Redshift, Blueshift
”That’s one of Paz’s greatest strengths. Once he has his mind on something, there is no force strong enough to prevent him from achieving it." Finally, Ikora turns to Lodi, lips curled into a smile as she takes a step away from the railing. “You’re lucky,” she says. “It seems that his current goal is keeping you safe.” Lodi’s brows raise in surprise, and he can’t stop himself from recoiling a bit. He scratches the back of his neck with a modest chuckle. “C’mon, Ms. Rey, you’re making me blush.” Ikora stops before she fully takes her leave. “Paz’s words, Lodi,” she clarifies over her shoulder, “not mine.” In which the Weapon and the Ambassador's paths cross for the first time.

Briefing’s always been one of the less fun parts of the job.
Paz isn’t the type to let things go in one ear and out the other – or at least, he tries not to be. Honest. He just tends to pick up on the details of the situation much better when the thing he’s supposed to be shooting is already in front of him. Half the time, the details don’t even matter all that much; he’d get the job done one way or another.
Regardless, he knows when to reign it in. Mostly. His first Vanguard briefing in almost a year certainly feels like one of those times.
The Titan leans back as far as the pilot’s seat will allow, feet kicked up haphazardly on the control panel. His fingers drum idly upon his chest, switching up the rhythm every few incongruent measures to keep time with Ikora’s words coming in through the comms. Something’s been spotted on Kepler, she says. A singularity. Whatever it is, it’s enough to pique the interest of the Hidden, and that’s more than enough of a call to adventure for him.
“Drifter’s already taken up low orbit. We’ll press forward on your mark,” she finishes explaining just as Paz decides to actively tune her in again.
“Copy. Sounds easy enough,” Paz replies. The 4-over-3 tapping between his fingers switches up to a steady triplet, and a confident smile twists at his lips. “Feels pretty good to be back.”
“And we’re just as fortunate to have you again,” Ikora replies, pragmatic as ever. There’s a pause on her end for a moment before she cautiously adds, “...You’re sure you’re ready to dive back in?”
Sixteenth rest. Paz chuffs at the question. “Y’know who you’re askin’ that to, right?”
“I still want to know.”
Triplets falter to a sloppy swing beat for a moment. He catches himself, 5-over-4.
“C’mon, when have I ever been wrong about this kind of thing? Have a little faith in your frontliner, Chief.”
He can hear Ikora chuckle on the other end before silence overtakes them again. A final flourish taps out a sixteenth-triplet, snappy and sudden before being dampened by a flat palm. Paz lets his hands fold themselves over his stomach as he opens his eyes, staring at the lights and color flashing by at warp speed. He’s spoken to her enough times to know what Ikora’s really asking here.
“...Besides,” he says quietly, as if speaking too loud would confess this to the wrong ears, “I ain’t gonna let that hold me down forever. World’s gonna keep turnin’ either way.”
Ikora remains quiet for a moment to consider his words. There are a million things she could say to protest this line of thinking, but Paz wouldn’t take ‘no’ for an answer when he first asked to accompany her to Kepler. Not to mention he was invited here, just as she was. Who would she be to withhold that from him? At the end of the day, he decides the tempo at which to take his life. The most she can do for him now is to keep it steady.
“I suppose you have a point.” She concedes. Then, with a more relaxed tone: “My only hope is that you haven’t lost your touch.”
Paz barks out a laugh. “Oh, it’s been way too long since you’ve last seen me in action if that’s what you’re worried about. You’ll be happy to know Nimbus taught me a thing or two while I was away.”
He can hear the smile in Ikora’s voice. “I look forward to it.”
