The first Hylian fell easily to her, but the other one put up more of a fight. Adrenaline returned in full force, pushing all of her musings out of her mind as Hemisi parried his sword with one scimitar and dug the other one into his chest, hearing him gasp with pain and surprise. His breathing turned to gurgling, a wretched mix of air and blood bubbling from his wound and his mouth, and she pulled out the sword, swallowing bile, heart racing.
She heard a woman cry out, and quickly looked farther ahead to see a Gerudo warrior falling, and she prepared herself for another fight.
And froze.
That was… that warrior was…
He noticed her scrutiny, recognized a flash of red hair, saw the light glint off her bloodied blades, and then his red eyes met hers.
“Link…” she whispered, completely stunned, mind blank, heart hammering against her ribs.
Link stared at her, the whites of his eyes shining brightly against dirtied skin and matted hair, against a black mask that covered half his face but couldn’t hide the shock he felt upon seeing her.
Neither had seen each other since that fateful night seven months ago.
The world seemed to disappear around them, battle forgotten, dust kicked up from an earth that had been beaten senseless, smoke from magical blasts thickening in her lungs, stealing what little breath she had left away.
And then Link’s eyebrows came together, eyes narrowing, body stiffening as he slowly rose from where he’d been kneeling on the ground from a finishing blow. His grip on an unfamiliar sword tightened, and he slowly stalked towards her. Hemisi felt her blood freeze, and she took a hesitant step away, defenses still lowered.

First | Previous | Next | Chapter 1 | Chapter 2 | Chapter 3 | Chapter 4
Pinkie: Well too bad cuz we forgive you anyways! We must like you or something.
-
Ocean: Yeah and you don't have to say sorry about the monsters anyways. It's not like you hit me.
-
Rock: ...if you say so
-
Rock: Ok, get off!
-
Rock: ...I am still worried about going to the light though. What if bad people are there?
-
Ocean: Hm...
-
Ocean: How about if there's bad people there, we sneak around them, steal their boats and sail home without them knowing we were ever there?

oooh for the beat the heat write a thon, how about something fun with Son Squad! All I have planned for them in the near future of writing is some not great times so they deserve a break
Link took his hat off to wipe the sweat off his face for the thousandth time. He forgot how awfully hot the desert was. But this desert was strange, different. He’d figured because he wasn’t familiar with the weird red masked guys that he must be in some other land, but…
He dreaded thinking about it, honestly. He wasn’t sure what land he had fallen into, but he knew something was supposed to go bad. That was always why he was sent somewhere.
He guessed things had kind of already gone bad. The teenager he had been imprisoned with was in bad shape, after all, and Wolf wouldn’t let Link give Scars a potion. Link couldn’t figure it out, but he chose to listen.
Wolf was a strange companion. Link knew he was more than just a wolf, as he seemed very smart and was willing to help and listen to him. Which clearly meant he wasn’t an animal, and he wasn’t a wolfos. So Link figured he was some sort of magical creature. But the frustrating thing was that every time Link tried to use a potion to help his other companion, a teenager covered in wounds and therefore named Scars, Wolf would stop him. He didn’t know why, but he’d given up trying. The Song of Healing hadn’t help either, though, and Link was all out of fairies.
He had to find help for Scars, or he would die. And Link didn’t want him to die. He supposed he could use the Song of Time until he figured something out, but he needed to know where he was first, or he’d be going in circles forever.
Why did Wolf have to make it hard? Link was sure he could force some potion down Scars' throat, even if he was sleeping. Whatever. Wolf was a helpful companion. And it was fund riding on his back.
Except Link couldn’t ride on his back right now. It was too hot and Wolf had to carry Scars.
What they really needed right now was directions, some kind of landmarks of settlements where he could start figuring things out. He was fairly used to being dropped into completely foreign places at this point, but this heat was really starting to bother him.
And then he saw a giant skeleton up ahead, and he wondered if it was real or not, but it was something, so he headed towards it.
As they got closer, Wolf's ears perked up, and he picked up his pace. Link tried to hurry along as well, the sun directly overhead, beating down on them. Wolf sniffed the air, moving faster, and Link got hopeful - this couldn't be something fake, then, like those images in the desert sometimes were.
It felt like it took an eternity to get there, but the sun was still high as they finally reached the giant skeleton. Link had no clue what it was, but it provided some semblance of shade, and...
Whoa, was that water?! Link dashed forward, finding a giant flower bud of some sort filled with water. He paused, a little hesitant, but he could sense magic, and more specifically fairy magic.
A fairy fountain! This was perfect! Link immediately dunked his head into the water, happily slurping it up and enjoying the coolness. When he emerged, Wolf was also lapping at it.
And then there was a rumble, and Link quickly moved towards the mushrooms that looked like a stairway. A great fairy burst out of the water, glancing around. "Oh! Who is disturbing the water? Oh! Hello, little one."
Link smiled, waving. Then he pointed to Scars. "Please, he needs healing."
"Oh, my," the great fairy noted, leaning over to examine the teenager. Then she glanced at Wolf, who sneezed and backed away a little, poking Scars with his nose. The great fairy giggled. "Oh, poor cursed ones. I'm afraid I cannot heal him completely."
Link glanced worriedly at Scars. "But--he may not live much longer."
"No, he most certainly will not," the fairy agreed. "I can bless him a little, help keep him alive and sustained for a time. But he needs stronger magic than what I can give. My powers have diminished over the years, with the darkness that overtook Hyrule."
Hyrule? They were in Hyrule? "What about Princess Zelda?"
"I know little of the princesses of these days," the fairy replied with a sigh, finger resting on Scars' forehead. "Visit my sisters. We can each impart a little of our magic, for both of your friends. But I believe the Spirit of the Forest might be able to better assist you."
Spirit of the...? Did she mean the Deku Tree? He was just a scrub, and his job was to protect the Kokiri Forest, not heal strangers. Link scrunched his nose a little. He wasn't sure about this fairy. But maybe they could visit the others and see what happened then.
Assuming Scars lived long enough.
"Rest, in the meantime," she bade with a gentle smile. "Drink and bottle the fairy water, it will sustain you longer than normal water. And my little ones will hush away your worries and pains."
Wolf wagged his tail as a bunch of fairies appeared, hovering around them with little chimes, reminding Link of Kokiri Forest. He smiled, watching them flit about, and sat on the mushrooms, dipping his hand in the water as he watched the great fairy give some magic to Scars.
Then she sank back into the water with a goodbye, leaving the three alone with the little fairies.
Link sighed. They had a long road ahead of them, he guessed. But he'd keep everyone safe.
And he really needed to figure out how this place was Hyrule and who those masked guys were.

MiphLink Week Day 1: Don't Close Your Eyes
As the Calamity began its assault on Hyrule and the Champions readied for battle, Mipha pulled Link aside, her heart heavy with words unspoken. "Link, promise me you will be alright. Until I am by your side...don't close your eyes. Wait for me."
He didn't give her an answer, but the gentle squeeze of her hand reassured her that he would try his best. She was skilled in her healing, there was no doubt about that, and as long as she could reach him in his hour of need, he would be okay. Mipha prayed that she would be quick enough from Ruta's position overlooking the battle. Surely she would protect him as she always had.

Are you doing writing prompts anytime soon? If so here's an idea. Rusl and baby Twilight, back when he first adopted him
Of all Rusl’s missions with the resistance, the hardest mission in his life had nothing to do with them.
Or, well, it was kind of their fault, but mostly his own.
Rusl had come home after a mission with something extra one morning, catching Uli off guard. But given the child’s circumstances, Rusl couldn’t just leave the little one, and despite being married two years, he and Uli hadn’t really had any luck conceiving. He knew Uli wanted a child, and this little one was in desperate need of a mother.
But Ordona, he was a handful.
Link was a quiet little boy, but his cries were still loud enough to fill the house. He was having a difficult time adjusting to his new home, his new parents. Rusl had been warned by several that adopted children were often difficult in the beginning, and now he understood what they meant. But the screaming and crying, the breaking things and regression, they were all just because the little one was scared and stressed… at least that was what Rusl was told. He hoped it wasn’t because they were doing something wrong.
Despite the issues, it was worth it for the nice moments, for the times when Uli could soothe the little one’s tears, when he would sleep in Rusl’s lap, when the tired, stressed parents would actually get a smile out of him.
It was a difficult situation to be sure, but a rewarding one.
This morning Rusl was debating whether he should work in the forge. He’d hardly done any work since bringing Link home for the first time, trying to help Uli get the little one acclimated, trying to show Link he would be there for him. But now he was wondering if it was time to try to integrate Link back into their normal lives. He’d heard from Auru about whispers of another mission, but he’d respectfully turned it down, knowing that leaving for potentially several weeks just after bringing Link here would not go well in the three-year-old’s mind.
But eventually, Rusl knew he’d have to work on making a living again. The other villagers had been very supportive, offering to make dinners, bringing them supplies, trying to help Link feel welcome. It was a little overwhelming for the entire family, honestly, but Rusl was eternally grateful for it.
Link was asleep between the couple, having had a nightmare in the middle of the night. Rusl and Uli kept getting thrown off balance by the child, who sometimes welcomed sleeping with them and other times wanted to be left alone, but it seemed after a month he was finally becoming accustomed to their care and comfort, and he was actively seeking it out.
Rusl stretched a little, trying not to wake the child, but Link was still a very light sleeper, and he jumped a little, eyes opening. The Ordonian whispered to him gently, reassuring him, and then smiled. He didn’t get a smile in return, but that was okay – Link’s smiles were rare, and often reserved for all the animals he would play with. The boy seemed most at ease in nature, which wasn’t surprising as he was half feral when Rusl had found him.
Yawning, Rusl slipped out of bed quietly so Uli could keep sleeping, and Link watched him a moment before slowly following him.
“Ready for a bath?” he whispered with a smile, holding out his hand. Link took it without hesitating, which was a major victory to his guardian, and the two went outside. Rusl wasn’t sure if the little one had never been potty trained or if the stress of whatever he had endured had set his development back, but they had been working hard on hygiene habits and Link was starting to become amenable to baths.
Starting being the operative word, of course.
Link shook his head.
Rusl sighed, staying patient. They had finally gotten beyond the boy immediately acting out, so he tried to respect the child’s wishes within reason, as he was expressing them well. “Okay. Do you want a bath before or after breakfast?”
Link watched him a moment, and then he wandered into the kitchen area. That meant after breakfast. Rusl was figuring out the child’s silent language, and—
“Link, don’t grab that,” he hastily advised as Link tried to climb the counter and snatch the nearest glass bottle he could find. “You want some milk? We’ll get some, but you can’t climb the counter.”
Link bit his lip, and Rusl automatically felt himself tense, waiting for another meltdown, but it didn’t come. Instead, the boy sniffled and wandered outside. Rusl stood there a moment, stunned that the child had actually not started wailing, and thanked the spirits for the milestone and gift.
He headed outside to take Link to see the goats, as the child loved them, and instead found a diaper and tunic on the ground.
Panic filled him, and he started looking around frantically. “Link!”
Thankfully, the little one hadn’t gotten far, but he also hadn’t gone unnoticed. Rusl’s face burned with embarrassment as he hastily took his own shirt off to scoop up the child and wrap him in it as Bo watched and chuckled. Link finally did start to wiggle and cry as he’d been close to getting near the cuccos, with whom he loved to spend time.
“Need anythin’, Rusl?” he asked between laughs.
Prayers for patience, Rusl was going to say, but he didn’t dare complain in front of Link. Instead, he politely declined. The boy squirmed, unhappy to be held hostage in his guardian’s arms, but Rusl distracted him by saying, “Let’s get dressed so we can see the goats, okay? That’s where I was gonna take you to get milk, silly.”
Link’s cries turned to sad little whimpers as he glanced up at Rusl, who simply smiled back at him. The child let himself be carried back to the house, where Rusl got him dressed in fresh clothes before Link waddled along behind the man, heading excitedly for the ranch. Link shot ahead as they neared the entrance, and Rusl didn’t bother stopping him, greeting Broden, the proprietor of the ranch. Broden had long since grown accustomed to Link’s adoration for his goats, and so he happily greeted the child and opened the gate, allowing Link to rush in.
“How are things goin’ with him?” Broden asked.
“Still a handful,” Rusl admitted, wiping some sweat from his brow. “But he is doing better. How’s Fado?”
“Kid’s a mess,” Broden huffed, rolling his eyes. “Should’ve seen him in the barn this mornin’. Ain’t got a thought between his ears sometimes, I swear. Ah, it’ll be fine. He’s got a good heart, at least.”
“In the end, that is the most important thing,” Rusl noted gently, eyes watching Link. The child did also have a good heart, he could tell, he could see it in how gentle Link was with animals, in how he’d behaved one night when he’d made Uli cry out of sheer stress. Link had been in the middle of a meltdown, and Rusl was trying to mitigate it while Uli broke down. Link’s sobs had only worsened, but he’d gone straight to Uli, which he’d never done, and he’d let her hold him, as if he knew she needed the hug as much as he did.
He knew the boy was just scared and lost and didn’t know how to regulate himself. He knew Link was trying. So he kept trying too.
“Link,” he called, approaching the child. “Do you want to pet the goats?”
Link nodded, his shy smile shining forth in the morning light, and Rusl felt his heart swell. Link reached up just as his guardian bent down to pick him up, allowing him to be tall enough to stroke the nearest goat’s back. They would stay here all morning if Link had his way, and Rusl let him run amidst the animals for what felt like at least an hour before he told the little one they had to go home. Link complied without a fuss, surprising the man, and when they returned home Uli had breakfast ready.
“Thank you, love,” Rusl said as he greeted her with a kiss. She gave him a brief hug before turning her attention to Link, gently asking him what he wanted to eat. Link pointed to different assortments of foods, still a somewhat picky eater, and Rusl and Uli chatted about the goats over breakfast.
When the boy finished his food, he gently pushed the plate away, thought better of it, and then grabbed the plate and hopped out of his highchair to go take it to the sink.
Rusl and Uli stared, stunned, before glancing at each other. Then Uli smiled brightly at the little one. “Thank you, Link, that was very kind of you to do that.”
“Yes, that was wonderful,” Rusl encouraged gently. “Thank you, Link.”
The three-year-old gave a shy smile and then pointed outside.
Rusl found himself debating the matter. He figured Link wanted to play with the animals, and he was more than happy to oblige the child, but he still needed a bath. Link had just done something wonderful, something he’d never done, and he wanted to encourage that, but he still needed to ensure the little one was clean, as hastily throwing fresher clothes on him was not adequate. But would Link view it as a punishment, since he didn’t like baths?
He'd give a little leeway. They’d play for a few moments, and then he’d remind him of their agreement. He asked Uli to draw up the bath as he took Link’s little hand and let the child lead him outside.
“Do you want to see the cuccos or the goats?” he asked.
Link hesitated a moment, looking between the path to the ranch and the cuccos clucking up ahead, and then he smiled brightly and skipped ahead towards his roaming feathered friends.
After a brief time watching the little one giggle at the cuccos, Rusl finally directed him to the bath. Link only would bathe if Rusl was with him, so the Ordonian entered the cool water, enjoying the relief from the summer humidity and heat, and held Link close so the little one felt safe.
“There, see? This isn’t so bad,” he noted with a smile and a wink.
Link watched him a moment and then leaned in, wrapping his little arms around Rusl’s neck, and the world grew quiet as Rusl basked in the little one’s hold. Spirits, it was such a relief to see so much improvement in the child’s behavior and trust.
Rusl prayed that someday Link would know how much he was loved, that he would feel safe enough with them to maybe even speak and not feel out of control.
The rest of the day passed peacefully, with no tantrums from Link, a brief little fishing trip, and time spent watching deer in the woods. At the end of the day, after dinner, Rusl and Uli had bade Link good night, telling him they loved him, but Link started to cry, not wanting to be left alone tonight. Uli gently carried him, humming a lullaby, settling him as she brought him to their room, and the family laid together under the covers.
Uli kissed Link’s head, and then Rusl did so as well, the boy safe and warm between them. And then Link looked between them, eyes still glassy, and moved his lips a little, barely letting out a mumble.
“Thank you.”
Uli and Rusl stared, neither entirely convinced they’d heard right, and Link sniffled. His mother moved quickly to soothe any tears that might return, and she showered him with love and kisses while Rusl continued to watch, feeling his own eyes sting.
“You’re welcome, Link,” he whispered. “We love you very much, son.”
Link’s voice was gone as suddenly as it came, but he reached out to his pa, who tucked him under his chin, encircling him in his arms.
He knew, in his bones, that despite the struggles of helping Link adjust, everything would be all right in the end. And he thanked the spirits for such a blessing.
