the idea makes perfect sense. at least, more sense than living it up in prison to keep from moving home. “ you said you would fix this. so, fix this–––– ” caroline does not want to say the wrong thing and scare misha. he could so easily say no, but it would be so much better to have a familiar face by her side instead of some stranger. she playfully nudges his forearm and finally spits it out, “ come with me! pretend to be this imaginary boyfriend i made up. it’s a free vacation and when you get back, you can have my room. ”
the two of them have maintained a healthy balance of ' friends ' and mortal enemies , never once crossing a line into something more . it shocks him when the idea flutters through his mind that her hand felt good in his own . so much so that his palm itched to reach for it again . he physically has to shake of the thought and pocket his hands into his jeans to keep himself from doing just that , grateful for her familiar response . " that's one way to keep from moving back home — i'm sure prisons have a theater department too . " an easy quip , watching her features lift whilst his slowly drop . " i thought helping you pack was me doing you a favor ... now you want something else ? — so needy . " sarcasm drips off his words effortlessly , a teasing smile stuck pulling at his lips . " what is it ? "

lizeth’s answer gives him reassurance that she wants this as much as he does. they’ve been in each other’s lives for a very long time, arlo couldn’t imagine what his life would look like if she didn’t. unfortunately, the hope quickly disappears when she continues. “ if you think this is unfixable, why did you bring us here? ” he leans back, a wall going up as she lets hers down. the only answer he can think of is to end it.
“ i do. ” doesn’t miss a beat in replying, leaning in closer to him as she allows herself to be vulnerable. lizeth struggles with that as she hates the way it makes her feel. it’s why she doesn’t have many close friends. not even a handful. “ but what if this is unfixable? we’ve been together for a long time and yet… ” she should be looking for a silver lining which is that they have been together for so long. idea of starting over with someone new is just so inconvenient and uncomfortable.

if this was happening with literally anyone else, ramona would be laughing right about now. it’s pretty stupid. but, carson is on the opposing side of this quarrel and he’s just too much of a jackass for her to be finding amusement in this. once they’re in their alleyway, and not spinning in circles, she get down from the impromptu piggyback ride. “ am i––––? ha, ” ramona cuts herself off with a scoff. of course he can’t handle retaliation. she pauses to flatten down her dress and adjust the coat that was now hanging off her shoulder. this wouldn’t be a fair fight if she didn’t look her best. “ i may, possibly, be a bit crazy, ” she shrugs, like it’s no big deal, “ at least i’m not a thief. that was my boss’s order! ”
as soon as he feels her on her back, carson is trying to get ramona off of it. they probably look ridiculous right now since they’re doing this in broad daylight–– but it seems like the people of atlanta are used to this type of nonsense so the crowds continue to walk around them. “ get off! ” then the drink is knocked out his hand and he feels like his entire world has come crushing down. “ are you fu––– ” spins around in hopes of slinging her off of him but it only makes him dizzy which has him stumbling back into an alleyway. “ what’s wrong with you–– are you crazy?! ”

hearing misha call her a quitter ignites a quiet fire within her. she could simply give up on this fight, or maybe there’s still time to figure something out and prove him wrong. caroline will just have to think quickly on her feet–––– she’s an actress, she can improvise. however, her racing thoughts come to a screeching halt when she meets his eyes. it’s as if her mind has suddenly gone blank and all she can focus on is the electricity running up her arm. not realizing the reason for the warmth she’s feeling until her hand falls to her side again, empty and going cold. luckily, misha chimes in and caroline is able to replace the weird sensation with rage. “ oh, you won’t be needing my room cause before i leave i’ll be murdering you, ” sarcasm followed by dry laugh and then, a lightbulb goes off. “ unless… ” caroline eyes go wide, the smile on her face giving it away, “ in exchange for my room… you do me a favor. ”
his laughter comes at her expense , unable to stop it from bubbling up at her self loathing . " wow , " muses softly , his brows lifting with the surprise of seeing her wave the white flag already . " i never took you for a quitter . " his words form as a challenge , not sure he was a fan of this version of her . even as the typical caroline was more of a pain in the ass than anything , it was still far better than the sulking one towering over him now . taking her hand , misha rises to his feet with her encouraging tug , glancing down at her for a moment before dropping her hand . " since you wanna take the easy way out , can i have your room ? your view is way better than mine . "

he feels a sense of relief when she releases him. partly because if anyone recognized them and saw how close they were, everyone in town would know about it by noon. and partly because arlo wasn’t sure what the correct response would be to having her at his side. and while it felt oddly comfortable for being strangers, he doesn’t want to do or say the wrong thing. fearing elena would think this was his plan all along–––– a celebrity on his arm to show off. to be quite honest, arlo never kept up with her life in hollywood. he’d hear a few rumors at work every so often and from those who found a hobby in gossiping, but because of the career path he chose his social media use consisted more of cnn and less tmz. “ yeah, not much has changed around here. still isn’t a lot to do, ” arlo finally finds the apples he’s looking for and places a bag in his basket. matching elena’s movements, he leans on the display as well. attentively watching her to make sure she doesn’t try stealing the apple in her hands, like she did the grapes. “ familiarity can be comforting, though. is that why you’re home? ” he genuinely asks, clueless to the real reason.
elena knows arlo is mostly teasing when he turns away from her, but it still isn’t far from the truth: they don’t really know each other. she remembers his name and his face, but their town’s small enough those are harder to forget than to recall. beyond him being the cute guy a few grades ahead of her, she knows nothing about him. meanwhile, he’s probably seen her business all over his twitter feed for the last few years. “fuck that,” she scoffs, looping her arm through his and resting her head against his shoulder. “you started this, you don’t get to get out of it that easily.” maybe the disparity has her feeling vulnerable, or she just isn’t the type to pass up the opportunity to needle someone, but she happily gives in to the urge to pretend like she knows him intimately, pretending to study the apples alongside him. it’s what he says next that has her dropping the act, untangling herself from him and leaning against the display as she picks up a new performance; that of an unbothered free spirit, unbothered by being back in the soul sucking borders of her hometown. “eh,” she shrugs, before crossing her arms over her chest. “don’t know.” she picks up an apple, pinching the stem between two fingers and twisting it with her other hand: bored, not anxious. “it’s only been two weeks and i’m bored to death. and i miss the sun.”
