using a slippery-slide.

A sudden break in function or continuity, sometimes of a transient nature, with a varying degree of seriousness. A sudden, usually temporary malfunction or fault of equipment.

Slippery-slides are a fun thing for kids to use at the park, but why are they always just for kids? Why can’t adults have fun parks with adult sized slippery-slides? Luckily i found a slippery-slide in my suburb but with it being so small and short i didn’t get the full effect that i had originally intended. The more i was thinking about the physical slippery-slide and how when kids go down sometimes they bounce from side to side, or just come to a complete stop mid way, is this a glitch of the person and they can’t use it properly? Or is it a glitch of the slippery-slide and it wasn’t built correctly?

I started thinking more about how when you go sliding down it is reminiscent of emotions we feel and our ups and downs, how sometimes when we start to feel sad and down it can be a slippery slide down to further sadness and depression if you let it. On the outside you look like you are having fun while you are sliding down into depression. It also reminded me of this semester of uni where it has actually gone rather fast, the world quickly rushes past you in this crazy life and everything becomes a blur then all of a sudden it comes to a stop, do you get back on and have another go or this slide down to nothingness or do you walk away to something better?

Research

Researching into the meaning and origin of the word glitch i came across a site that said according to Eric Raymond, author of The New Hacker’s Dictionary , glitch is from the German ‘glitschen,’ meaning ‘to slip,’ via Yiddish 'glitshen,’ meaning 'to slide or skid.’

After my first poster where i focused more on the literal and obvious expressions of glitch, using a digitally glitched bug, for assessment 2 I decided to focus more on the origins of the word glitch being to slip, slide, skid. I started with just turning my static poster into an animated gif but thought it couldn’t really go anywhere from there. Next I decided to find some songs that had to do with slide, I found 2 sets of song lyrics that are titled ‘Slide’, one by Calvin Harris and the other by The Goo Goo Dolls. I highlighted each time the word ‘slide’ appeared and then placed the layers on top of each other to kind of further glitch it. Again wasn’t too sure on where else to take this. Next I decided to make a gif collage of people and animals sliding. The slippery dip ones have me thinking more about is it the person that is glitching when they fall or bounce around or is it the slide that is glitching? And this is where my final work really started to come to fruition. Next I decided to film myself going down the slippery-side but then reversed the footage to make it look like i was sliding up, this was to illustrate a glitch in the slide. Finally I finished with a long exposure shot going down the slide to show the world rushing past you.

We went on a class excursion to the Powerhouse Museum last week and as an activity had to be uncreative and appropriate one of the works we saw. We chose this video being played and Arlia copied what the women was doing. I actually really like the pic with just the silhouette as it wasnt planned, the video had just dissapeared between scenes and Arlia was still doing the action then i captured this image.

oh man, so many things going through my head on what to try and do for assessment 2. So it still has to be something to do with my topic question about ‘glitch’, but after reading my assessment 1 feedback i should be looking more into the slip/slide/skid aspect.. there are many ‘obvious’ options i keep thinking of, then there are some more abstract, i will have to start experimenting i guess :p

To glitch or not to glitch, that is the question. is it? i don’t know, perhaps? So as previously posted i started off with the initial idea to digitally glitch a photograph, as it was the first and obvious thing for me to do. I would assume that most people would go to this first, but perhaps wont actually do it for fear of being too predictable or obvious: “I have to think outside of the box”, “I must experiment more” is what we are told to believe. I'm happy with choosing the first thing that pops in to your head, it arrived there for a reason.

So I glitched a photo i took of a soccer player ‘sliding’. More searchings I cam across some synonyms for glitch with one of the first ones being ‘bug’, in the digital sense.

My final poster is a simplistic design of a combination of everything i tried and discovered to do with glitching. It is an 8-bit image of a ‘digital bug’ with my glitched soccer sliding photo behind it. The bug is very similar to space invaders, which i guess these digital technical glitches are kind of ‘invading’ your computers or cameras and invading your everyday life, whether it be a digital glitch in a game or program, or a physical human glitch of behavior, emotion or a case of deja vu, a glitch in the matrix.

So i stayed with my first idea of glitching a digital photo, but this time using a photo I took of my husbands soccer team where one of the players is ‘sliding’. So taking a literal meaning of the origin of the word and then glitching that. Is this where I finish? Is this my poster? Only time will tell...

Gizmo glitching So I have had quite a few ideas for what to do for my glitch related poster. The first thing that popped in to my head was glitch art, taking information out of a digital photo and then reopening it to distort it, but then i thought is that too obvious? Yes it is. However why is that a bad thing? Eventually by everyone ignoring the first obvious choice it will become original and new again. Anyway, I have also been researching the origin of the word ‘glitch’ and its meanings, giving me more ideas, some similar with minor differences, some in a totally different direction.

I find it hard to ‘experiment’ as I come from a designer background, so i am always thinking of the exact end product first and then I decide to make it.

ECOLOGY 

The ecology on campus we chose was the library. Using ‘glitch’ and ‘rebellion’ we reversed the books in the library to hide the spine of the book. By doing this we got rid of the identify of the book, erasing the title, author and what it was about. We changed the system of the library to something that was useful to something that is useless. This changes the relationship between the books and the students looking for them.
