LEONIE WAS BORN IN THE NETHERLANDS ... with DUTCH being her native tongue. she grew up in rotterdam until the age of 5, moved to alaska ( where her mother is from ). and was raised in anchorage, of all places. the move was not exciting in any way, though she had to endure the change and learn the english language in the process. it wasn’t either, but she settled in a lot quicker than she could’ve ever imagined — well, not her but her parents. her father, a dutch man, was considered to be the daredevil of the family. the red-haired girl was taught to ride a bike and drive a car by the man with dark, long hair. a dad’s girl from the start, he was the one who took the role of being a dad seriously, & made a huge effort of having léonie know how to do the basics; such as learning how to change a tire, fix the plumbing in the house, or anything a typical person should know; not that her mom didn’t take on the role, though she would advise her constantly to be good in the world, and was a hard-working mother. to be honest, she was proud of her parents.

IN HER EARLY 20’s, SHE WAS PART OF STREET RACING GROUP. she was one of the best drivers ( thanks to her dad ) and would often win prizes in the form of cash. she didn’t keep her studies going as she was a college dropout, realizing that school wasn’t something she wanted to do. while taking part in somewhat illegal activity, years prior to turning 20, léonie met richard, whom she felt was the love of her life, but it was proven wrong in the years after. the couple went on to adopt/foster a kid by the name of kurt. despite being a teen, she considered him to be her own, and cyrek came along thereafter. though a troubled kid, the woman did everything she could to make it clear that he was a part of the family. whether he liked it or not. ava, too. thankfully, she wasn’t the only girl in the house now. adoption or foster kids, she made an effort to be their mom — one that they didn’t have before? obviously, there were obstacles along the way, but she pushed through. a stubborn woman, indeed !

before that, léonie would keep her job as a professional racecar driver a secret. besides richard knowing the fact. her profession was kept on the down low ... as well as her job on the side as a sleeper agent. thereafter, she’d notice that she’d turned out to be the daredevil of her family now, taking her father’s footsteps. what a coincidence. well, maybe not.

A WORKAHOLIC IN HER OWN TERMS, léonie had started to think she wasn’t a good mother. she worked long hours, was secretive about her job, & never had the chance to be vulnerable with the kids in the house... — up until kurt’s suicide took a toll on the family. receiving that phone call was the worst thing that would happen to her, the news made her fall into a workload, distracting her mind from the sudden loss of someone that she considered her own. how did she not notice the signs? did she do something wrong? léonie lived with guilt now. she’d result in keeping her feelings dug deep, away from any acknowledgment whatsoever ... she distanced herself from her family and changed within a few months after the death of a loved one.

what the youngsters, the kids, didn’t know was the hell that richard had put her through. every time he’d bad-mouth cyrek, she would come to his defense 99.9 % of the time. she’d come to spend heaps amount of money, her hard-earned money, to provide them with the best while the man was too busy complaining. that was beside the point. it didn’t matter anymore since she was the one who filed for divorce papers and had them delivered to his workplace. léonie fell out of love and was no longer in love with the man she married. good riddance, be gone.

A CLOSETED LESBIAN WHILE BEING MARRIED TO A “MAN”; it sounded too much like a cover of a gossip magazine, out of a headline on the news. realizing that she was 100% into women and had kept it a secret for many years, and no matter how much she condoned cheating, she ventured out to discover more of her sexuality. no one knew, but she fell in love and remarried a few years ago.

» BACKSTORY.

TRIGGER WARNING(S): MURDER, DEATH, SUICIDAL THOUGHTS

HAE MI-REU was born in the city of SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA, on a cold winter night in december. his parents, seung-ho and min-ji, were a young couple living in korea at the time. a few years had gone by and they welcomed another little boy in their home through adoption: hae ji-hun. mireu could not contain his excitement to learn that he was going to be an older brother. sure, he was a few years older than the tot, but that didn’t matter to him. he finally had someone else to play with... and instantly became friends/brothers!

when mireu was more or less 10 years old, THE HAE FAMILY moved to PORTLAND, MAINE. the thought of leaving korea never crossed his mind, however, mom and dad motivated him to learn english since it’ll benefit him in the long run. maine eventually becomes home for mireu and his family. his role of being a BIG BROTHER was not to be taken lightly as he always looked out for his younger brother, especially since they moved from korea as young boys. throughout the years, mireu excelled in school. yet at times, it was challenging for him. however, miraculously, he still worked his butt off to pass with flying colors.

despite living in the states, they often traveled to korea to spend time with her family; those were the times he cherished the most. mi-reu and his brother had a normal and happy upbringing. his mom and meant the world to him, but little did he know, they’d be taken from him. on the day of his brother’s 15th birthday and the day he was set to start his first year/semester of university at USM, mi-reu felt “off” ... despite having a send-off party the night before. maybe it was him being nervous, he thought. nothing could have prepared him for the news he received on that particular day, at night.

his cell rang twice when he answered the very important call from the police. once they asked if it was mi-reu hae they were speaking with, he felt anxious. when the 18 year old confirmed it, he wished he hadn’t. HIS PARENTS HAD BEEN MURDERED. after the police officers broke the news to him, he instantly asked about his brother - he was told that he was nowhere to be found and only two corpses were taken to the county morgue. he felt weak at his knees and collapsed on the floor of his dorm.

HE WAS ALONE, and only had his closest friends console him. he did everything he could to look for his younger brother. it was the only thing mi-reu could centralize his full-undivided attention to and refused to go back to his classes, eventually dropping out of college. DESPERATE, SOLITARY, AND CONFUSED. solely focused on looking for his brother, he’d forgotten it was time to bury his parents. he made the lonesome decision to buy a one-way ticket to seoul, and have their funerals held in south korea — mainly for his grandparents, on both sides, to bid farewell to their children — pray for the bliss of the dead.

mi-reu never believed nor followed a higher being, but he started praying to god for his brother’s safety while staying at his halmeoni’s house. he lost himself and nearly became childlike to the point where his family members became worrisome. he was quiet now, cried himself to sleep most nights, and locked himself away in a room. he was beyond thankful for his family even if he went days without expressing a word to them.

losing track of time, without realizing two years had gone by, mi-reu moved back to the maine to make a second attempt to look for his brother... after the first time was nothing but futile. he’d forgotten that he used to be hounded by the press when the news broke nationwide about his parent’s murder. yet he never said a word to them, wanting to keep his life as private as possible. they made it utterly impossible for mi-reu to be at peace. it was as if his life turned into a movie.

WEEKS TURNED INTO MONTHS. there wasn’t a sign/result(s) of his brother being anywhere. the thought of ji-hun being dead was not something we wanted to come to terms with accepting. OVER HIS DEAD BODY, he thought. simultaneously, mireu desperately decided to visit a psychiatrist’s office. diagnosed with depression and anxiety, he was prescribed anti-depressants. there was no way his life was going to be positive in the near future, though he believed it to be very slim.

desperately wanting to leave maine, mi-reu did something so random and bought a map of the us and played a game. IT WOULDN’T HURT TO ENTERTAIN HIMSELF, RIGHT? there was no need to feel guilty. he played music as he taped the map to the wall of his motel room and with darts, threw them onto the colorful piece of paper. 2 of a couple of darts landed in the pacific and atlantic oceans; they weren’t an option. to say it took him a while to notice one of them landed in the state of alaska was the least he expected. he accepted. as a result, mi-reu packed his bags and journeyed across the country to the west side.

HE SETTLED COMFORTABLY IN ANCHORAGE. having only been in alaska for six months, juggling two jobs, and living in delilah’s den gated community, mireu found solace. how? his inheritance. he had no intention of touching the money his parents worked so hard to accumulate. guilt ate him alive, but he was still standing. this isn’t how he expected his life to turn out. every day, he yearned to have his brother by his side. if only that were the case, then he’d have a reason to live/move forward and not have to deal with the suicidal thoughts trying to take over him.

» BACKSTORY.

TRIGGER WARNINGS: MENTIONS OF CHILD NEGLECT AND ABUSE, INFERTILITY.

eliana was born and raised in washington, d.c., to henry and talia okin. although, she wasn’t their firstborn, her older brother, of two years, came first. parents are supposedly meant to be defined as unconditionally loving; that was not the case for the okins.

to begin with, their upbringing wasn’t pretty. it was always filled with distaste just because of their existence. from time to time, it had made them wish they were never brought into the world. they probably thought it was a grand idea to become parents; they were never meant to become parents and shouldn’t have been in the first place and didn’t deserve such titles.

in reality, she was raised by her older brother; despite him only being TWO years older than her. they were mostly left to their own devices when their parents were nowhere to be found. to keep it simple, they were up to no good doing g-d knows what. so whenever they’d magically appear for whatever reason and act all high & mighty, it was truly a living nightmare for both.

life consisted of being berated, emotionally, and physically abused—they were impossible to please. often times, whenever they’d leave for school, bruises were visible and couldn’t be ignored. concerned adults knew about henry & talia, as they were always the talk of the town. they were quite possibly the most hated citizens in their neighborhood.

unfortunately, cps didn’t get involved as much as it should have; almost failed by the system to have a sense of betrayal and unjust feelings. they felt helpless and, as a result, lost a great amount of hope. why was the world so against them? just when they started to lose hope, one of her friend’s mom stepped in to rescue them from their tumultuous life at home. each of their friends was concerned, so their parents were, too. although they didn’t expect much from the close families, they had to help the kids and did so whenever they could. w/o the govt getting involved, of course.

months went by without having to worry about mom and dad randomly making an appearance. it was times like these that made eliana thankful for her dearest brother. if it wasn’t for him, she doesn’t know how or where she’d end up———preferably not lying in a ditch somewhere, knocking on wood. he made life worth living. they were remarkably close, attached to the hip almost. of course, they had their moments of bickering and being annoyed as hell with each other, but she wouldn’t have it any other way. he’s continuously looked after his young sister since she was an infant. they lost their childhood far too early in life, long before they knew and finally recognized it.

the quiet months slowly died down, when their parents showed up... AGAIN. this time it was much worse than before. they were desperate to leave d.c. behind yet they were still minors. her brother, 17; eliana, 16. it took A LOT of planning... but they decided to run away to the west coast: san diego, to be exact. it was time for them to leave the toxicity of their parents behind. always forward, never back; the longest journey to the freedom they’ve always dreamt of having.

right after their bus ride to california came to an end, they thought of going to a shelter for the time being; to stay for as long as they could. they were both lucky to have found jobs within a week of being there. after all, it was 1986. eliana was ecstatic to have found a job. however, being a waitress from the age of 16-17 y/o, was another kind of hell. it is what it is, she thought to herself. more often than not.

years had passed and they settled into an affordable apartment together. they both went back to school. brother decided to go for his GED while eliana chose to sit in a classroom. she had friends and was wary of who they were, cautious of the people she surrounded herself with—her inner circle of friends. yet juggling school and working two full-time jobs at the same time was a struggle, but she survived through it all in the end.

her dream was to become a vet and after some difficulty —money-wise— eliana decided to go to vet school. of course, she had to keep working. hell, she hasn’t had a day of rest since then. the most hard-working woman you’d know. if things didn’t go according to plan, she would have taken plan b into consideration: to become a social worker!

TIME SKIP AFTER A FEW YEARS OF SCHOOL, HARD WORK, GRADUATING, AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN.

after years of struggling to find love or the right one—it took a while—she fell hard, felt love, and loved for the first time. the absence of the WARMTH she yearned for was long gone. life was finally comfortable. she had a home from working her ass off—the blood, sweat & tears.

she’s been with her partner for over a decade. they have no plans to get married any time soon. while eliana would’ve loved to have children of her own, she isn’t able to conceive due to health risks and/or possible death. on a lighter note, they adopted three kids who needed a home, unconditional love, and some tlc.

despite being a vet, eliana has a non-profit organization dedicated to animals and kids. one is determined to help stray dogs & cats (similar to shelters ; euthanizing is NOT an option) find their forever home and help kids who might have suffered the same trauma she did.

she’s still dealing with the trauma from when she was a child. her brother is the ONLY person she could rely on ever since she could remember. it was 'them > the rest of the human population' and she wouldn’t have it any other way. he lives in a different state and they have get-togethers whenever the chance is given. they are still close despite the distance between them. ex: family trips, holidays, or just the unexplainable excuse to see each other.

eliana isn’t in contact with her parents whatsoever. they have tried to reach out and done everything they can to weasel their way into her life, but she NEVER gives in. she has already suffered a lot and is quite pleased where she’s at. yeah, in anchorage, but she wouldn’t have it any other way. there is no need to be on a survival instinct anymore and is relieved by that.
