tactile design outcome sticker/totebag concept designs with a few assets
Tumblr media
using one of my favourite slogans/ catch phrases im thinking it could be on totebags on its own and for stickers it can be both on its own and in their designated bubbles. as for the other people they’re just on their own. for the hugging i could provide options for which colour hugs which. for the individual speech bubbles, im thinking of just making a few with gen z slang with relevant context like the one i used on bottom right. i do think i could include more illustrated assets for this so i can finalise the best ones for the final design outcome.

poster design testing
Tumblr media
trying out different strong slogans for the awareness with different fonts like all rights reserved, cotton - regular, anton - regular, continuo, aurora - regular, and metallophile Sp8. these are good strong bold fonts that work well with this campaign. i still do think these are conversational and easy for gen z to be comfortable with. by taking the reverse thinking pov, it helps to make this campaign about spreading the stories of poc and making it a celebratory thing to celebrate POC and diversity. it helps put a light on this.

experiences of south auckland people are important and relevant in this campaign as it helps knowing what a person goes through because of the colour of their skin.

these threads are important because they give direct simple answers something to help you understand the point of the campaign because you, as a poc get to put definitions and words to those experiences you’ve had in your life.

these types of threads are ones on instagram that i enjoy reading because the first slide has a specific topic or question that i’d want to know and it would break things down in each slide. as a campaign i would want people to comment their experiences which is part of my call to action where the more you learn about others experiences, you get closer to the bigger picture and the problem overall, especially as an ignorant racist.

for this thread i included taika waititi’s quote because it is important. this also gave me an idea for this campaign if it were real real i would post quotes from other activists in aotearoa weekly or every two weeks and tag them, which would help gen z get more info on this social issue. i like the idea of having informational threads like this where it is straightforward and in words that aren’t complicated, especially easy for gen z to understand

for the design outcome, digital, i am taking a social media route, so this is what i have as a consistent design system and colour scheme. in response to my formative assessment, this is what i wanted to do and im glad that its working well towards it. ive decided to post any infographics, poster series, animations made to this platform where relevant.

Racism is alive and well in Aotearoa – from verbal assaults, slurs, put downs, “profiling” and threats of violence - but there is little data on how widespread it is. This prompted Stuff to launch its own online survey as part of its Being Kiwi series on diversity and racism. Cate Broughton reports on its findings.
very important quote

This could be used as part of a poster series for printed and digital design outcomes aswell because it is important and relevant to to showing visually especially online as an animation and a thread posted on the social media platform

faces of a racist animation concept
Tumblr media
inspiration for this is Butcher Billy Changes Bowie.
here i wanted to show how it doesnt matter how you look whether it be how you dress, express or say it, you could be saying something racist.  things like backhanded compliments such as “youre so pretty for a [race]” is saying that the race itself doesnt have attractive people but you are an exception. this is putting down a race and making you “one of the good ones”. which is a common thing to be said to POC by racists with the mindset that the race is like animals or rogue. terms like thugs are often thrown around by ‘karens’ to attempt to keep POC to this image. Privilege and ego takes a big part in how threatened some racists are by POC, such as immigrants. Making assumptions about POC about their education through sayings like “oh wow your english is so good!” in a suprising tone is insulting and demeaning. and asking whether a poc can afford something, is always considering they are poor and beneath you is part of the problem.
so this concept is important to show how casual racism is through how mannerisms and things people say! this is also known as microagressions.

breaking it down for myself in simple sense and questioning
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media

poster series rough planning idea
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this idea of a poster series where ‘stages of realising you’re a racist’ which has similar concept to stages of grief where there is denial to acceptance etc.. which can also reflect onto the reverse thinking, this being the stages of learning about racism which i found an ABC news article on!
poster series idea p2 would be just questions that people who have said something racist/ are racist have said in ignorance and denial
these two links are so important and helpful for this part

design outcomes
Tumblr media
for this campaign for a gen z target audience, keeping things modern and colourful would work to keep them interested and attentive. i think that having poster series works for printed, with them also uploaded on digital platforms like intagram where there will be infographics available. for environmental, its a bit tricky considering where it would be placed, but bus stops and public places like that would work the most because gen z is prone to be in these areas so a bus ad would be ideal. tacile is a very important one because as a gen z myself i like to purchase cute little merchandise like badges and stickers along with tote bags, anything that can be reused and changed around on my mood. so making those would be relevant.

an important and very relevant narrative to consider is the casual racism that took place in the recent covid 19 location of interests. how people are quick to blame south auckland and call them the problem but the north shore party was just a bunch of silly kids who made mistakes.... its problematic but a clear sign that nz always had their underlying racism through this microagression that the media can take advantage of.
to put yourself in the shoes of a victim of racism may be a way to truly understand what it is like to be POC in nz, especially pasfika. where same patterns happen in different times but same thinkings.

reverse thinking the problem
Tumblr media
a way to interpret the social issue that my awareness campaign is about is to take into consideration of reverse thinking it. putting it in a positive light and bringing a brighter response. this could be done by celebrating diversity through compassion and empathy. i think this could be done through Accountability, making it more than just admitting your ignorance and mistakes. this can be through taking your time to understand POC experiences and care for their struggles rather than just be a bystander to their pain.
