The bluntness with which Zach spoke with made her feel guilty if that wasn’t how she already felt before. She didn’t respond to the letter for the reason that she didn’t send her already written and prepared one, because she didn’t know if she was ready to open up like that to him. Her mouth opened once to say something, anything, but she shut it again. Even though he was acting like it didn’t really matter that she ignored his letter, it did. She knew it did. If she didn’t say anything now then she would just have to watch him suffering in quiet torment for the next three weeks. Be brave, she told herself before replying to him.Â
“I’m sorry… I wanted to write to you. I even wrote out a letter for you, but,” She licked her lips before speaking again, as her mouth grew dry with the anticipation of what saying these next words meant. “My father went missing during the War. I know you probably know that, lots of people do with him being an Auror, but yeah… I don’t like talking about it, I don’t like it being real; it’s so real now though. They found his wand over Christmas Break. I know it’s not an excuse, but that’s why I didn’t send you a letter. Partly because I didn’t want to be honest about it and also I wanted to just tell you everything and you’re going through enough!” Her voice was raising as she got through her speech. He probably wasn’t expecting her to say anything like that. She pushed on through despite the fact that she was finding it harder to speak. “I-I want to be here for you if you still think I’m dependable enough.”Â
Zacharias’ interest grew the second she said she did write a letter to him and he felt better of himself- he thought it was stupid at first, for sending her a letter after they’ve went out just once. But, then- when she didn’t reply to it; he felt even more stupid and it had never happened to him before. It was all new to him, maybe to Orla too but what was the best thing of all was that he still felt a little odd about it. When she started opening up to him though, his features softened and he forgot any kind of angry thoughts he had about her or about the letter- he felt horrible because her dad was missing and his dad had been one of the Death Eaters that maybe contribuied to such a thing.
“ I’m really sorry about your father,” he finally spoke- and your endless war with this. He did want to add that, but he chose not to. He took a step closer as she finished talking and he felt terrible.” You could have told me, I wouldn’t have reacted badly.” he continued as he brought her close to him by wrapping his arms around her, a sigh exhaling right besides her ear. “ You can tell me anything, no matter if I’m having my trials soon or not.”

sallysmith-slytherin:
Zach’s remark made Sally laugh, reaction that took her by surprise. “This is a sign I should slow it down with all these books and the hours spent in the library and have so fun until I still can.” The blonde smile at him now, but as soon as she let her eyes drift away, her smile fade and her mind was once again filled with thoughts and concerns. She listened to his words but they came hazy and because she also felt confused these days, the girl mostly caught “together we’re stronger”, which, in all honesty now, it was the most important part of whatever his little speech was about. In that moment, Sally, out of nowhere, simply threw herself in her arms, tangling hers around his firm and toned body frame, keeping him tight  in her arms. She didn’t care about anything at this point - her eyes were closed, she was sheltered herself at his chest and her arms around him made feel nothing could hurt her anymore.
She remained still, she didn’t cry, but the grip of her hands tightened while catching his robe in her fists. It wasn’t that she was scared- at this point, with  her lately investment in her trial, with Astoria’s help, with those photos…things finally seemed somehow hopeful for her, but at this point she was incredibly confused, somehow damaged, psychological damaged - it started before the Christmas and this whole mess was now taking it toll on her. She needed to let this out and Zacharias had always been the one to see this part of her, this damaged Sally - she trusted him like no one else. All her insecurities laid down there, between them.
A soft grin appeared on her lips when Zach told Sally he loves her - of course, she knew it, but hearing it it doubled its power. “We both escape, then!” The blonde now finally pulled away a little bit, looking him in his eyes and rapidly she placed a sweet peak on his cheek, backing off now for good. “Look, don’t get mad, I am just worried and at some point we would have discussed it anyway : how is you trial going? Do you have a lawyer? Do you have witnesses? I might have something for you…”Â
Zacharias narrowed his eyebrows as his cousin started to laugh, making him sigh a little at first before realising that it was better to laugh than to cry  in times like this.” That’s honestly something we both should do. Now.” he then teased, trying to loose himself up a little; no matter if he suceeded or not, he had tried and he hopes she does the same- after all even if the war outside is done, it doesn’t mean that the war inside their minds, their houses would ever be over. One thing he has always been sure- no matter what happens, he will protect Sally and have her by his side. although, he had a complicated personality- so when she grabbed his robes into her fists, he sighed again- more gentle this time and took her closer by the waist towards him. He knew she’d never cry- he wouldn’t either; but, this was the closest they’d ever to get to crying and it was enough for the two of them. it was enough, it had always been.
“ You might have something for me? I’ve found one witness or maybe two, yes...but, other than that- unfortunately, I’m on the loose.” he let his lips up into a smile as she pecked his cheek, feeling for the first time like it was alright and that no matter what happens, they’ve got each other’s backs. “ So, tell me Sal-” he broke the silence again.”What do you have in your mind?”

Of course he had to attempt to undermine her point completely – there were already parallels to be drawn back to Dumbledore’s Army. “Then that house elf is very lucky,” she told him calmly, pressing a friendly smile to her lips. She would not let her irritation show through - it would not get her anywhere, after all. “Unfortunately, not all house elves are treated like that. And while abuse and mistreatment of house elves is absolutely our first priority, S.P.E.W. stands up for other basic rights as well, such as an existing wage, to start with.”
“ And you know that he isn’t the only one- just because some of the purebloods do treat them badly, it doesn’t mean all of them do.” Zach wasn’t even bitter towards the other- it was her bad if she was still feeling odd about him leaving the Army, it’s not like he was the one who betrayed them back then. He chose his own path just like she chose hers. “ Alright and what could I do to help you with this organisation, Granger?”

Flora watched with a smirk as Madam Pince gasped and huffed at his remark. Pince smoothed her skirt and walked away indignantly, glaring daggers at both Zacharias and Flora.
“Oh, I’m always careful, Zacharias.” Flora laced her fingers together under her chin. She loved a thinly veiled threat, although she wasn’t always a fan of being on the receiving end. “And how careful have you been for trials? Feeling lucky? Good witnesses? I do hope you have some.” Her voice was sickeningly sweet and wholly inauthentic.
Zacharias’ smile thrown towards the liberian was both irritated and bored- a combination he hadn’t felt for quiet a while. Turning his head back towards the other, he shrugged his shoulders at Flora. “ I wouldn’t say you’re always careful- if you were, we’d have never talked about the trials in the first place.”     With a huff, he took a hold of the book. “ You know that we’re not allowed to talk about it, so why bother? Want me to be the first one thrown in Azkaban and you’d follow me suit?”

This particular section of the library wasn’t often inhabited by many students since it lacked a proper window lighting to make it a viable place to read nor did the stale air that was caused by all the dust made it any better—but Stephen liked it. It was small, q u i e t, and no worries about taking up too much space at a table. It was pleasant if not drably.Â
However, the mentioning of cookies caused the reviewing Ravenclaw to look up from his book; like a meerkat lurching up out of curiosity. “As long as they aren’t lemon flavored I’ll give a crack at them if you don’t mind,” Stephen replied, still unsure if he should. The rumors about the other were vast and with little to no contact with him pre-war, he was trying to be cautious or judgemental like the others. Â
“ They’re chocolate chips.” the dark-haired boy responded as his eyes were still focused on the book in front of him- he did not reconizge the voice and he wasn’t even reading, but Zachairas felt like he  needed to show the other some space or whatever it was called; with a narrow of his eyebrows and a flui change of his corporal position, he faced the Ravenclaw with a shrug.
It wasn’t like he didn’t see the others in halls before or even in class- Zach had no idea, honestly. He hadn’t paid much attention in the past and now was an awful time to just get going. Although he knew he had quiet a reputation and the Auror still following him around was one big proof.” Do not worry, I did not poison them- my Auror is still alive.” he mumbled the last part though.

Flora hadn’t realized it was Zacharias that had taken a seat next to her. She glared at him for having attitude with her. When he gestured toward the book she’d not been reading, Flora felt very put off. She shoved it toward him, still open, and it slid across the table and fell to the floor with a loud thud.
Madam Pince rounded the corner of a bookshelf and pointed at Zacharias threateningly, since he was standing over the book. “Be careful with my books, boy!” Her harsh tone was somehow still at a whisper, in true librarian fashion.
“Yes, Zacharias, that was very irresponsible of you.” Flora mused, eyeing him. She wondered if he’d be mad.
“ Don’t worry, Madam- if it were really me I would have burnt them years ago.” he threw the librarian a signature smile before picking it up  from the floor, eyebrows narrowed towards the other. He, however didn’t make a move- even if Merlin knew he wanted to.
Positioning the book in front of him, he started to turn the pages with another shrug following. “ What about you, Flora? “ he asked matter-of-factly before looking up at her with the same signature smile he threw at the librarian earlier. “ When will you be careful?”

Hermione skipped half a beat as she saw who she was talking to. She had originally invited him to join Dumbledore’s Army as well, though ending up rather irritated over his constant complaints and arrogance. Whether or not she truly wanted him to join S.P.E.W., she was not sure. It was, however, another name to the list - which was something she dearly needed - and it was still a possibility that he would not stir the same troubles as he had in DA.Â
She cleared her voice, brushing off the annoyance at his familiar grumpy tone. “S.P.E.W. stands for Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare, which is exactly what this organisation is about, naturally; we stand up or house elves rights, and aim to better their living and working conditions. They are treated horribly, you know.”Â
“ Well, not all of them.” he finally answered with a shrug of his shoulders- this was the first real talk he had with the other ever since Dumbledore’s Army; he might have complained a lot in that time, but he didn’t regret getting out of it when he could. Not even when he’s on trials for not helping many during the battle of Hogwarts. “ My house has of course an elf and she’s treated by my mother way better than she ever treated me.” he stated matter-o-factly without thinking twice.
” But, do continue with your point.”

Her mouth sort of gaped open as she finally saw it was Zach standing before her. She recognized it was him by his voice, it was soft and warming to her, but she felt so guilty at seeing him. “Zach…” She had barely spoken to him since they had gotten back to school and hadn’t sent a single letter over the break itself. She just didn’t know if she was ready to open up to him about what was happening with her, but she wanted to know he was doing okay with the Trials. She wanted to help him if she could. “It’s okay, they’re nothing.” She said, clutching the letter to her chest, an action that contradicted her words. “How have you been doing? I’m sorry, stupid question, it’s all I could think of.” She took a tentative step towards him.Â
To say he was dissappointed it would be too much, but he wasn’t really happy of it either- the fact that he had sent her a letter and she didn’t even respond. Maybe he was too proud of himself to actually understand how much she liked him- he might have just overrated himself. Even with that, he was a little grudgy and maybe too defensive.“ I mean, if oyu would have responded to my letter you might have knew much- but, I’m fine. Thanks for asking.” he shrugged his shoulders.”  I’m in my last three weeks of freedom as I like to call it. And you?”

sallysmith-slytherin:
Sally’s mind was wandering around different places, running wild towards universes where her questions and troubles would find some answers. She was aware of the fact that Zacharias was right by her side, but at the same time, reality seemed more like an illusion - it had lost its meaning.  The nightmares weren’t a problem anymore, because her thoughts were keeping her awake every single night. She didn’t even know how she wasn’t dead yet with all this lack of sleep. Maybe it would have been better than having her soul sucked in by a Dementor in a few months.
“Sometimes, I wish I was evil as well so I wouldn’t be here, drowning in all these qualms of conscience or whatever they are.” whispered back Sally, not looking at him, as if she was talking to someone invisible. “ But you still have a life, Zacharias. And you took care of it, by doing what was right for you at that time - never regret your actions because at a certain time, they were exactly what you wanted and fitted you.  You can deal with the aftermath, but never regret your decisions - you can’t change them, anyways. And believe me, we will deal with this aftermath. Somehow… we will. YOU will!”
Sally felt his stare, but she didn’t return it. Instead, when he wrapped an arm around her waist, Sally let her head on his shoulder, embracing his fit figure with both her arms and pulling him even closer. Zacharias was her family and her support. When he was by her side, she felt sheltered.  What she feared now, was the moment she will have no shelter anymore. The moment she will be in a cell and Zacharias somewhere far away from her, the moment the family would have to split.
“I know, my dear Zacharias, I know. But it’s gonna be over soon. You shouldn’t even be involved in these freaking trials and this is why you will be free. Just hold on a little bit more. It’s only a matter of a few days.” At this point Sally wanted to make a funny remark, but the moment was too tensed for it and so she saved it for later. “You know that I will always love you, right?”
“ You sound like one of those profund writers.” he  arched a brow, a mixture of amusement and challenge. “You need to get it in your head that this won’t be your home for long- and Azkaban won’t be either. Trust me, you will thank me later. Because that small family of yours, may seem weak, but together we’re stronger… you know what are the chances of survival for that, don’t you?” The boy asked smoothly, however, he did not expect an answer in return. It was as if he questioned the obvious.  He didn’t know what he was saying either.    Zacharias was originally a very free-spirited young man, who was best friends with his fellow hufflepuffs As a Hufflepuff himself, he held a sense of duty when he enrolled in the Dumbeldore’s Army however their father saw him as very irresponsible and reckless, proving he was very much a free spirit who did things on a whim, taking no mind to what people thought. Every time  Sally is put in a situation that endangers her  life, he of course protects her. Ever since the trials, hebecame slightly kinder, if only for the fact that he no longer mindlessly kills and torments humans without good reason, and he controls himself to be strong for her sake. He proves that he is capable of care, and selflessness, masking the most intense of his emotions to spare himself from seeming weak, but expressing just enough to draw in the only person that matters. Her.
“ I don’t want to hear it-” he said becuase he honestly didn’t want to, hear her say apologizes and cry over somehting that may not even happen. “ but, I love you too Sals. It’s gonna be alright.” he assured her as he wrapped his strong arms around her, taking in everything. “ Either we both escape or we both go down, do you hear me? It’s no in between.”

Zacharias had never been or looked the studious type, war didn’t change that- he was just bored and decided to do something worth doing. He also had loads of homework.
Scrunching his nose due to the fact that he could not concentrate on reading but stubborn as he was he did not stood up, there was a bag of cookies right by his side which was half eaten by his Auror - he didn’t even touch it. The Auror wasn’t standing too close to him as he asked him not to, but he was sure he heard and saw everything. With a sigh, he finally looked up from the book- having to blink in order for his eyes not to hurt. “ Does anybody want a cookie? ” looking at the Auror, he shrugged. He would have commented that the Auror was too fat, but he was too tired to make such remarks.

orlaquirkes:
Mornings had always been a great time of Orla’s day. Well, mornings were usually the most she saw of the day. When she wasn’t in class she would be napping and so this meant she was awake most of the night and up very early in the morning. Now though mornings were a very stressful time for Orla. She had been receiving a letter every day since the break from either her grandmother or mother or sometimes even from her grandfather. She didn’t know if this could be the letter where she got told something revolutionary in her Dad’s case or it could be a general update.Â
Her grandparents had been staying with her mother since the break where Orla expressed how worried she was about leaving her mother alone when she came back to Hogwarts. It seemed to be going better with them there. They actually got her Mum out of the house one day! After Orla skimmed the letter and made sure there was nothing there that could upset her, she began leaving the Great Hall whilst reading her letter. She was one of those people that annoyingly walked and read at the same time. The letter was a particularly pleasant one, reading the nice ones made her feel so much closer to her family at a time where they really should all be together. She seemed to be so engrossed in it that she didn’t see anyone walking right in the opposite direction to her until she had knocked right into them. “I am so so so sorry! I am such a clumsy person and yet I insist upon doing reading and walking at the same time to be super efficient.” She said all this, not paying much attention to the person in front of her as she needed to collect the sheets of her letter before they even had a chance to see them.Â
Zacharias totally couldn’t bring himself to remember when he started to care so much about someone else than Sally, sure there were times back into his fifth year when he had friends and was actually trying to do the good thing. But, then he remember that saving your own skin is way better and safer than saving other’s skin- a thing that he has forgotten during the war several times. He ended up with a buddy after all.
“ It’s alright.” his voice was somehow soft as she watched her pick up her things, he didn’t want to interview- he saw the way she was protective with that letter so he just stood right where she bumped into him and looked down at her. He wouldn’t lie if he said he expected more than half a glance from her, but that was alright too if that’s what she wants. “ I would have helped you pick those pieces up, but I have a big nose and I wouldn’t want to cross any lines.” he spoke as he took a step back almost hesitantly.
